How to play Pokémon Unite
Pokémon Unite is an action-packed multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game where two teams of five players compete in standard matches. The goal is to accumulate the highest total score within the 10-minute match time, with the team with the highest score at the end of the match winning. In the event of a tie, the team that reaches the final score first is declared the winner.
The game introduces unique features such as limited-time events with special rules and a Quick Battle mode, offering shorter 5-minute matches for 3-4 players per team on smaller maps with modified rules.
Players start out controlling relatively weak Pokémon, and over the course of the match, they can strengthen their Pokémon by capturing wild Pokémon, assisting in defeating Pokémon captured by teammates, scoring points, and knocking out opponent Pokémon. Unlike traditional Pokémon games, Pokémon Unite does not use a “type” system, but instead introduces “union moves”, special moves unique to each Pokémon that are unlocked at certain levels.
The game features over 50 playable Pokémon, each with their own strengths and strategies. What makes Pokémon League stand out compared to other MOBA games is that there is no scoreboard in the game to prevent players from leaving out of frustration, but instead score updates are provided through timely announcements during matches.
For example, announcements like “We’re ahead by a large margin!” or “We’re really struggling!” indicate the current score status, adding to the suspense and excitement of the game.

The Story of Pokémon Unite
Pokémon Unite is the latest in a series of free-to-play Pokémon games from The Pokemon Company that focuses on online competitive play. While the game contains a lighthearted storyline, the main setting is the island of Aeos, where Professor Phorus and Researcher Erbie are studying Aeos Energy, a unique type of energy that is relevant to Unite Battles.
In the game, the goal of the Pokémon Trainer is to collect Aeos Energy using a specialized Unity Ball. The collected energy is then incorporated into the gameplay, with the Trainer and their Pokémon working to gain energy points in the opponent’s goal zone. The story does not explicitly delve into how this energy is used or its specific purpose, but it plays a vital role in the game’s dynamics.
The concept involves a strategic and competitive approach that transforms the traditional Pokémon experience into a team-based online battle format. As Trainers navigate the island of Aeos, they engage in battles, using their Pokémon to score points by successfully harnessing Aeos Energy in their opponent’s goal zone. While the storyline may not extensively explore the complexities of this energy, its importance is highlighted as an integral element that adds depth and excitement to the Pokémon Unite gaming experience.
Pokémon Unite Battle Basics
In Pokémon Unite, each battle consists of two teams of five players, and the map is divided into the top lane, the bottom lane, and the middle lane, known as the “jungle”, where wild Pokémon roam. The goal is to gain Aeos energy by defeating wild Pokémon and opponents, and deposit these energies into the enemy’s target area to gain points. The team with the highest score at the end wins, and the game can last up to 10 minutes. The losing team can choose to surrender.
In order to develop an effective team strategy, it is recommended to select a variety of Pokémon types to play different roles. This includes fast Pokémon for jungle play, support Pokémon for control or healing, defensive Pokémon (tank Pokémon) for recovery, attacker Pokémon for dealing heavy damage, and all-around Pokémon for flexibility in starting and maintaining battles.
Pokémon Unite divides these characters into “battle types,” with Pikachu, Venusaur, and Alola Ninetales being attackers, Zeraora, Blazewon, and Gengar being speed-types, Charizard, Lucario, and Strength-types being all-arounders, Snorlax, Craster, and Slowpoke being defenders, and Eldergus, Mr. Golem, and Jigglypuff being supports.
During matches, players will need to play to their Pokémon’s strengths, strategically store energy in target areas, and work as a team. Target areas may be destroyed if they are not defended, but even if all target areas are destroyed, players can still win by defeating Legendary Pokémon, doubling the points submitted during their buffs. Strategic play, teamwork, and adapting to a variety of roles are the keys to success in Pokémon Unite.
