Rom-coms have a rightful place in the discussion of great comedy movies, but they can also be great fodder for parody as well. They Came Together takes a look at ’90s rom-coms and gives its own hilarious take on the tropes of the genre. Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler star as two business rivals who find themselves gradually turning from enemies to lovers as typically happens in these stories. However, their romance is constantly put in jeopardy by one ridiculous obstacle after another.

They Came Together is so finely tuned into the rom-com style that viewers might miss some of the more subtle jokes. However, there are also some wonderful outlandish scenes, such as Rudd getting stuck in a loop with the phrase “You can say that again.” Rudd delivers one of his best comedic performances, while Poehler is perfect as the plucky lead. They are backed by an incredible supporting cast and some great cameos.

While there are endless animated movies that make for great comedies, Sausage Party is one of the few that makes for a great R-rated comedy. Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg bring their signature vulgar sense of humor to a Pixar-like concept in the story centered around the anthropomorphic food at a typical grocery store. However, the movie takes a wild turn when the food learns the horrible truth about what happens to them when they are chosen to leave the store.

Rogen and Goldberg bring along many of their usual funny friends to voice various characters, including Jonah Hill and Michael Cera, along with some Oscar nominees, like Salma Hayek and Edward Norton. The movie isn’t simply content to have a story about food using swear words, as Sausage Party also becomes a surprisingly clever commentary of religion and prejudice, all leading to a climax that embraces the R-rating wholeheartedly.

Robin Hood: Men in Tights is a comedic reimagining of the classic Robin Hood legend, directed by Mel Brooks. Cary Elwes stars as Robin Hood, leading a group of merry men in a fight against the tyrannical Prince John and the Sheriff of Rottingham. This parody film combines humor and satire, featuring memorable performances and musical numbers that poke fun at the genre and various pop culture elements.

There have been many Robin Hood movies over the years, but none deliver the laughs like Robin Hood: Men in Tights. From comedy legend Mel Brooks, the comedy stars Cary Elwes as Robin Hood in this takedown of the folk hero legends and, specifically, the Kevin Costner version of the story, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.

As with many of Brooks’ parodies, there is little story worth noting as it is simply a vessel for the endless wacky jokes and one-liners. However, that is not a bad thing as the movie delivers jokes at such a fast rate that audiences will be laughing from beginning to end. While the movie was initially seen as a lesser Brooks movie upon its release, it has found more of a following in recent years as a genuinely hilarious swashbuckling adventure.

While Scream was a genre-bending horror movie that was a satire of the teen slasher genre itself, Scary Movie took that idea and went further with it, creating a full-blown spoof movie with the Wayans family at the helm. Scary Movie largely draws inspiration from the Scream movies but pokes fun at I Know What You Did Last Summer as well in this story of a group of teens who find themselves targeted by a masked killer.

The Scary Movie franchise overstayed its welcome in the eyes of many fans, but this first movie still delivers big laughs even if it is parodying movies that came out decades ago and filled with pop culture references far in the past. A lot of its timelessness comes from the performances, with Anna Faris, Regina Hall, and Marlon Wayans as the standout cast members.

One of the hardest things to pull off in the comedy genre is the blending of comedy and horror. While Tucker and Dale vs. Evil certainly leans more into the comedy, it is also a clever subversion of many horror tropes. Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine play two friends living in a rural community who escape to their remote cabin in the woods where a bunch of teens are camping nearby. Through a series of misunderstandings, the teens mistake these two friendly men as deranged redneck killers.

While the movie might sound like a one-note joke, it becomes a hilarious and bloody bit of comedic mayhem as the teens attempt to stop the supposed killers, only for each one of them to suffer some grisly accident. Tudyk and Labine really sell the movie with their lovable performances as these two men who just wanted to relax. It is a wonderful play on horror staples like Wrong Turn and Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

10/10 Friday RComedyDrama

Friday is a 1995 comedy film directed by F. Gary Gray and written by Ice Cube and DJ Pooh. Starring Ice Cube as Craig Jones and Chris Tucker as his friend Smokey, the story unfolds over one day in their South Central Los Angeles neighborhood. Dealing with the mundane and the unexpected, the film provides a humorous yet insightful look into the lives and challenges of the characters, capturing urban life and culture.

