Since The Matrix trilogy was released, many of its actors have become major stars or moved on to other projects. The Matrix trilogy was a 1990s and early 2000s cultural phenomenon, with Neo becoming one of the iconic movie characters that defined the 1990s. There are four Matrix movies and a short animated series, with three movies in the original trilogy and a Matrix franchise reboot in 2021. Now, The Matrix 5 has finally been confirmed, and while many of the original and reboot cast members could still return, none have been announced yet.

Yet the original movie about a sentient computer program that has taken over humanity made all its main stars into icons, with many of the characters in The Matrix trilogy still recognizable to people who have not seen it. Some of the original Matrix trilogy stars returned to film the fourth movie in the franchise, while others were neither seen nor mentioned. Of the Matrix trilogy’s original actors, some are now at the peak of their careers, while others are no longer acting.
20 Keanu Reeves (Neo)
From The Matrix (All Three Original Movies)
Keanu Reeves had already appeared in popular movies like Much Ado About Nothing and Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure when he was cast as Neo, but The Matrix made him a household name. While Reeves returned to play Neo in The Matrix: Resurrections, it is unknown whether he will reprise his role in The Matrix 5, partially due to his other major movie franchise.

After the disappointing The Matrix Resurrections, the fifth Matrix movie needs to match the groundbreaking action of the original films.

Reeves has become an action and sci-fi megastar, though he still appears in movies of other genres, like the video-game-inspired Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The success of the John Wick franchise has made Reeves one of the biggest and most in-demand stars working today, and it appears that he is also returning to some of his older movies, with Constantine 2 now in pre-production.

Before Carrie-Anne Moss played Trinity in The Matrix, she had a lead role in an unrelated TV series coincidentally called Matrix. However, The Matrix introduced her character as a 1990s and 2000s cultural icon, and her career grew from there. Moss has become a bigger action star since The Matrix, and while she played Trinity once more in The Matrix: Resurrections, she also portrays Master Indara in The Acolyte and appears in the Arnold Schwarzenegger action series FUBAR. Moss’s most recent movie, Die Alone, shows her playing a post-apocalyptic survivalist.
18 Laurence Fishburne (Morpheus)
From The Matrix (All Three Original Movies)
Laurence Fishburne was already a well-known actor in the 1990s, but playing Morpheus in The Matrix took his career to the next level. Possibly resulting in Morpheus’ badly received role in The Matrix: Revolutions, Fishburne was not approached to play Morpheus in the reboot, but this is unlikely to have affected his career, which has only flourished. Fishburne has had major roles in Hannibal and John Wick: Chapter 4, the latter of which reunited him with Keanu Reeves. He currently has eight upcoming projects, including The Witcher TV series, in which he will play the fan-favorite character Regis.

17 Hugo Weaving (Agent Smith)
From The Matrix (All Three Original Movies)
Hugo Weaving has had one of the most varied and successful acting careers since playing the powerful Agent Smith in The Matrix movies. While The Matrix kickstarted his career, Weaving became even more famous after playing the elven Lord Elrond in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Of all the bad guys in The Matrix, one of them is by far the best, and the original actor’s absence in Resurrections took some creative replacing.

Weaving has continued to star in major movies, like The Transformers, V For Vendetta, and The Hobbit. He is also set to reprise his role as Tick in Priscilla: Queen of the Desert 2, though no release date has been announced yet. Weaving could also still appear in another Matrix movie, as the Agents often change their physical forms.

Harold Perrineau was known for playing Mercutio in Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo and Juliet, who is still considered one of his best characters, before he was in The Matrix. He has appeared in many critically acclaimed productions since The Matrix. For instance, Perrineau starred as Michael Lawson in Lost, Damon Pope in Sons of Anarchy, Calvin Shaw in Criminal Minds, and Boyd Stevens in From. He is an exceptional character actor and was praised for his role as the drag queen Rhea Ranged in 2018’s Dumplin’.
14 Monica Bellucci (Persephone)
From The Matrix: Reloaded & The Matrix: Revolutions
Persephone is the wife of the Merovingian who, like the mythological Persephone, is taken to the “underworld” where she marries someone with control over death. Persephone is not seen with the Merovingian in The Matrix: Revolutions and it is possible that Agent Smith absorbed her, though this is not confirmed. As for the actress who played her, Monica Bellucci most recently appeared as Delores in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, and starred alongside Daniel Craig in Spectre, making her the oldest Bond Girl in history at age 50.

