Robbie Amell’s 10 Best Movies And TV Shows

The best Robbie Amell movies and TV shows feature several releases with his more successful cousin, Stephen Amell, but he has also featured in some of his own headlining productions. While Stephen Amell has eclipsed his cousin’s career, it might be a surprise to know that Robbie Amell had been acting a full decade before his cousin. Stephen is seven years older, but Robbie got his start as a child star, working in theatrical productions. His first movie came in 2005’s Cheaper by the Dozen 2.

However, Robbie’s biggest success came on television, and part of it was thanks to his cousin’s successful career in the Arrowverse on The CW. While Stephen Amell was the lead on Arrow, Robbie Amell got a supporting role on the spin-off series The Flash as Ronnie Raymond, one-half of the superhero Firestorm. That wasn’t his first TV show lead role (that was The Tomorrow People) or his last (he currently stars in Upload). He also has several good movies, including a franchise with Stephen Amell called Code 8.

Robbie Amell’s early career was full of one or two-episode guest-starring stints on popular TV shows, and How I Met Your Mother was one of his best. The 2000s sitcom takes place largely in flashback as Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) tells his teenage kids the hilariously complicated story of how he met and fell for their mother.

With romance and dating serving as the beating heart of the show, most of How I Met Your Mother‘s guest stars play love interests of the main characters, and Amell’s Nate “Scooby” Scooberman is no exception. A fellow Canadian, Scooby dates Robin (Cobie Smulders) for two episodes in season 6. The main joke is that Scooby is essentially the human version of a dog, licking Robin’s face when he kisses her and peeing on a fire hydrant. With his many credits, Amell doesn’t often get to flex his comedy muscles, making How I Met Your Mother a fun standout in his filmography.

The first television show that Robbie Amell had a lead role in was The Tomorrow People on The CW. Amell had seven years of television experience by this time, and it was a chance to see if he could lead the way for his own show. The series was a science fiction drama, a remake of the British television series of the same name. The plot sees a group of young people who have psionic powers thanks to human evolution and is easily influenced by the mutants in the Marvel Universe, including using the term “Homo superior.”

Amell is the lead, Stephen Jameson, someone who discovers his powers as a second-generation Homo superior and joins the Tomorrow People, but then becomes a double-agent when he also joins the villain team Ultra to try to help bring them down. There were 22 episodes in the first season and The CW ended up canceling the series. Despite it only lasting for one season, it did end up with a nomination at the Saturn Awards for Best Youth-Oriented Series on Television.

One of Robbie Amell’s early movie successes as an adult came with the 2015 comedy The DUFF. The movie has a complicated plot, as DUFF stands for “Designated Ugly Fat Friend,” making it seem judgmental and problematic, though the idea is that the term really just means a less popular friend. Mae Whitman stars as Bianca, the DUFF whom people often try to use to get to her more popular friends. One of these friends is Robbie Amell’s Wesley.

Wesley is a popular football player (and Bianca’s childhood friend) who is dating the school’s most popular girl (Bella Thorne’s Madison), a young woman who constantly bullies Bianca. Amell is great in his role as Wesley, someone who often does and says the wrong things, but ends up improving himself as the film goes on, becoming a much better person by the conclusion. Bella Thorne won a Teen Choice Award for The DUFF and both Amell and Whitman also received nominations.

While Code 8 was a fun genre movie, it wasn’t a massive success. That is why it ended up as a surprise to learn that it received a sequel five years later. The movie has Robbie Amell and his cousin Stephen returning to the sci-fi world full of super-powered beings. In this sequel, which Netflix produced, things were bigger with a raised budget thanks to the streaming giant. It continues the story, with Connor (Robbie) and Garrett (Stephen) now on opposite sides thanks to their different moral values.

Five years after the first movie’s climax, Connor ends up released from prison and wants to go straight. Garett now runs his “ethical” drug empire. The two end up crossing paths when the corrupt law enforcement stages a murder to look like an overdose, and they have to find a way to reveal the truth before the police can eliminate them as well. Things were bigger and the higher budget shone through, although it meant more action and less story. The film also hints at more to come in the franchise.

While he wasn’t a major character in the series, Robbie Amell had an important role in the Netflix adaptation of A Series of Unfortunate Events. In this series, based on the children’s books of the same name, Neil Patrick Harris stars as Count Olaf, a man who sets up an elaborate scheme to steal the Baudelaire fortune for himself. Robbie Amell shows up in the second and third seasons of the show as the ambidextrous Kevin. He plays mostly for comic relief, with the joke of his use of both hands equally being “freakish.”

This is a trait of the series, the books, and even the movie, making normal things seem bizarre and strange, and using it all for unexpected comic effect. He only appeared in three episodes, but as part of the Caligari Carnival, using his non-freakish talent to astonish people, Amell was brilliantly funny in a low-key manner. The second season was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Children’s Program.

He is also a very loyal warrior, but to his people first and foremost, to the extent that he openly questions Francesca’s leadership skills. The Witcher tells the story of Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill), a monster hunter who sets out to protect the crown princess Ciri.

Code 8 was initially a short film that Robbie Amell and Stephen Amell starred in together in 2016. They enjoyed the story so much that they wanted to make it as a feature-length movie without studio interference and started an Indiegogo campaign to raise $200,000 to shoot it on a low budget. However, they ended up raising over $2.5 million and had more than enough to make something that could get out for people to see. This was an original superhero movie in an era of MCU and DCU projects.

When the public learns that superheroes exist, they are forced to register their abilities but are soon marginalized by the public. When a crime syndicate starts to sell Psyuke, an addictive drug made from the spinal fluid of trafficked Powers, the police start to use drones to hunt down anyone with powers. Connor (Robbie Amell) is an electrokinetic, and he soon agrees to help Garrett (Stephen Amell), a telekinetic, to commit crimes to help his mother. The film ended up being purchased by Netflix and created a franchise.

Robbie Amell is the jock of the cult and is at turns evil, seeking to kill Cole for the ritual, and helpful, such as when he tells Cole he needs to stand up for himself. Amell is also great here with his physical comedy, as he ends up dying, but not until after he walks into some of Cole’s Home Alone-inspired traps. Despite his death here, Amell returns as Max in the sequel, The Babysitter: Killer Queen, along with the rest of his allies and new cult members trying to get revenge on Cole.

Likely the role that most people know Robbie Amell for came in the Arrowverse on The CW. Amell was part of the cast of The Flash, where he stars as one-half of the superhero known as Firestorm. This hero is a combination of two people — scientist Martin Stein (Victor Garber) and engineer Ronnie Raymond (Amell) — who were combined after the particle accelerator explosion merged them together. Sadly, his time in the Arrowverse was short-lived as he ended up dying to save Stein’s life.

Firestorm continued on, with a new character, Jefferson Jackson, merging with Stein to continue as a hero in The Flash and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. However, Amell returned later as Deathstorm in The Flash‘s eighth season, a being created after Ronnie’s sacrifice who was a murderous villain that used negative cold fusion energy to feed off people’s grief. It was a great turn, with Robbie Amell playing both a hero and a villain in the series, and impressing in both roles.
