The idea for Pacific Drive came to Alexander Dracott while he was driving across the Olympic Peninsula in 2019. He began developing the game with the team at Ironwood Studios, which he founded during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The game was announced in September 2022 and officially released on February 22, 2024. Players enjoyed the game’s atmosphere, characters, and the way they could customize their vehicles. However, some found the gameplay to be repetitive and difficult.

In Pacific Drive, you can earn different types of energy to power your crafting stations and unlock new crafting recipes. Here’s how to find them:
-
Stability Energy: You’ll find Stability Energy in the outer areas at the start of the game. Look for anchor points at the intersections you visit. Use this energy to open portals to garages and unlock crafting recipes.
-
Unstable Energy: To find Unstable Energy, you need to progress through the story until you reach the Middle Area. Completing missions like “The Residual Experiment”, “Exploring the Area”, and “Stable Roads” will give you access to the Middle Area. In the Middle Area, Unstable Energy will appear on your car map as a yellow circle. It works similarly to Stable Energy, but it glows red. Look for it on buildings and use it like Stable Energy.
-
Corruption Energy: Corruption Energy becomes available when you reach the Deep Zone, which appears late in the game. Completing the quests “A Small Favor,” “Illusions,” and “Red Meadows Research Facility” will allow you to access the Deep Zone. Once there, Corruption Energy will appear on your map as a glowing magenta circle. Collect Corruption Energy from intersections and use it like any other energy.
Remember, in each area you will only find one type of energy:
-
Stable Energy: External Region
-
Unstable Energy: The Middle Zone
-
Corruption Energy: The Deep Zone
So continue to advance through the storyline, unlock new areas, and discover more energy to power your manufacturing station in Pacific Avenue!

Pacific Avenue Gameplay
In Pacific Drive, you play as a survivor trying to escape the Olympic Exclusion Zone in the Pacific Northwest. Explore the area on foot or in a station wagon, and customize your vehicle in the Garage, which serves as your home base.
Your car might behave strangely, like the horn randomly going off, which you’ll need to diagnose using your headset to fix. While traveling, you can do simple repairs, like changing a tire or using a blowtorch, but more complex repairs will need to be done in a garage.

In the garage, you can use the invention station to collect resources and build machines to help you, such as machines that find new routes or refuel your car. You can also use the circular saw to collect scrap metal from damaged vehicles. Weather conditions can affect the handling of your vehicle.
As you explore, metal monsters will attack your car and you’ll need to use a circular saw to fight them off. There are also other obstacles, such as electrical anomalies and obstacles that interfere with electronic devices. As you progress, you’ll unlock new locations.
Along the way, you can find crafting recipes and blueprints to upgrade your vehicles, as well as notes, audio logs, and NPCs you can interact with. Collecting energy cores opens the door to your garage, but doing so makes the world a more dangerous place, bringing in enemies and storms that can harm you.
