Warframe is a free-to-play game in which you play as a member of the Tenno, ancient warriors who have awakened in the future and are now locked in a space war. The game, produced by Digital Extremes, was first released on PC in 2013 and has since been released on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. You can play with your friends no matter what device they use, as they add cross-platform play in 2022 and cross-platform saves in 2024.
In Warframe, you control Tenno using cool suits called Warframes and a variety of weapons to complete missions. Some missions have levels that change each time you play, and there are large open world areas like other online games. You can play against computer enemies or other players. The game is free, but you can buy things for real money if you want, although you can also earn them by playing the game. Warframe started out as an idea in 2000 as part of another game called Dark Sector, but in 2012 it became its own game. Not many people played it at first, but now it has become a huge success with nearly 50 million players.
Warframe Gameplay
Warframe is a free-to-play action game where players control powerful creatures called Tenno, initially operating biomechanical combat units called “Warframes”. Starting with basic weapons and an AI-powered spaceship called an Orbiter, players explore the Origin System. As the game progresses, players gain direct control of the real Tenno protagonist “Operator”, gaining unique abilities. The operator can further transform into a mechanical combat unit called a “Necramech” and use an “Archwing” to engage in space combat.
The game features a variety of missions with objectives including defeating enemies, covert operations, rescue and defense scenarios. Players can play solo or cooperatively with up to four players, using parkour moves to navigate randomly generated maps. Missions generate rewards, in-game currency, and items that enhance gear and abilities. The cooperative nature of the game extends to player-versus-player content in Conclave.
Players can upgrade their Warframes and weapons using “Mods” to customize attributes and gain new abilities. Equipment blueprints, building resources, and modules are obtained through missions, and some rare items can be obtained through in-game currency or microtransactions. Warframe is designed to be no-pay-to-win, allowing players to earn gear through play while spending in-game currency or premium currency to speed up progress or unlock cosmetic items.

Warframe’s roots can be traced back to Digital Extremes’ original vision for its last game, Dark Sector. Prior to Warframe, Digital Extremes was primarily a support studio, working with Epic Games on projects such as Unreal Tournament. A planned merger with Epic failed due to complications with the Canadian government, leaving Digital Extremes to go its own way.
In an effort to establish itself as a leading studio, Digital Extremes launched Dark Sector in 2000. Originally described as a fusion of the action of Unreal Tournament with the vast character evolution of a persistent online universe, the game has gone through multiple transformations over the years. Despite the re-announcement of Darkside and a new direction in 2004, inspired by the Metal Gear Solid series and artist Jean Giraud, finding a publisher still proved challenging. The publisher proposed various setting changes, from World War II to the superhero genre, resulting in compromises of the game’s vision.
Darkside was eventually released in 2008, and was a far cry from the original concept, receiving mixed reviews and limited financial success. Digital Extremes resumed work-for-hire projects, including contributions to BioShock, BioShock 2, Homefront, and Darkside 2, before pivoting Warframe into its own unique identity.
