David Cary Webb Chappelle (born August 24, 1973 in Washington, D.C.) is an American stand-up comedian and actor. He is best known for being the star and co-creator of the satirical sketch comedy series Chappelle’s Show, which aired from 2003 to 2006.

Chappelle’s sudden departure during production of the third season was a notable moment in his career. After a period of hiatus, he is back and has resumed his talk show appearances across the U.S.

• David Khari Webber Chappelle was born on August 24, 1973 in Washington, D.C.
• His father, William David Chappelle III, was a professor of vocal performance and dean of students at Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio.
• Chappell’s mother, Yvonne Seong, worked for Congolese Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba. She is a Unitarian Universalist minister who has served as a professor and college administrator at institutions including Wright State University and Prince George’s Community College.
• Chappelle was politically active while growing up, and visitors to his home included such notables as Pete Seeger and Johnny Hartman.
• During one of his visits, Johnny Hartman predicted that Chappelle would become a comedian. During this time, Chappelle drew inspiration from comedians Eddie Murphy and Richard Pryor.
• After his parents separated, Chappelle spent time with his mother in Washington, D.C., and spent summers with his father in Ohio.
