Patricia Arquette’s 10 Best Movies And TV Shows

Patricia Arquette
grew up with a family who were all interested in the arts so it is no surprise that there are many Arquettes in show business and that Patricia Arquette’s best movies and TV shows prove to be an eclectic bunch. Arquette has been acting professionally since she made her debut in the 1987 movie A Nightmare On Elm Street: Dream Warriors. She became a huge part of an iconic horror franchise and has not slowed down since.

In recent years, she has become known just as much for television as she has for her work in movies, starring in several shows, some of which have had a limited run, for different streaming networks. She has also been heavily involved in making documentaries about subjects she is passionate about. Movies, documentaries, and tv shows all make appearances in Arquette’s best projects.

Based on the novel by Louis Sachar, Holes is a Disney movie made when Shia LaBeouf was still working for the company. Disney Channel even aired a music video for a song on the soundtrack sung by the movie’s young cast. Though a Holes TV reboot is on the way, the 2003 movie remains beloved.

Holes follows a young boy (LaBeaouf) who gets in trouble one too many times. When he is falsely accused, he ends up at a detention camp out in the desert. There, the boys that live in the camp are forced to dig holes in the desert, though they do not initially know why. As it turns out, there is a history in the region of an outlaw who might have buried her treasure there.

That outlaw is played in flashbacks by Patricia Arquette. Kissin’ Kate’s story is a complex one for a story initially aimed at tweens in the late 1990s. Kate is a white teacher who falls in love with a black man (Dulé Hill). When they are caught together, he is killed and the schoolhouse is burned down. Kate becomes an outlaw in response to what is done to the man she loves and the trauma she experiences.

Arquette manages to play Kate’s grief but never sacrifices her spirit. Kate is fiery in the movie flashbacks, having fun when she is an outlaw despite the anger she holds.

Medium was initially inspired by the real-life Allison DuBois, a woman who is an alleged medium and claims to have worked with law enforcement agencies on cases. The series does not follow the real woman’s life, but Arquette’s lead character does share her name.

Medium follows Allison as she raises three daughters with her husband and also gets a job working at the District Attorney’s office. When she has a vision that helps to solve a case, she, her husband, and the attorney she works with all realize that she truly does have psychic visions and can communicate with the dead. All three of her daughters eventually inherit her abilities as well.

While the series is a crime procedural, it is also a supernatural family drama. Alongside the case of the week, there are such conflicts as one of the daughters being possessed by a spirit and deciding which parent is going to pursue a different career path. Arquette navigated the genre-bending series beautifully.

Arquette won an Emmy for her work in the series and was nominated for three Golden Globes.

Patricia Arquette has appeared in a lot of documentaries in the last 20+ years. She has no trouble speaking out about causes she is passionate about or lending her time and perspective to topics that other actors might not take the time to pursue. Equal Means Equal is one of the best of the documentaries to feature her.

The documentary, helmed by Kamala Lopez (who is an actor, producer, and director herself), examines the treatment of women in the United States. Not only does it interview women and break down inequalities in the workforce, but it also walks the audience through precedent-setting legal cases and examines the lack of protection for women from harassment and assault because of institutional sexism.

In addition to Arquette, who has long been an advocate for equal pay for men and women in the entertainment industry in addition to other forms of activism, there are also interviews with journalists, law enforcement officers, psychologists, and more. It’s a very thorough approach considering it is only about 90 minutes long.

…one of the most outlandish comedies of Arquette’s career.

This overlooked gem from Arquette’s early years in the industry is a must-see for those used to seeing her tackle dramas. It is one of the funniest movies she has ever been in.

Flirting With Disaster is a dark comedy in which everything that can go wrong will. The comedy of errors sees a man (Ben Stiller) decide that he has to find his birth parents before he is willing to name his new baby. Though he was adopted by a lovely couple as a baby, he wants to understand the truth of his parentage. When a woman (Tea Leoni) working for the adoption agency thinks she has found the correct records, she decides to tag along with him and his wife (Arquette).

The initial search turns into an epic road trip that involves violent truck drivers, government agents, and LSD manufacturing. It is one of the most outlandish comedies of Arquette’s career. She largely plays her role straight while everyone around her is involved in chaos, and that helps to ground the movie.

True Romance is often hailed as one of Quentin Tarantino’s best scripts. He penned the script for the movie before he directed Reservoir Dogs, but sold the script instead of directing it himself. That job went to Tony Scott.

True Romance follows an Elvis Presley fan (Christian Slater) who falls for the call girl (Patricia Arquette) his boss sets him up with for his birthday and the two decide to start their lives over. Not only does he kill her pimp, but they end up on the run from drug dealers and in the middle of a shoot out with the law enforcement officers tracking them.

The movie was not a hit at the box office initially, but critics praised the movie’s style with its gritty violence, rapid-fire dialogue and outstanding performances of the cast. Since it first released in 1993, it has earned a cult following and regularly ends up on the lists of the best movies of the ‘90s.