Director F. Gary Gray Release Date April 26, 1995 Cast Ice Cube , Chris Tucker , Nia Long , Tom Lister Jr. , John Witherspoon , Anna Maria Horsford , Regina King , Paula Jai Parker Runtime 91 Minutes

The “hangout movie” is an underrated comedy subgenre, as the audience simply gets to spend time with some great characters, sharing the laughs and wacky situations they get into. Friday is the quintessential hangout movie with its story unfolding over the course of a single lazy day at the end of the week. Ice Cube and Chris Tucker star as two best friends who spend the day smoking weed on the porch, avoiding the dangers of their neighborhood, and trying to meet women.

Like the best hangout movies, Friday is endlessly rewatchable, and simply feels like spending time with some old friends. There is an energy and spark to the movie from director F. Gary Gray, but it is Tucker’s breakout role that many people rightly remember best about Friday. He adds something special with his big and hilarious performance every time he is on-screen.

Moonstruck is a brilliant example of how the perfect actors paired with an exceptional script can elevate the comedy genre and create a true classic. Cher delivers her best performance as an actor in this hilarious and smart romantic comedy in which she plays Loretta, a widower who agrees to marry a kind but dull man, only to fall for his estranged and troubled brother, Ronny (Nicolas Cage).

Cher won the Oscar for her fiery and hugely entertaining performance that shows the wide range of her talents. The movie also served as a major breakout role for Cage, bringing his signature oddball quality to a more mainstream role, with his performance making Moonstruck even more special. It is a hilarious and surprisingly sweet story of troubled people finding each other that is a madcap comedy with a lot of heart.

There is something about sports stories that lend themselves well to comedy elements, as is showcased in the outrageous comedy Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story. Vince Vaughn stars as Peter, the lazy owner of a struggling gym that is in danger of being bought by an arrogant fitness mogul, White Goodman (Ben Stiller). However, Peter and his ragtag group of loyal gym patrons discover they can raise the necessary money by winning a dodgeball tournament, with Goodman determined to stop them.

Dodgeball excels because it is the kind of movie that understands how funny it is to see a grown adult getting hit with a dodgeball. The cast of comedic actors plays into the silliness of the movie, with Stiller especially funny as the villain. Rip Torn also steals the show as the cranky coach of the underdogs, hurling wrenches at the players with the reasoning, “If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball.

Four Lions (2010) Director Release Date Cast Rating Runtime

It could be argued that some of the best comedies of all time have challenged audiences to find humor in the most unexpected of subjects. That is certainly true of the bold and hilarious Four Lions. The British independent movie stars Riz Ahmed and What We Do in the Shadows cast member Kayvan Novak as two Muslim men with the dream of becoming terrorist jihadists who will carry out an attack on Britain.

Again, it is subject matter that seems the antithesis of comedy, but Four Lions is all the more impressive for finding ways to make it hilarious. Like The Dictator did with Adolf Hitler, Four Lions uses comedy to take power away from those who threaten the world with violence. It is a smart satire that is also thought-provoking while never losing touch with its comedic nature.

Her most recent choice has been narrowed down to the talented but inconsistent hotshot (Tim Robbins) and the veteran on his way out in the sport (Kevin Costner).

The trio of actors brings these characters to life, with Robbins playing the goofball character quite well, as Costner and Sarandon have electrifying chemistry. Before cementing himself with tough guy roles, Costner proves himself a great comedic talent, sharing funny banter with Robbins as he enjoys making a fool out of the arrogant and inexperienced younger player.
