Priyanka Chopra Jonas’ 10 Best Movies And TV Shows

Priyanka Chopra Jonas

is likely known among pop culture enthusiasts for marrying Nick Jonas, but she is also an accomplished singer and actress with her best movies and TV shows being made in both India and the United States. When she was crowned Miss India, and then Miss World, in 2000, movie offers began to come her way, and the pageants opened the door to her to the world of acting in a variety of projects.

In India, Jonas has appeared in everything from dramas to comedies to more traditional Bollywood fare with musical sequences. She made headlines as the first Bollywood actress to cross over into American television when she landed the lead role in the ABC spy drama Quantico. Since then, she’s taken on a lot more projects in American movies and television. Jonas has amassed more than 70 roles since she began acting in 2000, but these are some of her best.

Love Again is one of Jonas’ most recent movies. While some will argue that it does not deserve to be among her best, the movie is able to showcase Jonas’ dramatic abilities in a romance very well. In every movie that she appears in, Jonas attempts to play a new kind of character, and she largely succeeds, disappearing into roles as a great character actor. Love Again allows her to do that too, even if critics found the movie too predictable.

Here, Jonas is a woman grieving the loss of her boyfriend. Her grief stops her from living her life as she moves back in with her parents and finds it difficult to continue writing children’s books. Sam Heughan is a man who was dumped just a week before his wedding, and he is having a hard time in his career as well. His next assignment is to profile Celine Dion but with heart instead of cynicism. The two cross paths because of text messages on his work phone meant for someone else, and they both begin to love again.

The movie is very predictable, but the performances are what allows the audience to forgive that. Jonas and Hueghan have a great chemistry that allows the audience to believe they really are learning to love again while still processing their anger and grief.

Jonas’ role in the fourth movie of the Matrix franchise is a relatively small one compared to other actors who have been involved in the franchise. Most of the people going into Matrix Resurrections were those who were fans of the original movies and were looking to see what happened next in this universe.

Though Matrix Revolutions was released in 2003, the next movie is set 60 years after the events of Revolutions. It sees Neo (Keanu Reeves) living an ordinary life as a game developer who has trouble distinguishing dreams from reality when a group of rebels frees him from a new version of the Matrix.

Jonas appears in the movie as a recast. Sati was originally portrayed by Tanveer K. Atwal in The Matrix Revolutions. Atwal has not appeared on screen, however, since 2006. With Jonas taking over the role, she plays Sati as friendly and determined and picks up the part flawlessly as an older version of the exiled program in human form.

Isn’t It Romantic might not be the most critically lauded of Jonas’ projects, but it is still one of her best. The movie satirizes romantic comedies while also embracing how comforting they can be.

Isn’t It Romantic follows Natalie (Rebel Wilson), a woman working in an architecture firm whose ideas are often overlooked. While her assistant (Betty Gilpin) loves rom-coms, she despises them. After hitting her head while being mugged, she finds herself in the middle of a rom-com with a handsome client (Liam Hemsworth) becoming her love interest, her best friend at work (Adam Devine) falling for a “yoga ambassador” (Jonas), and her entire world gets turned upside down.

Chopra’s Isabella Stone is a satire of the type of female character who is often presented as competition for the protagonist. She is perfect – beautiful, intelligent, a singer, and with an unconventional job – but she is also a little condescending, subtly insulting those around her while seemingly complimenting them. Jonas is fantastic in the role, being both charming and magnetic while still making her performance just subtle enough to not seem like it went too far into caricature territory.

In addition to Bollywood and American movies, Jonas has also appeared in several television shows, though she has only had main roles in a few. Two of those shows mark some of her best work on camera, and part of that is likely because the shows allowed her to really dig into her roles for a longer period of time.

Citadel is a newer series for Jonas, made for Amazon’s Prime Video. It’s a spy thriller of a show. The series takes on the idea of former spies living normal lives and gives them a new twist – their memories being wiped ensures that they do not remember their lives as secret agents. The concept allows many of the actors to play at least two different characters. Jonas plays one of those agents who is called back into work.

