Progression in the game involves mining resources, upgrading equipment, earning points by recording discoveries, trading, building a base, and solving the mystery surrounding the Atlas entity. Upon its release in 2016, No Man’s Sky received mixed reviews. Critics praised the technical achievements of the procedurally generated universe but criticized the gameplay as repetitive and lackluster.
The lack of promised features, especially multiplayer, further led to negative feedback. Hello, this situation was exacerbated by the game’s lack of communication after launch, leading to a backlash from disappointed players.
Murray later admitted that their failure to manage hype and player expectations led them to take a more conservative approach to updating announcements until closer to launch. The game’s promotional strategy became the subject of debate and was cited as an example of what not to do in video game marketing.

No Man’s Sky gameplay
No Man’s Sky is an action-adventure survival game where players can choose to play from a first-person or third-person perspective. The game revolves around four core activities: exploration, survival, combat and trading. The player takes on the role of a planetary explorer known as the Traveler in an unknown universe.
They begin their journey on a random planet near a crashed spacecraft at the edge of the galaxy. Equipped with a survival suit, jetpack, and multi-tool, players can scan, mine, and gather resources while defending against creatures and hostile forces.
The game allows players to collect, repair and refuel their spacecraft, allowing them to travel within planets, between planets and space stations within local planetary systems, engage in space battles with alien factions, and perform hyperspace jumps to other stars system. Although No Man’s Sky is an open-ended game, players can choose to follow the guidance of an entity called Atlas to the center of the galaxy.
The most unique aspect of No Man’s Sky is its extensive use of procedural generation. Nearly all elements of the game, including stars, planets, flora, fauna, and sentient alien encounters, are generated using deterministic algorithms and random number generators from a single seed number. This results in a staggering number of planets to explore in the game, more than 18 quadrillion (1.8×1019).
The game’s servers store minimal data as all elements are generated in real-time based on the player’s proximity, ensuring that other players will see the same elements when visiting the same location in the galaxy. While players can make temporary changes to a planet, such as mining resources, these changes are not permanent once the player leaves the area. Since July 2020, the game supports cross-platform play, allowing players on different platforms to interact with each other.
Exploration in No Man’s Sky rewards players with in-game currency called units. Players can earn units by scanning planets, alien bases, flora and fauna during their travels. Being the first to discover something earns you additional units, and players can upload this information to Atlas, receiving credit for the discovery and allowing other players to see their name associated with it. There are restrictions on renaming these features due to content filters. While the game can be played offline, an online connection is required to interact with Atlas.
Survival is a key aspect of the gameplay, as the many planets present a variety of hazards, such as extreme temperatures, toxic gases, and dangerous storms. Players must seek shelter in an alien base or cave to protect themselves, as exposure to these environments will deplete the exoskeleton’s protection and armor and may result in the death of the traveler.
To increase survivability, players can use resources to collect blueprints and craft upgrades to their exoskeleton, multi-tool, and spacecraft. Upgrades synergistically enhance a traveler’s abilities and survivability. Managing your inventory and feature set is crucial, as each element has limited upgrade and resource slots.

Players can acquire additional slots for exoskeleton suits, or purchase ships and multi-tools with more slots. Various elements, including exoskeleton suits, multi-tools and spacecraft, will need to be refueled using collected resources after extended use.
While exploring, travelers may encounter hostile creatures that they can attack. Additionally, Sentinels are self-replicating robots that protect a planet’s resources, and may attract players if they deplete the planet’s resources. Multi-tool weapons can be used to defend against these threats. The game uses a “wanted level” system, with higher wanted levels attracting more powerful opponents.
In space, travelers may face attacks from pirates seeking cargo or disreputable alien factions. Spacecraft weapons can be used in combat. If a traveler dies on a planet, they respawn at the last save point without the exoskeleton’s inventory, which can be restored if the player returns to the location of death. In space, death results in respawn on the station in the local system, but all cargo on board is lost. Recovering these cargoes becomes challenging because pirates may seize them first.
Most star systems have a space station where players can trade resources, various tools and ships, and interact with the different races of aliens that populate the galaxy. Trading posts on planets offer similar functionality. Each alien race has its own language, which is initially incomprehensible to players. However, through frequent communication and the discovery of boulders on planets that aid in translation, players can gradually understand and properly interact with alien non-player characters.
Positive relationships with aliens can lead to future trade and fighting opportunities. Conversely, negative interactions may result in hostility from the alien fleet. The game includes a galactic store accessible at space stations and trading posts, where resources and goods have different values in different systems, allowing players to profit from resource collection and trade.
No Man’s Sky offers extensive crafting capabilities, allowing players to create technology upgrades, components, tradable resources, base building parts, food, and ammunition. Crafting requires blueprints, which can be unlocked by acquiring data modules and trading them on the space station.
Resources are stored in various inventories, including the player’s exoskeleton suit, ship, freighter, exoskeleton, nutrient processor, and storage container. A Refiner or Nutrient Processor can be used to convert resources into other forms, allowing the creation of diverse foods.
While No Man’s Sky is primarily designed as a single-player game, it allows for sharing of discoveries with all players through the Steam Workshop. Friends can also track each other on the game’s galaxy map. Sean Murray, the game’s creator, mentioned that it would take about forty hours of gameplay to reach the center of the galaxy without any side activities.
However, the game encourages players to explore and play in a way that suits them, whether that’s cataloging flora and fauna or establishing trade routes between planets. Players can track friends on the galaxy map and system map. At launch, the limited multiplayer aspect does not require a PlayStation Plus subscription to play online on the PlayStation 4 platform.
