From Jason Lee to Justin Long to Jason Mewes, Kevin Smith has brought back a bunch of his regular collaborators to appear in the cast of his latest film, The 4:30 Movie. Shot in Smith’s own movie theater, Smodcastle Cinemas in Atlantic Highlands, The 4:30 Movie is his most personal film in years. It’s a coming-of-age comedy about a group of teenagers theater-hopping across a single day in the 1980s.

Like Wes Anderson and Martin Scorsese, Smith is known for working with the same actors over and over again. Part of that is because most of his films take place in an interconnected universe, the “View Askewniverse,” so a lot of actors play the same characters across different movies. But even his non-Askewniverse films, like The 4:30 Movie, have brought in frequent collaborators like Kate Micucci and Diedrich Bader.

12 Austin Zajur
Previously Seen In Clerks III
Brian, the lead character in The 4:30 Movie (and an avatar for Smith’s own teenage self), is played by Austin Zajur. Zajur rose to prominence with his roles as Neil in Fist Fight, Chuck Steinberg in Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, and Mosquito Boy in Fool’s Paradise. The 4:30 Movie marks Zajur’s second collaboration with Smith after he played the supporting role of Blockchain Coltrane in Clerks III. Blockchain is Elias’ new friend and his partner in their “Buddy Christ Kites” NFT venture.

Kevin Smith has a new movie, and there are options for where to watch The 4:30 movie in theaters or on streaming depending on different factors.

Zajur didn’t have many lines in Clerks III, because Blockchain whispers most of his dialogue in Elias’ ear rather than saying it out loud; Randal dubbed Blockchain “Elias’ own Silent Bob.” In The 4:30 Movie, Zajur has a lot more lines, because he’s the film’s protagonist. He’s also dating Smith’s daughter Harley Quinn Smith in real life.
11 Justin Long
Previously Seen In Zack And Miri Make A Porno, Tusk, And More
Justin Long has a minor role in The 4:30 Movie as Stank. This is the latest in a long line of collaborations between Long and Smith. Long first worked with Smith when he played adult film star Brandon St. Randy in Zack and Miri Make a Porno. He reunited with Smith to play the lead role of Wallace Bryton, a podcaster who gets kidnapped and turned into a walrus, in the horror comedy Tusk, loosely based on a true story.
Long had a cameo appearance as the title characters’ guru, Yogi Bayer, in Yoga Hosers. He reprised his role as Brandon St. Randy to act as Jay and Bob’s lawyer in Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, and he played the perverse orderly who shaved Randal before his heart surgery in Clerks III. At this point, it would be strange if a new Smith movie came out and Long wasn’t in it.
10 Jason Lee
Previously Seen In Mallrats, Chasing Amy, And More
Jason Lee appears in The 4:30 Movie as Brian’s dad. Lee has been a regular collaborator of Smith’s since his second feature, Mallrats, in which Lee played the lead role of Brodie Bruce. In Smith’s third movie, Chasing Amy, Lee played comic book artist Banky Edwards, the creative partner of Ben Affleck’s writer character, Holden McNeil. In Smith’s fourth film, the religious satire Dogma, Lee played the main villain: the angel of death, Azrael.
Lee reprised his roles as both Brodie and Banky in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. He made cameo appearances as a PR executive in Jersey Girl and as Lance Dowds in Clerks II, and he played Roy, the arrogant new husband of Bruce Willis’ character’s ex-wife, in Cop Out. Lee reprised his role as Brodie once again in Jay and Silent Bob Reboot.
9 Kate Micucci
Previously Seen In Jay And Silent Bob Reboot And Clerks III
The mother of Brian’s love interest Melody is played by Kate Micucci in The 4:30 Movie. Micucci is best known as one half of the musical comedy duo Garfunkel and Oates, along with Riki Lindhome. She’s also known for her TV roles as Stephanie Gooch in Scrubs, Ally in ‘Til Death, Shelley in Raising Hope, and Raj’s romantic interest Lucy in The Big Bang Theory. She’s also a prolific voice actor, having played Sadie Miller in Steven Universe, Clayface in The Lego Batman Movie, and Velma Dinkley in a handful of Scooby-Doo productions.
Micucci first worked with Smith when she played a clerk at a Mooby’s restaurant in Jay and Silent Bob Reboot. She reteamed with Smith to play a minor role as Mary in Clerks III. The 4:30 Movie marks Micucci’s third collaboration with Smith.
8 Genesis Rodriguez
Previously Seen In Tusk And Yoga Hosers
Genesis Rodriguez has a role as an usher at the movie theater in The 4:30 Movie. Rodriguez previously played Courtney in the pregnancy comedy What to Expect When You’re Expecting, Agent Ellen Richards in the Arnold Schwarzenegger-starring neo-western The Last Stand, and Gabriela Conlon in the Liam Neeson-starring action thriller Run All Night. She also played voice roles as Honey Lemon in the Disney animated superhero movie Big Hero 6 and Perfuma in the Netflix cartoon series She-Ra and the Princesses of Power.
Rodriguez first worked with Smith when she played Ally Leon, Wallace’s unfaithful girlfriend, in Tusk. Ally takes a lead role in the film’s second half as she goes looking for her missing boyfriend. Rodriguez also had a supporting role as a gym teacher named Ms. Wicklund in Yoga Hosers. The 4:30 Movie marks Rodriguez’s third collaboration with Smith.
7 Diedrich Bader
Previously Seen In The Jay And Silent Bob Movies
Diedrich Bader appears in The 4:30 Movie with arguably the best character name in the entire ensemble: Damocles. Bader is comedy nerd royalty, having played such iconic roles as Bill Ericsson in Veep, Rex in Napoleon Dynamite, Rich in Better Things, and Peter’s blue-collar next-door neighbor Lawrence in Office Space. He’s also known for voicing Bruce Wayne in Batman: The Brave and the Bold (as well as various other Batman media).
Bader first worked with Smith when he played a security guard who chases Jay and Bob around the Miramax lot in the third act of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. Bader also played a security guard in Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, in keeping with that movie being a self-aware rehash of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. The 4:30 Movie is Bader’s third appearance in one of Smith’s films.
6 Harley Quinn Smith
Previously Seen In Yoga Hosers, Jay And Silent Bob Reboot, And More
Smith’s own daughter, Harley Quinn Smith, appears in The 4:30 Movie as Sister Sugar Walls. Sister Sugar Walls is a nun hiding a secret in a movie-within-a-movie that the characters watch at the theater. Smith has been appearing in her dad’s movies since she was a baby. She played her dad’s character Silent Bob as a baby in the opening scene of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. She played Trace Colelli in Jersey Girl and the kid who inspires Dante to embrace fatherhood in Clerks II.
Smith scored her first leading role as convenience store clerk Colleen McKenzie in Yoga Hosers, reprising her cameo role from Tusk. She played Jay’s estranged daughter Millennium “Milly” Faulken in Jay and Silent Bob Reboot and Clerks III. She also played Wendy in KillRoy Was Here, which was released as an NFT.
5 Method Man
Previously Seen In Jay And Silent Bob Reboot
Method Man plays the role of Cookie in The 4:30 Movie. Method Man is best known as a rapper, having been a member of the Wu-Tang Clan and the hip-hop duo Method Man & Redman, but he’s also had plenty of acting roles. He played Tug Daniels in Oz and Melvin “Cheese” Wagstaff in The Wire, and he’s currently starring as Davis MacLean in Power Book II: Ghost.
He famously starred in the 2001 stoner comedy How High, of which Jay and Silent Bob are huge fans. In Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, Method Man and Redman played themselves appearing to Jay and Bob in a drug-induced hallucination. Method Man had a lot of fun playing himself in that movie, but in The 4:30 Movie, he gets to flex his acting muscles and play a fictional character.
4 Betty Aberlin
Previously Seen In Dogma, Jersey Girl, And More
Betty Aberlin plays Mrs. B in The 4:30 Movie. Aberlin is best known for playing Lady Aberlin on the kids’ TV show Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, a part she played for the series’ entire 33-year run. She also appeared in The Smothers Brothers Show and various New York theater productions, but later in her life, she became a frequent collaborator of Smith’s.

