complete plot
During a bombing mission in April 1943, Louis “Louie” Zamperini was serving as a bombardier on a B-24 Liberator, which suffered damage and injuries. Despite the exploding tire, the pilot managed to bring the plane to a stop.
Recalling his youth in Torrance, California, Louie’s mischievous behavior and Italian ethnicity made him a target for bullying. His brother Peter recognized his talent for running and trained him to become a disciplined distance runner. Louis performed well at the 1936 Summer Olympics, setting a record in the 5,000-meter race.
In 1943, Louie and the surviving crew returned to the battlefield, flying an old airplane on a search and rescue mission. One engine failed, causing it to plunge into the sea. Louie, Phil and Mike survive on two rafts.
After 27 days adrift, they encountered a Japanese fighter plane, which damaged the raft but missed them. Mike died six days later. On Day 47, Japanese sailors captured Louis and Phil. They were made prisoners of war and interrogated for information. Louis was sent to different POW camps and faced brutal treatment at the hands of Japanese Corporal Mutsuhiro Watanabe.
While in captivity, Louis was given the opportunity to broadcast messages to his home, but refused to promote anti-American propaganda. As punishment, he suffered a severe beating from Watanabe. Two years later, Watanabe was promoted to sergeant and the prisoners were transferred to Naoetsu prisoner of war camp.
After the war, Louis and other prisoners of war were liberated by the Americans. Louis tried to find Watanabe, but found that he had escaped. Upon returning to the United States, Louis embraced his freedom.
In his later years, Louis married and had children. He kept his promise to convert to Christianity, forgave his kidnappers, and met with some of them. However, Watanabe remains elusive. Louis participated in the 1998 Winter Olympics torch relay and lived a long life, passing away on July 2, 2014 at the age of 97.
