San Diego County Fair History
The show’s origins date back to 1880, when it began as an agricultural show. Over the years, the fair changed locations several times before settling permanently at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, which opened in 1936. However, due to major events, the fair is not held in some years. Canceled in 1917-18 due to World War I, in 1942-45 due to World War II, and in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 1954, the fair was renamed the Southern California Fair and San Diego County Fair. By 1970, the name was shortened to the Southern California Exposition. However, in 1984, the show was again renamed the Del Mar Expo. This name remained in use until 2002, when the fair returned to its original name: the San Diego County Fair. Despite this, locals often refer to it as the “Del Mar Fairgrounds.”
Unfortunately, a tragic incident occurred at the 2019 show. A 2-year-old boy died and three others contracted pathogenic E. coli after visiting a farm animal exhibit. Although the three affected people did not require hospitalization, the child developed a kidney infection as a result of the infection.