Citadel is not one of the most critically lauded works of Jonas’, but it is one of the most popular. The series is fun instead of one of the heavier dramas fans might have otherwise seen her in during recent years, It also allows her to have a larger action role, delving back into that world again after taking a break from it.

Italian and Indian spin-off series premiered in 2024. More non-English language spin-offs are in development.

The Sky Is Pink (2019)

As Aditi Chaudhary

Close

Though Jonas has significantly decreased the number of Bollywood movies she has appeared in since breaking through to audiences outside of India, she has still continued to make movies when one sparks her interest. The Sky Is Pink is one of those. Inspired by true events, the movie tells the story of Aisha Chaudhary, a teenage girl with severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) who became a writer and inspirational speaker before her young death.

Jonas stars in the movie as the mother of the teenager. Her part in the story involves grieving the potential loss of her daughter while still being supportive of her. She also has to navigate a rocky patch in her marriage as the relationship there becomes strained as well. It’s a lot of stress for one actor to play at once and Jonas navigates it beautifully.

The Sky Is Pink was nominated for three Filmfare Awards in India, including Best Actress for Priyanka Chopra Jonas.

5

Fashion (2008)

As Meghna Mathur

Priyanka Chopra Jonas in Fashion

Some of Jonas’ earlier movies are still among her best, like Fashion. Only eight years into her career, she made the movie Fashion, which, as the title would suggest, is set in the world of Indian fashion.

The movie follows an ensemble cast, including Jonas, and they strive to become supermodels in the Indian fashion industry. Jonas’ Meghna is from a small town and does not have a wealthy background. As she rises to success in her career, she also becomes affected by substance use and abuse and the loss of her own self-confidence.

Fashion is notable because, at the time, there were not a ton of female-centric movies in India of this nature. Few Indian movies allowed audiences to see this darker side of a booming and popular industry either. Fashion was praised for doing both. It also marks a turning point in Jonas’ career as she received many awards from various Indian institutions following the release of the movie.

Fashion was nominated for seven Filmfare Awards in Indiana, winning two, including Best Actress for Priyanka Chopra Jonas.

7 Khoon Maaf (2011)

As Susanna Anna-Marie Johannes

Priyanka Chopra Jonas in 7 Khoon Maaf

She has made a conscious effort to defy expectations by playing as many different character types as possible…

Early in her career, Jonas was often cast as the love interest in Bollywood movies. She gradually expanded to play more than the good girl or the girl next door type in Bollywood movies to also appear as femme fatales, action heroes, and athletes. She has made a conscious effort to defy expectations by playing as many different character types as possible, and she does that in 7 Khoon Maaf by essentially playing a black widow.

7 Khoon Maaf is an adaptation of the short story “Susanna’s Seven Husbands.” It follows Susanna as she searches for love, marrying multiple times in an attempt to find it. As she does, however, she finds flaws in each of her husbands that she cannot abide, and she murders each of them. The movie allows her husbands to symbolize different sins (the first envy, the second gluttony, and so on), making it easy to understand why Susanna would not want to remain married to the different men.

Though the story sounds like it would make for an intense drama, 7 Khoon Maaf is a black comedy instead. Critics praised Jonas’ work in the movie, many agreeing that no one one else could have taken on the role. India’s Daily News and Analysis in particular said:

Priyanka Chopra takes on a character that most of her contemporaries would shy away from and enacts it in a way that only she possibly can. For a woman with as many shades as Susanna, Chopra gets a crack at a role of a lifetime.

7 Khoon Maaf was nominated for four Filmfare Awards, winning one.

3

Mary Kom (2014)

As Mangte Chungneijang Kom AKA Mary Kom

Priyanka Chopra Jonas in Mary Kom

One of the biggest roles of Jonas’ career is in the movie Mary Kom. There, she plays the titular character. The story is inspired by the real life and career of the Indian boxer known as Mary Kom, who was encouraged to change her name by her coach at a young age.