13 Helmut Bakaitis (The Architect)
From The Matrix: Reloaded & The Matrix: Revolutions
The Matrix movies were a relatively rare project for Helmut Bakaitis as he usually acted in a live theater setting. However, his performance was vital to rendering the mystery of the Matrix; his character, known only as the Architect, created the first of the Matrix’s eight cycles, intending for it to be a paradise for humans. Bakaitis has continued to pursue different acting opportunities, last appearing in the TV miniseries Stateless in 2020, and playing Walter Silverstein in the stage play, Liberty, Equality, Fraternity in 2013. He then reprised this role in an Australian online performance in 2020.
12 Randall Duk Kim (The Keymaker)

The Keymaker is one of the many programs in the Matrix trilogy, and his job is to open up the door for The One. His actor Randall Duk Kim’s voice may now sound familiar, as he veered into voice acting following The Matrix. He notably voices Master Oogway in the Kung Fu Panda movies and Wan Shi Tong in 2024’s Avatar: The Last Airbender. Duk Kim also reunited with Keanu Reeves in 2019 when he joined the cast of John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum, although he has only a small role in this movie as the Continental Doctor.
11 Neil & Adrian Rayment (The Twins)
From The Matrix: Reloaded
The Matrix‘s Twins were instantly distinctive and memorable, but they were killed early, leaving audiences wanting to know more about them. Unfortunately, it does not look as though The Twins will be returning for The Matrix 5, as the real-life twins do not appear to still be acting.

From The Matrix: Reloaded & The Matrix: Revolutions
The Merovingian is one of the most powerful programs in The Matrix, and Lambert Wilson played him as an understated but menacing character as he tries to displace the Oracle. The original actress Tanveer K. Atwal voices Sati in The Matrix Online video game, but as she has only appeared in an episode of The Office since her role in Revolutions, it appears that she is no longer acting.

While The Matrix‘s villainous Cypher is one of Joe Pantoliano’s best-known roles, he has played over 150 characters, winning a Primetime Emmy Award for playing Ralphie Cifaretto in the critically acclaimed TV show The Sopranos. Pantoliano is still acting today, and while he still tends to portray antagonists, he has even played himself in Chucky. Yet Cypher is still one of Pantoliano’s favorite roles, and he even stands behind Cypher’s betrayal in the original Matrix movie. He also took a break from playing antagonists to play Captain Conrad Howard, a protagonist in the Bad Boys movie franchise.

Belinda McClory has continued to play small roles, with her most recent being a news reporter in the widely-covered drama, Foe. Yet her minor character in The Matrix has a bigger behind-the-scenes story: The Matrix was meant to be interpreted as a trans experience, which is especially true of Switch, whom the Wachowski sisters had originally written as “a man in the real world and then a woman in the Matrix” (via BBC). Switch noticeably wears white while all the other Matrix characters wear black, and unfortunately, viewers don’t get to know the character as much as they could.
6 Anthony Brandon Wong (Ghost)
From The Matrix: Reloaded & The Matrix: Revolutions
While Anthony Brandon Wong didn’t get the role of Tank in The Matrix, his successful audition for Ghost led to his role in the franchise being expanded. Ghost became a lead character in The Matrix video game, for which Wong reprised his role. Wong also played a main character in the TV series The Twelve, and returned to the big movie franchise world in 2024, with a big part in a major movie. Wong plays the role of a TV show anchor in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

5 Bruce Spence (The Trainman)
From The Matrix: Revolutions
While The Matrix: Revolutions was not as well-received as the other movies in the trilogy, one standout character is the Trainman. Buce Spence excels at playing eccentric characters, with his best-known film role being Mad Max‘s gyrocopter pilot. Spence has appeared in over 100 productions, and his last role was the CBIO president in the 2024 British adventure miniseries, Nautilus. While the Trainman has complete control of Mobil Avenue in Revolutions, it appears that he had been absorbed by Smith by the time of The Matrix: Resurrections. However, this is never seen, and Spence could still reprise his role.
4 Clayton Watson (The Kid)

The Kid might not be a Matrix fan-favorite character, but he has one of the strongest minds in the trilogy. The Kid’s incredible backstory is explained in The Animatrix, for which the same actor, Clayton Watson, voiced the character. Furthermore, the character’s unpopularity did not put Watson off acting. He is still acting today and has appeared in small roles in Australian productions. He is also producing, writing, and directing his own movies, like Starting Blocks, about Australia’s most famous foot race.
3 Collin Chou (Seraph)
From The Matrix: Reloaded & The Matrix: Revolutions
Seraph is the personification of a computer lock, protecting the Oracle. While the role of Seraph was originally offered to Michelle Yeoh, she declined due to a scheduling conflict. Collin Chou has acted regularly since The Matrix but has not yet appeared in another major franchise. Chou often appears in martial arts movies, and while his most recently released movie is 2024’s crime thriller The Lost Man, he has two more action and drama movies currently in production.

From The Matrix & The Matrix: Reloaded
After playing the enigmatic but friendly guardian known as the Oracle in The Matrix and The Matrix: Reloaded, Gloria Foster sadly passed away. The role was recast as Mary Alice in The Matrix: Revolutions, with the in-universe explanation being that the Oracle changed her form after her original iteration was destroyed by the Merovingian. Foster was an accomplished actress before The Matrix, often appearing in small roles on TV shows like American Playhouse and Law and Order.
