The best Michelle Williams movies and TV shows all started on the small screen, where she broke out in a teen drama before moving on to Oscar-nominated roles on the big screen. Williams was only 18 when she gained widespread attention for her role as Jen Lindley in the teen drama series Dawson’s Creek as one of the cast’s youngest members. This made her a legitimate TV star, but it took a little while for her to find success in films, which she finally did when she appeared in Brokeback Mountain in 2005.

Since then, Williams has received critical acclaim for several projects, with most of her success in drama films. She mastered portraying broken and damaged people and has received awards for her portrayals of several roles. However, she has also dipped her toes in mainstream blockbusters, with one of her biggest roles coming as Eddie Brock’s ex-wife, Anne Weying, in the Venom movie trilogy. Add in Emmy nominations for Fosse/Verdon, and Williams has seen success at every level of her career.

While it isn’t high art, the first Venom movie was a huge success at the box office, and it shocked critics, who considered it a high point of the Sony Spider-Man franchise (at least the ones without the actual Spider-Man involved). In Venom, Sony took the most popular non-Spider-Man character they had the rights to and created a film that was more fun than it had any right to be. Directed by Ruben Fleischer, the film sees Venom having to battle other symbiotes that arrived on Earth.

Michelle Williams stars as Anne Weying, Eddie Brock’s (Tom Hardy) fiancée, who leaves him when she realizes she can’t trust him anymore. She even gets the chance to bond with Venom and become a symbiote hero herself to save Eddie, meaning Williams has been a superhero at one point in her career. Venom was an enormous success, making $856 million at the box office, one of Sony’s only real hits after losing Spider-Man. Tom Hardy and Michelle Williams even won Best Kiss at the MTV Movie & TV Awards.

The Station Agent was a starring vehicle for Peter Dinklage, who plays Finbar McBride, a quiet man who prefers to live a solitary existence away from all other people. However, he also has a great love of railroads, which comes into play when an old friend named Henry dies and bequeaths him a rural property with an abandoned train depot on it. He moves into the old building, hoping for more solitude, but he soon meets his neighbors, who are outgoing and charm their way into his life.
One of these people is a local librarian named Emily (Michelle Williams), a young woman who learns she is pregnant by her bad-boy boyfriend. This is a movie about outsiders bonding with each other and finding family while trying to overcome their own traumas. The film had a microbudget, so its $8.7 million box office was a tremendous success and critics loved it, delivering a 94% Rotten Tomatoes score. It also won the John Cassavetes Award at the Independent Spirit Awards.

The Greatest Showman was a biopic starring Hugh Jackman as P.T. Barnum, the man who created the Barnum & Bailey Circus. This movie was a musical with nine original songs and was a fictionalized tale of Barnum’s rise to fame, his partial fall, and his triumphant return. The cast was great, with Zac Efron and Zendaya as highlights. However, Michelle Williams turned in an impressive performance as well, playing Charity Hallett-Barnum, the conflicted wife of P. T. Barnum, who he mostly ignored to make his dreams come true.

Michelle Williams played a small, but very important role in Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island. Based on the Dennis Lehane novel, the film features U.S. Marshal Edward “Teddy” Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his new partner, Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo), heading to Shutter Island. There is a mental hospital on the island called the Ashecliffe Hospital and a criminally insane patient has escaped. It is up to the two U.S. Marshals to figure out what happened to the patient.
However, this movie has a major twist at the end that reveals that Teddy is the patient, and he killed his wife after she drowned their three children following her battle with clinical depression. He has blocked it out and refuses to accept his crimes. Michelle Williams stars as his late wife, and there are scenes that show what happened, making her appearances some of the most shocking and depressing parts of this story. Reviews remained mixed, with praise going to the genre slant.

The TV show that made Michelle Williams a star was Dawson’s Creek, which aired from 1998 to 2003. This series followed a group of friends led by Dawson (Jason Van Der Beek), an aspiring student filmmaker. Among these friends were characters played by Katie Holmes, Michelle Williams, and Joshua Jackson. Williams was only 18 when she started acting in the series, just a few years after she won emancipation from her parents. Williams played Jen Lindley, a rich girl from New York exiled to Capeside to live with her grandparents.
Jen is also one of the most important characters in the series, and one of the most tragic, setting the stage for the roles Williams would take on as she got older.
The series ran for six seasons with 128 episodes. It was very popular for the teen crowds, especially. It was a mainstay at the Teen Choice Awards, although, shockingly, Williams never received a nomination at the ceremony. However, she received two nominations at the YoungStar Awards in 1998 and 1999. Jen is also one of the most important characters in the series, and one of the most tragic, setting the stage for the roles Williams would take on as she got older.

In The Fabelmans, Michelle Williams plays Mitzi Fabelman while Paul Dano plays her husband, Burt. However, the main star is their son Sammy (Gabriel LaBelle), who wants to be a filmmaker.
Williams was masterful in her role as the mother, struggling with her own mental health issues while also trying to be there to support her beloved son.
While his dad doesn’t understand his passion, his mother is completely behind him, while also dealing with her own mental health issues. Directed by Simon Curtis and based on the novel by Colin Clark, My Week with Marilyn tells the story of when Marilyn Monroe was making the movie The Prince and the Showgirl, directed by Laurence Olivier. Michelle Williams plays Monroe, while Kenneth Branagh plays Olivier. Also starring in the film is Eddie Redmayne, who plays Colin Clark, a British filmmaker who escorts Marilyn around London after her husband, Arthur Miller (Dougray Scott) returns to America.
The film was only slightly successful at the box office, but thanks to its small budget, it was a minor success. However, it received mostly positive reviews, sitting at 83% on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics praised Williams’ performance, saying that she delivered Marilyn’s vocal style perfectly, while most of the credit for the film’s success came to the acting. My Week with Marilyn earned two Oscar nominations, one for Williams and one for Branagh. Williams won at the BAFTAs and Golden Globes.

Michelle Williams’ best performance of her career came in the 2010 movie Blue Valentine. The film stars Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams as Dean and Cindy. The film moved back and forth in time between their courtship, marriage, and eventually the end of their marriage, several years later. Blue Valentine is a romantic drama that is not an easy watch, as the two actors play characters who were once deeply in love but then realize the entire relationship is toxic, while also shattering a family, as they have a beloved daughter.
Critics praised the film, awarding it an 86% fresh Rotten Tomatoes score, and it landed on several critics’ best-of lists for the year. Most reviews praised Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams, saying the two deliver depth and power in their tough performances. Williams received a nomination for Best Actress at the Academy Awards for her performance, which remains one of her most powerful.
