- He became an early investor in Berkshire Hathaway, and the two companies partnered to create Diversified Retail, the company founded by Gottesman, Buffett and Charlie Munger to acquire private retail companies.
- Diversified Retail faced challenges, forcing Gottesman to oversee its resale at a small loss. The company later merged with Berkshire Hathaway in 1978.
