10 Moments From Sunrise On The Reaping That I Can’t Wait To See In The Next Hunger Games Movie

Warning: This list contains SPOILERS for Suzanne Collins’ novel Sunrise on the Reaping. The newest prequel installment of The Hunger Games already has a movie adaptation in the works, which was confirmed shortly after the book was announced. As The Hunger Games has already seen five high-quality, well-acted and relatively well-reviewed movies, fans of the series are doubtlessly eager to see the next film take shape. Covering the events of the 50th Hunger Games, Sunrise on the Reaping‘s movie will mean casting a young Haymitch, as well as younger versions of several other established Hunger Games characters.

Sunrise on the Reaping proved to be an especially gruesome and heartbreaking new book for the series, laying the foundation for a difficult and gut-wrenching movie to make. There will be some moments that audiences can enjoy for the sake of it, but all are still in service of a tragic story about people living in a tyrannical system. Whether it be for spectacle or catharsis, Suzanne Collins has now written many more scenes into existence that will impact viewers when they reach the cinematic format.

Meeting Everyone In District 12

Haymitch Passes By Several Important Characters The Day Of The Reaping

Close

Sunrise on the Reaping, as a movie, has more reason to give a more complete version of Haymitch’s morning before the reaping than it did with Katniss. Practically everyone Haymitch encounters in this chapter are Easter Eggs for Hunger Games fans, so there is reason to keep them. This includes Haymitch’s first scene with Lenore Dove in the meadow, the only peaceful and happy moment we get with them in the main timeline. This could also lead to showing Clerk Carmine and Tam Amber, Lucy Gray’s Covey family members.

Haymitch also sees Hattie, the woman whom he helps produce liquor illegally, who would be fun to include in the movie. He then visits the apothecary owned by the March family and sees their daughter Asterid — Katniss’ mother. Haymitch also stands by Katniss’ father, Burdock Everdeen, at the reaping. Showing the sequence of all these characters may be complicated for the movie, but it will tug on viewers’ heartstrings and help paint the picture of life in District 12.

Haymitch Faces Snow At Tribute Parade

Haymitch Makes President Snow “Own” A Little Girl’s Death

President Snow addressing tributes at parade in Hunger Games

Haymitch’s tribute parade goes wrong, due to the crowd being drunk and someone setting off fireworks, which startles the horses pulling their chariot and leads to the sudden death of Louella McCoy, one of District 12’s tributes. The Hunger Games is filled with many tragic deaths, and this is another of a young child that reinforces the nature of the dictatorship these characters live in. Haymitch is in shock but, spurred on by his other fellow District 12 tributes, Maysilee and Wyatt, he refuses to give up Louella’s body immediately.

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is finally here, and these are the biggest revelations from Haymitch Abernathy’s prequel story.

In the general chaos of all the horses running wild, Haymitch manages to get a hold of a chariot and direct its horses and rides it up to the presidential manor, where Snow is watching from the balcony. Haymitch lays Louella’s body down in front of Snow and faces him, implicitly demanding that he confront his involvement in her murder. With good casting choices for both Haymitch and a middle-aged Snow, this is going to be a very powerful moment that reminds the audience of what’s at stake.

District 12 Tributes Meet Their Mentors

Some Friendly Faces Make A Reappearance When Haymitch Needs Them

Close

A more pleasant plot twist in Sunrise on the Reaping comes in the form of District 12’s mentors’ arrival. At this point, the Capitol has implemented the practice of past victors mentoring the tributes, but as District 12 has no victors, some from other districts are assigned to them. Mags and Wiress are a delightful return for the readers, while they are genuinely comforting to the tributes. Mags has been seen on television taking care of her tributes before, and Haymitch immediately breaks down in her arms after Louella’s death.

Wiress won the Hunger Games only a year before Haymitch, in a fascinating story where she understood the mirror-laden arena better than the Gamesmakers and won by hiding in a blind spot, without killing anyone. Seeing different versions of Mags and Wiress onscreen is going to be compelling, as audiences come to understand them at this point in the burgeoning rebellion, and how their own experiences with the Games play into the series’ bigger themes.

The Tributes Almost Revolt In Training

A Tense Moment In Training For The Hunger Games Could Have Taken The Story In A Different Direction

Training in the Hunger Games

The 50th Hunger Games sees an alliance form among most of the non-Career districts, making for a much bigger, unified force than usual. And this becomes especially dangerous for the Capitol when a basket of knives is accidentally knocked over in training. The tributes all start picking up the knives, as though they are just helping, but then all pause for a moment when they realize that there are limited peacekeepers around. They are all armed and could fight back.

If the movie handles it well, it will be a very tense moment that reminds everyone that the Capitol has always been outnumbered, and the districts are a threat to them.

The moment passes, and they all return the knives to the basket. However, Haymitch ponders the moment for a while afterward, especially when a younger Plutarch Heavensbee asks him why they didn’t launch an attack. If the movie handles it well, it will be a very tense moment that reminds everyone that the Capitol has always been outnumbered, and the districts are a threat to them, a fact that will eventually make the rebellion possible.

Effie Trinket’s Return

Effie Has Always Been One Of The Goofier Aspects Of The Hunger Games

Close

Also a wild plot twist is when a member of Haymitch’s prep team turns out to be the younger sister of Effie Trinket. Proserpina calls her sister in a panic when District 12’s negligent stylist provides them with nothing to wear to their interviews — Effie then gets a very dramatic entrance a bit later when she shows up with a collection of old family clothes and makeup and starts pulling everything together. Despite her affiliation with the Capitol, Effie is a fan-favorite character, and this scene leans into the reasons why.

