Rabindranath Tagore: Early Life and Childhood
He was born on May 7, 1861 in Jorasanko mansion to Debendranath Tagore and Sarada Devi, a member of the Tagore family Ancestral home in Kolkata. He is the youngest among his siblings. He lost his mother when he was very young, and his father was a traveler, so he was raised mainly by servants and maids. He became involved in the Bengal Renaissance at a very early age and his family was also actively involved in it. At the age of 8, he began to write poetry, and at the age of 16, he also began to create artistic works and began publishing poetry under the pen name Bhanusimha. In 1877, he wrote the short story “Bhikharini” and in 1882 he wrote the collection of poems “Sandhya Sangit”.
Influenced by the classical poetry of Kalidasa, he began to compose his own classical poetry. His sister Swarnakumari is a famous novelist. In 1873, he traveled with his father for several months and gained knowledge in several subjects. While he remained in Amritsar, he studied Sikhism and wrote about six poems and many articles on the religion.

His traditional education began in a public school in Brighton, East Sussex, England. In 1878, in order to fulfill his father’s last wish, he went to England to become a barrister. He was not very interested in school studies and later entered University College London to study law, but he gave up this major and taught himself various works of Shakespeare. He also studied the best of English, Irish and Scottish literature and music. He returned to India and married Mrinalini Devi.

His father bought a large piece of land for meditation and named it Shantiniketan. Debendranath Tagore founded the ‘ashram’ in 1863. In 1901, Rabindranath Tagore established an open-air school. It is a prayer hall with a marble floor and is named “The Mandir”. It was also named ‘Patha Bhavana’ and started with just five students. Classes here are conducted under trees and follow traditional Guru-Shishya teaching methods. This teaching trend revives ancient teaching methods, which prove to be beneficial compared to modern methods. Unfortunately, his wife and two children died and he was left alone. He was very uneasy at that time. At the same time, his work began to grow and became increasingly popular among Bangladeshi and foreign readers. In 1913, he gained recognition and was awarded the prestigious Nobel Prize in Literature, becoming the first Asian Nobel Prize winner. Shantiniketan is now a famous university town in West Bengal.
