Pokémon Go received mixed reviews upon release. While critics praised the innovative concept, they also pointed out technical issues. Despite the criticism, the game quickly became one of the most popular and profitable mobile apps of 2016, with over 500 million downloads worldwide by the end of the year.
It is credited with popularizing location-based technology and AR technology, encouraging physical activity as players explore their surroundings in search of Pokémon, and boosting local businesses by increasing foot traffic.
However, the game has also faced controversy. Reports of accidents and public nuisances related to player distractions have raised concerns. Some governments have expressed safety concerns, leading to regulations on their use.
Despite the controversy, Pokémon Go had more than 147 million monthly active users as of May 2018 and had been downloaded more than 1 billion times worldwide by early 2019. The game has been a huge financial success, with total revenue exceeding $6 billion in 2020.
