Until Dawn’s 8 Most Creative & Memorable Deaths

Based on the survival horror video game of the same name, the supernatural horror movie Until Dawn is loaded with grisly and gruesome kills. While it is inspired by the original 2015 video game, the movie makes several key additions, like an updated setting, supernatural primary antagonist, and a mysterious time loop. The heart of the game remains the same, however, as the individuals in the movie need to make it through the night despite a vicious onslaught of monsters and an environment teeming with lethal elements.

Until Dawn leans into the fact that the characters are killed each night by showcasing a parade of increasingly creative and gory kills, some of which are more memorable than others. As the repeated nights wear on, the group even begins to force their own deaths in an effort to start the night over again using new information that they’ve gained. By the end of Until Dawn, the result is a truly impressive display of death from a creativity standpoint, which includes terrifying monsters, gut-churning body horror, and plenty of blood.

Clover’s Face Worm

Something Crawls Into Clover’s Face

Close

Past the halfway point of Until Dawn, the friends realize that Abe has been recording each of their explorations of their surroundings in the hope that they might be able to compile enough information to figure out how to survive the night. As they flip through the various videos on his phone, one stands out given its relative simplicity. In the video, some sort of wormlike insect has found purchase on Clover’s (Ella Rubin) face, and wriggles inside as Abe tries to pull it out.

The camera pulls away for just a moment before returning to Clover’s face, which instantly becomes blackened, cracked, and veiny on the side that the worm crawled in. The audience doesn’t actually see the moment that the worm leads to Clover’s death, but the point is driven home. It’s memorable in its universality; the notion of any sort of creepy-crawly on one’s body freaks out most people, and the thought of one getting inside your body is enough to unsettle the most hardened horror movie heroes.

Megan’s Possessed Neck Snap

Megan Meets A Quick End While Levitating

While the masked killer (known in the game as “The Psycho”) took the group out on the first night, it’s a witch from the previously non-existent house next door that does them in on night #2, and she uses an invisible entity to invade the house, and ultimately the body of Megan (Ji-young Yoo). After the friends track and follow her through the house, they find Megan levitating, clearly not in control of her own body anymore. After some back-and-forth, Megan’s neck is suddenly snapped from within. The suddenness (and audible crack) makes this particular death one to remember.

Megan’s First Encounter With The Psycho

The Masked Killer Smashes Her Face Into The Ground

Poor Megan appears on this list multiple times, as it seemed like she often caught the worst version of whatever common death claimed the group on any particular night. On the first night, they are all taken out by The Psycho in horrific fashion. Megan is caught from behind by the hulking killer, and he simply beats her head against the floor until she’s dead. It’s shocking in its sheer brutality, and memorable for Megan’s heartbreaking stare as he holds her face up in-between smacks on the floor, just so the audience can see her face turning to pulp.

Max’s Intentional Eruption

The Town’s Deadly Water Is Used On Purpose

The goriest deaths are undoubtedly caused by the water that can be found in Glore Valley. Holed up in a bathroom planning to wait the night out, the entire group drinks from the tap, and shortly after their bodies explode in a glorious detonation of blood and viscera. Max later triggers this death intentionally, and makes it far more memorable. When he and Clover are trapped in the woods after running from the Melanie Wendigo, he intentionally drinks water dripping from a tree root and runs at the creature, hoping to blow it up, but explodes before he reaches her.

Max Gets A Splinter In His Eye

Max’s First Encounter With The Psycho Is Incredibly Violent

Virtually all the kills from the first night were memorable, and Max’s was among the most creative. In an attempt to subdue the masked psychopath who had nothing but slaughter on his mind, Max breaks a chair over his back. However, all he did was hand The Psycho a weapon; the silent killer picks up a shattered spine of wood from the chair debris and jams it deep into Max’s eye, penetrating his brain and killing him instantly. No detail is spared when it comes to showing the shard entering his eye socket, making this death not for the squeamish.

Abe, But In Two Parts

The Psycho Really Went All-Out The First Time Around

Close

The Psycho’s weapon of choice is a massive pickaxe, although he doesn’t seem to be picky about killing by whatever method he can conjure once his victim is in his grasp. Abe discovers the lethality of his chosen weapon on night #1, as the masked killer viciously slashes him across the abdomen, horizontally bisecting him. There is a brief but stomach-churning image of Abe’s innards spilling out, which puts this death pretty high on the list as far as memorability is concerned.

Slasher Gets Sledgehammered

The Psycho Gets His Brains Bashed

The group of friends gets a measure of revenge on The Psycho on their final night, as they manage to overpower him during their attempted escape. An intelligent team-up manages to disarm the killer of the massive, impossibly heavy, bone-breaking sledgehammer that he intended to wield against them, and once he’s on the ground they work as a group to lift the weapon high in the air. They bring it down directly on his skull, which absolutely explodes in a mess of brain and blood. It’s a creative and memorable exclamation point to their murderous relationship with The Psycho.

Megan’s Gradual Exploding Water End

The Oft-Used Kill At Its Gnarliest

Ji-young Yoo as Megan in Until Dawn

We have to revisit poor Megan one last time on this list, as she of course got the worst of the exploding water deaths as well. While everyone else received fairly instant deaths thanks to full-body explosions, Megan’s death was unfortunately dragged out and incredibly painful. To begin, Megan’s leg exploded independently of the rest of her body. Next, her stomach swelled up before it too erupted in gore, but she was still left alive. Her misery finally ended when her head exploded, but it was still the most jaw-droppingly cruel and memorable death in Until Dawn.
