The technology promises to enable roads to repair themselves with the help of a unique asphalt. The new composite mix will then be infused with asphalt and steel fibers. What’s unique and interesting about this technology is that if a gap appears in the road, the asphalt actually spreads, covering the gap with steel wire to fill the pothole.
Work on the road to self-healing
National Highways Authority of India officials say the technology will actually solve the pothole problem. Potholes on roads cause a large number of deaths and accidents in India. However, it is currently unknown how long it will take asphalt to cover or repair gaps or potholes in the road. This asphalt repair technique actually works by integrating small pieces of steel wool into the composition of the asphalt. This is actually the binder component in asphalt. The heating of the steel fibers is promoted by an induction device during the initial process. This will melt and re-bond the asphalt.
