In Mario vs. Donkey Kong, the player controls Mario on a mission to reclaim stolen Mini Mario toys from Donkey Kong in a toy factory. The gameplay combines puzzle and platforming elements, reminiscent of classic Game Boy Donkey Kong games.
Players guide Mario through a variety of environments, from fiery lava pits to busy construction sites, each with unique obstacles and challenges to overcome. Mario has a repertoire of movement moves, including handstands, cartwheels, and triple jumps, that are essential to effectively navigating the platforming stages.
There are five main levels in the game: collect keys and reach the Mini Mario toys, escort the Mini Mario toys to a safe place, fight Donkey Kong in the Boss Levels, conquer the challenging Plus Levels (where Mario must activate the Mini Mario holding the key), and conquer the toughest challenges in the Expert Levels. Mario vs. Donkey Kong combines classic game mechanics with innovative level design to provide players of all ages with an engaging and challenging experience.
Mario vs Donkey Kong Development
Mario vs. Donkey Kong’s journey began with its predecessor, Donkey Kong Plus, which debuted at E3 2002. At the time, it showcased a cool feature that let players design and store their own levels on the GameCube. These custom creations could then be transferred to the Game Boy Advance using a docking cable. Essentially, Donkey Kong Plus was like a modern version of the classic game Donkey Kong ’94. However, by the following year, this version disappeared to make way for the improved graphics and new gameplay of Mario vs. Donkey Kong.
One notable change in Mario vs. Donkey Kong is the removal of one of the highlights of its predecessors: the ability to create levels. Interestingly, though, traces of a level editor still exist in the game’s programming, and some clever people have managed to unlock it through hacking.
Another little-known aspect of Mario vs. Donkey Kong is its hidden e-reader support. Nintendo held a contest in Japan where lucky winners received special cards. These cards unlocked extra levels in the game. Five level cards were also released by CoroCoro Comic, and another card was given away at the 20th World Hobby Expo. With these cards, players can save up to 12 extra levels, adding more excitement and challenge to the game.
The development process of Mario vs. Donkey Kong was full of changes and surprises. From the original Donkey Kong Plus to the final release, the game went through various changes, leaving some hidden gems and features for players to discover and enjoy.

Mario vs. Donkey Kong tells the story of Mario, the owner of a thriving toy company famous for its Mini Mario wind-up toys. When Donkey Kong sees an enticing TV commercial featuring these adorable toys, he rushes to buy one, only to discover they are sold out. Frustrated, Donkey Kong storms into Mario’s toy factory and steals all the Mini Marios, but Mario chases him down to reclaim his precious creation.
As Mario pursues Donkey Kong, he must overcome various challenges, rescue captured Mini-Marios, and confront the mischievous gorilla multiple times. However, Donkey Kong’s antics escalate when he kidnaps all of the Toads and imprisons them atop a tall building. Undeterred, Mario scales the building, frees the captive Toads, and confronts Donkey Kong once again.
During the final battle, Donkey Kong accidentally causes chaos, steals a truck full of mini-Marios and escapes with them. Mario relentlessly pursues Donkey Kong to reclaim the stolen toys, leading to a thrilling chase through different environments.
After a series of intense confrontations, Mario successfully recaptures most of the Mini-Marios, but six remain captive by Donkey Kong, guarded by his powerful robot mech. In a dramatic climax, Mario defeats Donkey Kong, destroys the mech, and recaptures the remaining toys.
Touched by Donkey Kong’s desire for his toys, Mario extends an olive branch and gives him a Mini-Mario as a token of friendship. In a heartwarming finale, Donkey Kong, Mario, and the Mini-Marios come together to celebrate, highlighting the power of friendship and the shared joy of beloved toys. Throughout the adventure, players experience the thrill of the chase, the excitement of rescuing captured toys, and the satisfaction of overcoming challenges to restore peace between Mario and Donkey Kong.
