What’s New

Full synchronization challenge

Think you’ve seen it all with Assassin’s Creed: Phantasms? Our newest game mode, Total Synchronicity (aka Permadeath), is the ultimate test of your Assassin skills.

When enabled, if Basim dies or commits an illegal action (e.g. killing a citizen, going outside of an authorized map location), he will lose sync with the animus.

When Basim is out of sync with the animus, instead of the usual out-of-sync reload screen, a new display appears showing stats for game time, total skirmishes, causes of death, number of enemies killed, assassin level, and the chosen game difficulty.

Assassin’s Creed Phantoms

Developed by Ubisoft Bordeaux and published by Ubisoft in 2023, Assassin’s Creed: Phantoms is the thirteenth major game in the series after Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla. Set in 9th century Baghdad during the Islamic Golden Age, the game tells the story of Basim ibn Ishaq, a former street thief who became the Hidden One, and his fight for peace and freedom with the Order of the Ancients.

Mirage was originally conceived as an expansion for Valhalla, but later became a standalone game with a larger scope. Lead developer Ubisoft Bordeaux aimed to return to the series’ roots, prioritizing stealth, parkour, and assassination over recent role-playing elements. The game is smaller in scale and blends features from recent and earlier Assassin’s Creed games.

Mirage’s story explores Basim’s inner struggle as he juggles his duties as the Invisible Man while uncovering his own mysterious past. The game was released in October 2023 on multiple platforms, including PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, and received critical acclaim for its world design, stealth focus, and return to the series’ roots.

Some critics highlighted concerns about the characters and the story’s reliance on previous entries in the series. A mobile version is scheduled to launch in early 2024 on iPhone 15 Pro models.

Assassin’s Creed Phantoms gameplay

“Assassin’s Creed: Phantasm” is an action-adventure stealth game that continues the style of the series’ early works, emphasizing linear narrative and reducing role-playing elements. The core gameplay focuses on parkour, close combat and stealth.

The “black box” assassination mission design introduced in “Unity” and “Syndicate” returns again, requiring players to explore the environment to find multiple ways to eliminate their targets.

Phantasm is primarily set in Baghdad, including unique districts like the Round City and Kalkh, but also smaller towns like Anbar. Alamut, the Hidden Ones’ stronghold, plays a major role in the storyline. Baghdad is more compact than recent Assassin’s Creed worlds.

The protagonist Basim has a rich arsenal of weapons, including the iconic hidden blade, smoke bombs, throwing knives and poison darts. The power of weapons and tools can be enhanced through skill tree upgrades.

Basim has Eagle Vision, and a scouting companion, Enkidu, the Eastern Empire Eagle. Unlike previous games, Enkidu can be targeted by enemy shooters, so he must be eliminated before he can be used again.

The new Assassin’s Focus skill allows Basim to eliminate multiple enemies at once, supplemented by stealth assassinations. While activated, time stops, allowing up to five enemies to be marked and quickly killed.

Additionally, new pole functionality helps traverse wide gaps, and refined animations enhance overall maneuverability, drawing inspiration from samurai, ninja, and Jedi styles.

After Basim inadvertently causing the death of the Caliph by stealing an important artifact, he was persecuted and his relationship with his childhood friend Nehal was torn apart. Basim sought refuge with the Hidden Ones, trained under Roshan, and discovered the influence of the Order of the Ancients in Baghdad.

He confronts key members of the Order and eliminates them while reuniting with Nihal, who questions the Hidden Ones’ motives. As Basim investigates further, he discovers a hidden Isu temple beneath Alamut, which leads to a conflict with Roshan. Despite the conflict, Basim accepts his true identity as Loki, realizing that Nihal and the jinn are manifestations of repressed memories.

After Basim regained his memories after merging with Nehal, he rejoined the Hidden Ones and forced Roshan to resign. Basim knows his past well, and he looks forward to reuniting with those who imprisoned him, which will start a new chapter in his life.