Kom is interested in boxing from a young age despite others thinking it is not an appropriate sport for young women. The movie allows the audience to follow her training, her marriage, her temporary retirement from the sport to start a family, and her comeback. Jonas trained for many months before filming began to learn Kom’s fighting style and to get in the physical shape of a boxer. So, not only was she able to pull off the more dramatic moments of the movie, but she was able to convincingly portray the boxer as well.

The movie is one of the most critically lauded of her career in India. It was nominated for three Filmfare Awards and named Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment by the National Film Awards in India. There was initially some controversy surrounding the casting of Jonas in the role, however, since she did not physically resemble the real woman being portrayed. Critics and fans alike were outspoken in India, questioning why a woman from North Eastern India would not have been cast instead, allowing a lesser-known actor the chance to shine.

Jonas, however, was approached about starring in the film because she was a known box office draw in India by 2014. Director Omung Kumar revealed to Filmfare that Jonas was his only choice for the role because he believed she could pull off the role and draw people in to see Mary Kom’s story, who by then was not as well known. Though Jonas put her all into the movie and was proud of her work at the time, by 2022, she did agree in interviews that the role should have gone to a different actor (via Vanity Fair).

Barfi! (2012)

As Jhilmil Chatterjee

Jhilmil waiting for Barfi in Barfi

Barfi! was nominated at almost every major award ceremony in the entertainment industry in India following its release.

Barfi! is widely regarded as Jonas’ best movie out of India. While it is a dramedy, and still a story told in the Bollywood style, the movie was a risk for its time as it depicted main characters who were not neurotypical.

The movie follows the titular Barfi who is both deaf and mute. It tracks his relationships with two women – one he has known since childhood and another he falls for later. It features a nonlinear story but spans from 1972 to 2012, giving the audience a complete picture of those relationships.

While the movie is a story of a love triangle in a lot of ways, it is also a great character-driven story as well. All three of the main characters are given stories to tell, and all three actors received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike.

Barfi! was nominated at almost every major award ceremony in the entertainment industry in India following its release. It was nominated for 13 Filmfare Awards, winning seven. It was also nominated for 23 Screen Awards, winning nine. It was also India’s official selection to be submitted to be considered for Best Foreign Film at the Academy Awards.

Quantico marked the first time a Bollywood actor was the lead of an American network show. The show was ambitious as it was a spy thriller with soapy romance and dual timelines. The combination worked in the show’s favor though.

Quantico follows a recruit in the FBI during her training in the past and her time on the run in the present as she is the prime suspect in a deadly bombing. Jonas plays that recruit. The first two seasons of the show play with that duel timeline, which means most of the main cast is able to play two very different sides of their characters, including Jonas.

The show was developed by Joshua Safran, who was better known for shows like Gossip Girl at the time. Though Jonas had a development deal with ABC at the time and chose the pilot script of Quantico as the project she was most interested in, she had to audition for the role of Alex. It was the first time she had to audition for a role after being offered her pick of scripts in India. According to Safran (via Forbes), he knew she would be Alex from the moment she walked into the room to audition:

She walked into the room, and it was like the molecules shifted in that way that superstars have. I was very confused because I didn’t know who she was, but we all sat up straighter. We’re like, this is clearly a movie star; it’s like every hair on the back of your neck stands up watching her act. When I went back home I couldn’t think about anyone else.

The character was originally written as a white woman, but she was completely rewritten to an Indian-American who had spent time living in Mumbai to accommodate Jonas’ background. Many critics named her the breakout star of the show. The show earned Priyanka Chopra Jonas back-to-back People’s Choice Awards as well, making her the first Southeast Asian actor to win Favorite Dramatic TV Actress.
