The film begins with Dunnigan revealing the location of a gold mine and then being murdered. The Sheriff arrests Cicero for the crime, but Violet, a local groom, tells the Sheriff that Cicero’s horse never left the stable, indicating his innocence.
As the story goes, Cicero, who had no family, named himself after a character in Shakespeare’s play Julius Caesar. Alice, the minister’s wife, visited Cicero and believed in his innocence.
While some, including Isabel, the prostitute who loved Robert, suspected Cicero of murdering him, others, such as Alice and Violet, believed he was innocent. Violet discovers a love letter from Emma’s alleged lover, hinting at a possible motive for Robert’s murder.

The sheriff remained hesitant to release Cicero, in part because of past mistakes that led to his wife’s death. Meanwhile, Jimmy, the Sheriff’s son and part-time Deputy Sheriff, is investigating the case.
The murderer strikes again and kills Violet. Cicero manages to escape from his cell and is chased by the Sheriff and his men. However, it is revealed that Jimmy is the real murderer, and that he did not act alone.
Jimmy’s motive for the murder is revealed: he fell in love with Emma and killed Isabel at her request. Emma may have wanted Isabel dead because she was having an affair with her husband. It was also discovered that Jimmy may have killed Robert at Emma’s request so they could be together.

Eventually, the Sheriff, along with Thaddeus and Alice, get Cicero into the safety of the church. Thaddeus confirmed that the bullet removed from Cicero’s body was different from the bullet that killed Robert, indicating his innocence.
The film ends with Jimmy murdering Isabelle, revealing his role as the true killer. The motive for the murder was Jimmy’s love for Emma and his willingness to do anything she asked. Violet’s murder was likely the result of evidence she uncovered that may have exposed Emma’s involvement.

The film takes place in Yellowstone, a once boomtown now facing decline. When a prospector named Dunnigan strikes gold, the town’s fortunes seem to change. However, tragedy struck and Dunnigan was found murdered shortly after his discovery.
Sheriff Ambrose, played by Gabriel Byrne, is immediately suspicious of a newcomer to town named Cicero, a former slave. Despite the lack of concrete evidence, the sheriff blamed the murders on Cicero because he was in possession of the gold. While the film doesn’t explicitly explore issues of racism, it does contain a subplot involving a gay couple that doesn’t have a significant impact on the main narrative.
Screenwriter Eric Bergauer tried to give each character his or her own story and development. However, despite the relatively simple plot, this results in a lengthy running time of over two hours. The film struggles to effectively explore its themes, and although the characters have backstories, they lack depth and personality.

As the story progresses, the focus shifts to the moral and physical conflict between the preacher, played by Thomas Jane, and Sheriff Ambrose. Director Richard Gray directs the climactic shootout deftly and includes some satisfying character-related payoffs. However, while the film attempts to emphasize the emotions of its characters, it falls short in terms of emotional investment.
While attentive viewers may be able to predict the killer’s identity, the motivations behind the murders are interesting but underutilized. The film tests the viewer’s patience at times, but becomes bearable by the time it reaches its action-packed climax. However, the lack of emotional depth leaves viewers wanting more.
All in all, “Yellowstone Murders” presents an interesting period setting and dedicated performances from its cast. However, it falls short in thematic exploration and character development. The film’s ultimate payoff may not be as satisfying as expected, and its lengthy running time requires the viewer’s patience.

The film introduces us to Yellowstone, a once boomtown that is now in decline. When prospector Dunnigan (Zach McGowan) discovers gold, his luck seems to be improving, but tragedy strikes and he is murdered.
Sheriff Ambrose (Gabriel Byrne) immediately blames the murders on Cicero (Isaiah Mustafa), a former slave who recently arrived in town, despite the fact that Cicero possesses some gold. There is no conclusive evidence outside. Despite the Sheriff’s racist attitudes, the film doesn’t explicitly mention racism, but it does include the inexplicable reveal of a gay couple, which doesn’t have much of an impact on the overall story.
Screenwriter Eric Belgau attempted to give each character his or her own story and development, resulting in a relatively simple narrative that clocks in at over two hours. Unfortunately, the script doesn’t explore its themes effectively, and despite spending a lot of time on backstory, the characters lack depth and personality.

As the film progresses, it puts many of the characters aside (after trying to develop them) and focuses on the general moral and physical struggle between the preacher (Thomas Jane) and the lawman. Director Richard Gray brings some smart direction to the climactic shootout and includes some fun character-related payoffs. However, the film ultimately fails, lacking emotional investment despite its efforts in this regard.
While the killer’s grand reveal may be predictable to attentive viewers, there are some interesting motivations behind these events that are unfortunately wasted and lack logical coherence. Murders in Yellowstone tests the viewer’s patience at times, but by the time the story reaches its action-centric climax, it becomes bearable. However, given the film’s strong emphasis on the characters’ emotions, one wishes the film had delivered a more emotionally engaging experience.
All in all, “Murder in Yellowstone” offers period drama detail and dedicated performances from its cast, but falls short in thematic exploration and character development. The film’s ultimate payoff may not be as satisfying as hoped, and will require a fair amount of patience to endure its running time.