Though early in her career Arquette was not in a lot of movies inspired by real events, Ed Wood is the rare instance of her appearing in a biographical movie. Her modern work, especially in limited series, has been much more focused on stories inspired by real events.

Ed Wood focuses on the life of Ed Wood during the time when he formed a friendship with Bela Lugosi. It’s also the time in his life when he worked on his most well-known films. The movie, helmed by Tim Burton, was filmed in black and white, which was a surprising decision for the time.

Though the movie did not do as well at the box office as hoped, critics praised Burton’s vision for the project. Many critics appreciated that Burton did not go the satire route for the movie despite Wood being known for exploitation films of the 1950s and having a fondness for women’s clothing. While Arquette’s work was not singled out, the movie did win two Academy Awards and a Golden Globe.

According to a 1994 interview with the Toronto Sun, Arquette got to meet the real O’Hara while working on the movie, calling her “very graceful and very nice.”

Severance is one of the most fascinating dramas in recent years. Made for AppleTV+, the series follows employees of a company who agree to be “severed” when they work on secret projects. That means a device is implanted that removes all traces of their memories outside of work while they are on the basement levels of the company, and when they leave work, it removes all knowledge of their employment projects. It’s a way to keep their personal and professional lives separate, but also a way to keep things confidential.

Adam Scott’s Mark is at the center of the story as it is his character whose two separate lives start to overlap, so he gets the bulk of the interest from audiences. Arquette, however, plays the manager of the basement levels. Her personality outside of work is completely different as Mark’s next-door neighbor.

Part of the interest for actors appearing on Severance has got to be the chance to play two completely different roles. Many of the characters are completely different in their work environment compared to being outside of it, and there are plenty of mysteries to unravel as well. Scott, Arquette, and John Turturro are the actors most often singled out for their impressive work in the series.

Arquette has been nominated for multiple awards for the show, including an Emmy and a Saturn Award.

The Act made waves for Hulu when it premiered. The limited series is inspired by the real events in which Gypsy Rose Blanchard was abused and gaslit into believing she was ill for her entire childhood. Blanchard eventually conspired to kill her mother and went to prison for her mother’s murder. While the series pulls from those real events, it also fictionalizes some aspects of the story, like creating fictional supporting characters for the story.

While Joey King starred as Gypsy Rose Blanchard, Arquette played her mother. Both actors were universally praised for their work in the show. Their commitment to their roles helped to usher in an era of series inspired by true crime stories. Arquette in particular won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for her work on the series.

There was some controversy surrounding the show as Gypsy Rose Blanchard did not believe it was fair that screenwriters could use her story without her permission. Her family also believed that she would be compensated for the show, and she was not (via Marie Claire). Blanchard has since been released from prison and has appeared in docuseries to tell her own story.

…Arquette manages to quietly stand out in the drama.

Much like The Act, Escape At Dannemora is inspired by true events. The seven-episode limited series is inspired by the 2015 Clinton Correctional Facility escape.

The series is framed around the interrogation of Tilly Mitchell, who initially works as the supervisor of the facility’s tailor shop. She is charged with aiding in the escape of two inmates, both convicted murderers. They have already been caught, but the police want her side of the story, which takes the audience back to a time before the escape, revealing her sexual relationship with the inmates and her involvement in their escape.

Performances of the cast were praised, especially that of Arquette who physically transformed for the role, putting on 40 pounds. Comic Book Resources also notes that “Arquette’s performance is even more impressive because Mitchell never does anything exceptional.” Mitchell lives a life defined by routine, but Arquette manages to quietly stand out in the drama.

Arquette won a Critics Choice Award, Screen Actors Guild Award, and a Golden Globe for her work in the series. She was also nominated for an Emmy.

Boyhood marks a fascinating way to make a movie. The movie began filming in 2002 with new scenes filmed each year with the same cast in order to track the main character’s growth in a realistic way. It is the rare movie about growing up that was actually made while the actor grew up over the course of a decade. Boyhood essentially follows a young boy from the ages of 6 to 16 as he grows up with divorced parents.

It’s also an intensely collaborative effort of filmmaking. The general outline for the script, and the ending, was all that the actors initially had. Each year, new scenes would be written with input from the actors about their own life experiences. It allowed the movie to feel even more organic.

Arquette won an Oscar, a Golden Globe, a Critics Choice, a Screen Actors Guild, and a Satellite Award for her work in the movie.

Multiple publications named the movie the best of the year when it hit theaters in 2014. Despite the huge scope of the project, the movie painted an intimate character portrait of a boy and his family, which impressed critics. Many critics also praised Arquette for the realism of her work, noting that it did not feel like she was putting on a particular character. The San Francisco Chronicle likened Arquette’s performance to being “like watching a generation’s hopes and struggles, presented by an actress with a fullness of emotion, and yet with utter matter-of-factness.

Though Patricia Arquette has a long and eclectic career, Boyhood represents her most unique projects and one of her best performances, making it her best movie.
