Unicorn Overlord

Unicorn Overlord is an upcoming tactical role-playing game created by Takafumi Noma in 2014 and developed by Vanillaware. The game is published by Atlus and will be released on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S on March 8, 2024. The storyline unfolds in the war-torn continent of Fevrith, where the exiled prince Alain strives to reclaim his kingdom from the Zenoiran Empire led by the rogue general Valmore.

Players will guide Alan and his army into real-time large-scale battles, including field moves and combat. This concept was proposed by Noma and approved by Vanillaware founder George Kamitani, aiming to recreate the essence of classic tactical games from the 1990s.

Noma served as director, programmer and lead artist, and spent ten years on the project, overlapping with other Vanillaware projects. The game’s music was composed by Mitsuhiro Kaneda’s team at Basiscape, adding to the immersive experience. Unicorn Overlord promises a modern take on nostalgic tactics games, combining strategic gameplay with an engaging storyline.

In the magical world of Unicorn Overlord, players can explore a variety of unique professions, each offering different skills and abilities. Each character has a predetermined profession, weapon, and combat skills, and the strategic depth of the game increases as players embark on their journey and overcome challenges and enemies from different countries.

Rosalind	A Dark Elf fortuneteller and sister of Eltolinde. Laurhal fled after being conquered by Zenoira and is now gathering an army to counterattack.
el tolinde	Rosalind’s twin sister, Turenus of Elheim, surrendered to Zenoella and led her country out of slavery.
Isilion	A swordsman and knight who served Elheim and led a guerrilla force against Zenoila.
Unifi	A skilled archer of the Frostflower Rebellion. She was born to a human but raised by her adoptive mother Ramona. She played an important role in the fight against Zenoila.
Ramona	The leader of the Frostflower Tribe and the adopted mother of Unife. She is of owl bloodline and is respected by all beast races.
Morad	A lion-like warrior from the Frostblooms, renowned for his strength. A key figure in the fight against Zenoira.
Dinah	A fox-like creature who commands a unit of Snowpetals. Has a bad temper, but cares deeply about her troops.
Nigel	Master of the Knights of the Sacred Heart. Became captain after defending Albion against Zenoila’s attack.
Sanio	An angelic figure who leads the Celestial Knights and serves as a winged knight. He was recognized for his leadership potential at an early age.
Alsina	A witch loyal to Zenoila’s army, she once served the royal family of Cornia. She swore allegiance to Galerius, but she has ulterior motives.
Bartello	A skinny wizard who served Galerius, skilled in dark spells and curses. His face remains blurred.
Ergo	Zenoila, Supreme Commander of the Northern Army, is identified by his ancient armor. Rumor has it that no one has ever seen his face and survived.

guard	A class with extremely strong physical attack power, capable of breaking the opponent’s armor. A follow-up attack can be performed after the battle.
Gladiator	A tough class with high health. Can chop down enemies with a great axe and prevent stamina loss by self-healing.
crossbowman	A profession that wields a crossbow and deals high physical damage. It has anti-flying skills, follow-up attacks, and the ability to heal allies.
priest	Good at healing skills, but not very powerful at attacking. Good at using healing skills to increase the survival rate of teammates.
Dragon Rider	Flying in the air, good at both offense and defense. High evasion rate against ground attacks, with anti-cavalry skills. Afraid of arrows.
Shaman	Designed specifically to weaken enemies, hinder their movements and reduce their abilities. Curses can instill fear in opponents.
Elf Fencer	A magical elf swordsman whose attacks are filled with magical power. Can create a barrier to protect allies.
Werewolf	A wolf warrior who excels at attacking weak enemies. Possesses skills that enhance nighttime capabilities.
Feather Bow	Angel Archer has excellent agility. Possesses the skill of hindering the enemy and has a high evasion rate. Not good at bows and arrows and true shooting.
Griffin Rider	Flying type, with excellent evasion and magic defense. Effective against cavalry, can attack the back row directly. Afraid of arrows.
Feather Sword	Flying swordsman class, agile. Avoid melee attacks and attack the back row directly. Vulnerable to arrows.
hunter	A high-precision bow wielder. Possesses anti-flying skills, precision strikes, and accurate aiming. Very effective against Griffin Riders. Afraid of arrows.

Unicorn Overlord Gameplay

In the game Unicorn Overlord, players will play as the exiled prince Alan, leading an army of soldiers across the charming kingdom of Fevrith. Gameplay includes exploration, where players guide Alan through the world, visit towns, interact with services such as blacksmiths and merchants to equip their army, and participate in story-driven and optional combat.

The world is filled with spirits representing enemies, and players can roam freely, deciding the order in which to deal with events. In addition, towns offer side quests and events to collect materials, allowing Alan to strengthen his relationships with other characters.

Combat in Unicorn Overlord unfolds in real time, with players being able to move around a vast battlefield and being triggered by encounters. Players can pause during combat to strategize and inspect their units. Teams consist of up to six characters with specific classes, each of which affects their abilities on a grid-based battlefield. The game introduces a resource called Valor, which is earned by completing battles and determines the number of units that can be deployed.

Various character classes have different attack ranges and skills, adding depth to the strategic aspect of the game. Combat proceeds automatically based on character attributes and the actions set by the player, with the result being victory or defeat. “Unicorn Overlord” offers players three difficulty options and even an online multiplayer arena that unlocks after a certain point in the story for more challenges.
