True Detective Development
Before True Detective became a television series, its creator, Nic Pizzolatto, was a literature professor and author. He published a short story collection called Between Here and the Yellow Sea in 2006 and a novel called Galveston in 2010. Pizzolatto wanted to adapt Galveston into a television series but decided that True Detective was better suited for television.
Pizzolatto pitched the idea for True Detective to TV executives and eventually struck a deal with HBO in May 2010. He wrote six scripts, including the pilot, mostly on his own, and HBO commissioned an eight-episode first season, which aired in 2014.
True Detective was designed as an anthology series, meaning each season will feature different storylines and characters. This provides creative freedom and attracts well-known actors.
The critically acclaimed first season, set in Louisiana and starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, has continued with new crime stories in different settings and casts.
The fourth season, titled True Detective: Night Country, saw writer-director Issa López aim to create a darker, female-centric story set in Alaska. The season, starring Jodie Foster and Kali Reis, marked the end of Pizzolatto’s role as writer and showrunner.