Hunger Games Novel Sequel Is Unlikely To Happen, Says Publisher

Despite author Suzanne Collins releasing multiple prequels to The Hunger Games, it seems unlikely that Mockingjay will ever get a sequel.

Posts

Haytmich views Effie similar to how Katniss sees her prep team; he notes that “At least the Trinkets aren’t mean, just clueless,” and appreciates how nice they all look and how this will help them win sponsors. Effie and Maysilee are also 100% on the same page as they discuss Lou Lou (Louella’s replacement) and Maysilee’s makeup. Effie does her best no matter what situation she is in, from escorting tributes to aiding the rebellion, and her arrival actually shows the start of her odd bond with Haymitch.

Tribute Interviews

The Tributes, Once Again, Use The Interviews To Their Advantage

Close

The tribute interviews also have a history of being an extravaganza in the Hunger Games movies, where the tributes and victors tend to incite chaos by insulting the Capitol or just being very rebellious in character. Moments before District 12 goes on, their stylist bothers to show up and adds a live snake to Lou Lou’s ensemble. With their turns on stage, Wyatt runs circles around everyone with his knowledge of numbers, discussing different tributes betting odds, while Maysilee just brutally insults the fashion choices of everyone in sight.

Lou Lou is shockingly comfortable with her snake, enthralling everyone but also shattering the picture for a moment when she calls them all murders. Haymitch then wraps it up with snarky comments and openness about his bootlegging business. Sunrise on the Reaping‘s round of interviews is going to be a wild ride in theaters, due to the mix of comedy coming from the tributes just freaking out the capitol and the darker moments of pointing out what this all is — all with the return of the very charismatic Caeser Flickerman.

Haymitch Flooding The Arena

Haymitch Undertakes A Daring Rebel Mission

The arena from The Hunger Games Catching Fire

Described as a practically perfect action sequence in the Sunrise on the Reaping book, Haymitch is made part of a plan to break the arena by flooding its central control. With help from Beetee’s son Ampert, Haymitch manages to find one of the entry points to the arena that the Capitol’s mutts come in through. From there, he descends into what is essentially the catacombs of the arena — which are supposed to only be used by the Gamemakers — and rigs an explosive to destroy the water reserve.

While reading, one can see how this will be a stellar, tense scene, revealing a part of the arena we have never seen on-screen before, with Haymitch trying to execute the plan and get out in time — accompanied by a huge explosion which results in the arena glitching and then a volcano erupting. While this mission is unsuccessful and only ends in more tragedy, it is sure to be another thrilling part of the Hunger Games series overall.

Haymitch & Maysilee Reunite

The Moment We Are All Waiting For In Sunrise On The Reaping

Haymitch writes on a board in Hunger Games

Going into Sunrise on the Reaping, readers probably expected it to be much more about Haymitch and Maysilee than it actually is. However, she is a captivating and stubborn character during the time Haymitch spends with her leading up to the Games, and it is easy to miss her when Haymitch is alone in the arena. Of course, we all know that they will meet up again eventually, and this happens when Maysilee arrives just in time to kill District 1’s Panache and save Haymitch.

These two are essentially the main characters of this story, and the moment when they come together again is sure to be a brief relief for the audience.

From the start, this will mark a change in the movie as it becomes about Haymitch and Maysilee working together, a near-unstoppable duo. The official version of these Games that Katniss and Peeta watch years later edits out much about Haymitch and Maysilee’s alliance, including that they never really broke it off. These two are essentially the main characters of this story, and the moment when they come together again is sure to be a brief relief for the audience.

Haymitch Shares Chocolates With Wellie & Silka

The Hunger Games Humanizes All The Tributes

Leven Rambin as Glimmer in Hunger Games

The final three tributes end up being Haymitch; Silka, a girl from District 1; and Wellie, one of the smaller District 6 tributes whom Haymitch refers to as “his doves.” When Haymitch finds Wellie again, she is nearly dead from starvation, and he is struggling to get any food in her, and the sponsor gift of potentially stomach-turning chocolate is perhaps not the most helpful. However, he touchingly takes care of Wellie and feeds her some chocolate, when he realizes that Silka is at the base of the tree they are in, crying.

Haymitch doesn’t question for a moment why Silka is crying and drops her a few chocolates as well. Collins has always paid attention to all the tributes’ stories, emphasizing that even the Career tributes, positioned as enemies to the main characters in the context of the arena, are still children sentenced to death. In this book, Haymitch’s brief moment with Silka is one of the best reminders of their humanity that should make it to screen.

Haymitch & Lenore Dove’s Epilogue

Haymitch Gets Something Of A Happy Ending, Which Could Be Elevated By The Movie

Close

Sunrise on the Reaping‘s epilogue skips ahead many years, to Haymitch speaking about the time after the war and telling Katniss and Peeta about his games and Lenore Dove. Haymitch also still believes that he will reunite with Lenore Dove in the afterlife, and still “sees” her over the years. Notably, he doesn’t picture her as a ghost of her teenage self, but aging with him.

The Hunger Games: Sunrise On The Reaping Ending Explained

There’s a lot to unpack after the ending of The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, but the prequel’s final chapters are surprisingly hopeful.

Posts

Adapting this epilogue in Sunrise on the Reaping is obviously a natural way for Woody Harrelson to return, and also may warrant casting an older version of Lenore Dove. I at least hope it could make for a peaceful, somewhat happy ending to show them reuniting as adults through a dream or death, after what will be a horrific movie. In the book, Collins completes Haymitch’s arc perfectly by describing Haymitch’s relationship with Katniss and Peeta from his perspective, and his assertion that he never really lost his love.
