Return to Movie Ending Explained
The film’s closing statement reveals the historical context of the events depicted. It acknowledged that during the Satanic Panic of the 1980s, there was a wave of fears and accusations of ritual abuse perpetrated by organized Satanic cults. However, as time passed and the investigation unfolded, there was no conclusive evidence to substantiate these claims.

The statement highlights the waning hysteria of satanic abuse, showing that public awareness and understanding grows over time. It highlighted that many cases similar to those depicted in the film were reported during that period, creating an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty. However, it is clear that these accusations lack the necessary evidence to support the existence of widespread ritual abuse by organized Satanic cults.
By drawing attention to this historical context, the film aims to provide a critical perspective on the events depicted and ultimately lead to the realization that the accusations are largely unfounded. It encourages reflection on the social impact of moral panics and serves as a reminder of the importance of evidence-based conclusions when assessing controversial and sensitive topics.

“The Return” is a gripping psychological thriller set in 1990s Minnesota. The story revolves around detective Bruce Kenner, played by Ethan Hawke, who becomes involved in a complicated case that tests the limits of his sanity and morality.

While investigating a disturbing crime, Detective Kenner meets John Gray (David Dancik), who shockingly admits to sexually assaulting his daughter, Angela Gray (Elizabeth). Played by Ma Watson). However, John claims to have no memory of committing these heinous acts. Determined to uncover the truth, Kenna seeks the help of Professor Kenneth Raines (played by David Thewlis), who specializes in memory recovery therapy.
As the investigation progresses, Kenner and Raines begin to suspect that their colleague, Detective George Nesbitt played by Aaron Ashmore, may be involved in the case. Although Nesbitt was detained, they were unable to find conclusive evidence against Nesbitt. To complicate matters further, Angela’s testimony hinted at the involvement of a satanic cult. She claimed she was the victim of masked men who took disturbing photos during the abuse.
To uncover the Gray family’s dark secrets, Kenna and Raines track down Angela’s estranged brother, Roy Gray (played by Devon Bostic). Through a return to technology, Roy recalls a traumatic memory from his childhood of a hooded figure entering his room. This revelation leads Kenna and Raines to suspect that Roy’s grandmother Rose Gray (played by Dale Dickey) may be involved. However, their search of Rose’s home was fruitless.
Meanwhile, Kenner’s own sanity is tested as he begins to experience nightmares filled with sinister Satanic rituals. Fearing for her life, Angela confided in Kenna, revealing that the cult was targeting her because she claimed to have the demonic mark. She also shared her mother’s chilling encounters with strange characters and mysterious phone calls before her tragic accident.
