Minor and Major Primary Career:
- While playing for the Mississauga Renegades of the Greater Toronto Hockey League (GTHL), Hughes sought special admission to the Canadian Hockey League. After being rejected, he played his final year with the Toronto Marlboros, scoring 159 points.
- Hughes was selected eighth overall by the Mississauga Steelheads of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), fulfilling his commitment to the United States National Team Development Program (USNTDP).
- In the 2017-18 USNTDP season, Hughes performed well, scoring 116 points and winning the Dave Taylor Junior Player of the Year Award.
New Jersey Devils career:
- Selected first overall by the New Jersey Devils in the 2019 NHL Draft.
- On July 12, 2019, he signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Devils.
- On October 17, 2019, he scored his first NHL point, becoming the third-youngest player in franchise history.
- Two days later, he scored his first NHL goal in a 1-0 win over the Vancouver Canucks.
