Pokémon Go
Pokémon Go is an iOS and Android mobile game released in 2016 as part of the Pokémon series and uses augmented reality (AR). Developed by Niantic in partnership with Nintendo and The Pokémon Company, the game uses GPS on mobile devices to locate, capture, train and battle players’ virtual Pokémon in real-world environments. The game follows a free-to-play model with optional in-app purchases for additional items.
It initially launched with around 150 Pokémon, and expanded to around 700 in 2021. Despite mixed reviews due to technical issues, Pokémon Go became one of the most downloaded and profitable mobile apps in 2016, with over 500 million downloads worldwide.

Although it has been criticized for accidents and public disruption, it has played an important role in popularizing location-based and AR technology, encouraging physical activity, and benefiting local businesses. As of May 2018, the game had more than 147 million monthly active users, more than 1 billion downloads worldwide by early 2019, and revenue of more than $6 billion in 2020.
Pokémon Go Gameplay
In Pokémon GO, players embark on a real-world adventure and explore maps featuring PokéStops and Gyms. PokéStops and larger tower-like gyms marked with blue (or purple, if visited) icons are important locations. These locations are typically located at points of interest, provide in-game items, and serve as arenas for team competition.
To capture Pokémon, players use Poké Balls, flicking them across the screen during encounters. Unlike traditional Pokémon games, battles with wild Pokémon are replaced with a throwing mechanic to catch them. The game encourages physical activity and connects the Pokémon’s appearance to real-world locations. Players customize their avatars and interact with the game map, encountering different Pokémon species in different areas. In-app purchases of items such as Poké Balls and Lure Modules can enhance gameplay.
Evolving Pokémon, increasing combat power (CP), and completing the Pokédex are key goals. Gyms and Raids offer team battles, while Trainer Battles and Go League introduce player-versus-player combat. Team GO Rocket’s battles with NPCs and the purification of Shadow Pokémon further add to the depth of the game.