Abelin has popped up in a bunch of Smith’s movies. She first worked with Smith when she played a nun in Dogma, and went on to play similar small roles in many of his subsequent films. She played a teacher in Jersey Girl, Mrs. Copley in Zack and Miri Make a Porno, Abigail in Red State, and Cordelia in the NFT movie, KillRoy Was Here. The 4:30 Movie is Aberlin’s sixth collaboration with Smith.
3 Jeff Anderson
Previously Seen In The Clerks Trilogy And More
Jeff Anderson has a cameo appearance in The 4:30 Movie as a dad at the concession stand in the theater. Anderson is one of Smith’s earliest collaborators, having played iconic slacker Randal Graves in his indie debut feature, Clerks. Anderson reprised his role as Randal in both Clerks sequels. He also made a cameo appearance as Randal in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and voiced Randal in the animated TV spin-off, Clerks: The Animated Series.
Related Kevin Smith’s New Movie Is Repeating 1 Thing That Made Clerks & Mallrats So Great
Kevin Smith just secured a distribution deal for The 4:30 Movie, which is taking him back to his comedy roots with a Clerks-like hangout story.
Anderson has appeared in Smith’s movies in other roles, too. He had a cameo as a gun salesman in Dogma and played Deacon, the cameraman who shoots the eponymous amateur porno, in Zack and Miri Make a Porno. The 4:30 Movie is the seventh of Smith’s movies that Anderson has appeared in – and the third where he doesn’t play Randal.
2 Jason Biggs
Previously Seen In Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back, Jersey Girl, And More
Jason Biggs makes a cameo appearance as a construction worker in The 4:30 Movie. Biggs is best known for playing Jim Levenstein in the American Pie franchise. Biggs has since played such roles as Anderson in Wedding Daze, Darren Silverman in Saving Silverman, and Charlie Cooper in Eight Below. He’s currently working on his directorial debut, Getaway, in which he’ll star with Meaghan Rath and Arturo Castro.
Biggs first collaborated with Smith when he made a cameo appearance as himself in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. He played a larger role as Arthur Brickman, the protégé of Ben Affleck’s character, in Jersey Girl. Biggs reunited with Smith a decade and a half later when he played himself in Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, in a tongue-in-cheek reference to his cameo from the previous film.
1 Jason Mewes
Previously Seen In Every View Askewniverse Movie And More
Credited simply as “A John,” Jason Mewes appears in The 4:30 Movie. Mewes is one of Smith’s closest friends and collaborators. He’s not just an actor who often appears in Smith’s movies; he’s the other half of Smith’s iconic double act, Jay and Silent Bob. Whereas Smith plays Bob, who only speaks when he has something profound and meaningful to say, Mewes plays Jay, who never shuts up and never says anything substantial.
Mewes has played Jay in every movie in the View Askewniverse: Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Clerks II, Jay & Silent Bob’s Super Groovy Cartoon Movie!, Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, and Clerks III. Mewes also played adult film actor Lester in Zack and Miri Make a Porno and a renegade cop in Yoga Hosers. The 4:30 Movie is the latest of many Smith-helmed movies that Mewes has appeared in, but it’s just the third in which he doesn’t play Jay.
