Mordhau
Mordhau is a competitive, skill-based multiplayer game developed by Criterion, featuring medieval hack-and-slash combat with customizable characters. The game emphasizes hand-to-hand combat techniques like feints and redirection and also includes ranged weapons, siege engines, and mounted combat. It was released on Steam in April 2019 and is currently in development for PlayStation and Xbox consoles. The game was partially funded by a Kickstarter campaign in 2017, which raised close to $300,000.

In a July 2019 article for PC Gamer, Samuel Horti reported on Mordhau’s issues with toxic players using homophobic, racist, and sexist language without sufficient punishment from Triternion. Horti criticized the developer’s approach to word filtering and player banning, suggesting they were too lenient to avoid accusations of censorship.

Horti also raised concerns about Triternion’s plans for handling diversity in upcoming expansions, quoting a developer who suggested players would have the option to enable and disable different character options. A Mordhau moderator also mentioned the possibility of adding a client-side toggle for players concerned about character realism in a Steam community forum post from April 2019.
Mordhau achieved great success, selling over 200,000 copies within a week of its release and surpassing 500,000 copies sold by May 7th. The game reached the top of the Steam sales charts, but the influx of players caused server issues, prompting an apology from Triternion. By the one-month mark, Mordhau had sold 1 million copies, and in celebration, the developers added a new map, weapons, and cosmetics.
Mordhau Weapon Tier List
Mordhau, considered by many as the spiritual successor to Chivalry, is a first-person medieval sword-fighting game that heavily relies on skill. With a mix of dark humor and brutal realism, Mordhau offers an immersive sword-fighting experience that includes large-scale 20v20 conquests for territory and intimate 1v1 duels. Players can collect a wide variety of weapons and unlock various skills to enhance their gameplay.
- S Tier: These weapons are the best in the game and should be your top priority to unlock and upgrade. One S-tier weapon can take you far, while a full party of them makes endgame content easy.
- A Tier: These weapons are still strong but fall short when compared to the S tier. They’re great for filling gaps in your collection, but you should replace them with an S tier when possible.
- B Tier: These weapons are easy to obtain and solid, but not exceptional. They’re useful in the early stages of the game and can be swapped out for higher tiers as you progress.
- C Tier: While not the worst, C tier weapons have limited uses and are typically outperformed by higher tiers. Consider their strengths and weaknesses before using them.
- D Tier: These weapons should be avoided at all costs. They suffer from significant balance issues and are never worth using, regardless of game mode or stage.

Mordhau Weapons
Mordhau offers a vast selection of weapons for players to choose from, making it one of the game’s best features. From PvP mode battles to Horde mode enemy waves, players can use a wide range of weapons, including Lutes and massive Pole Axes.
Certain weapons in Mordhau are more effective in battle than others, particularly those that can be wielded efficiently by the average player. The best weapons should also be able to deal decent damage to opponents with varying levels of armor, making them versatile in combat. There are some 15 best weapons in the Mordhau game, here we listed below.
Crossbow
- Type of Weapon: Ranged
- Price: 21 gold
- Damages:
- Head: 110/100/67/65
- Torso: 60/50/42/40
- Legs: 50/40/35/31
The Crossbow is a great choice for players who prefer to attack from a distance, providing they have good aim. It can even deal more headshot damage than the Longbow. However, the downside is the long reload time which forces players to look down and leaves them vulnerable. To counter this, players can take a Pavise Shield with them and use it as cover while reloading, reminiscent of Genoese Crossbowmen.
Heavy Handaxe
- Weapon Type: One-Handed
- Cost: 9
- Head Damage: 100/100/68/50
- Torso Damage: 75/62/53/40
- Leg Damage: 65/52/43/35
The Heavy Handaxe in Mordhau is an affordable weapon that is often overlooked but can be highly effective against unarmored foes. However, its slow attack speed and limited range make it vulnerable to certain weapons.
One unique feature of the Heavy Handaxe is its ability to double as a tool for repairing barriers in Horde mode. This adds an extra layer of versatility to the weapon, making it a valuable asset for players looking to defend their base against waves of enemies.
Longbow
- Weapon Type: Ranged
- Cost: 33
- Head Damage: 100/100/54/50
- Torso Damage: 70/50/36/34
- Leg Damage: 50/40/27/25
Despite its hefty gear cost of 33 points, the Longbow is an exceptional weapon in Mordhau and a top choice for those who prefer ranged combat. While the high cost may leave little room for armor or perks, the power and effectiveness of the Longbow are undeniable.
As with any ranged weapon, the Longbow’s effectiveness relies heavily on the player’s aim. However, its faster reload time compared to the Crossbow provides players with more mobility and allows for quicker repositioning between shots.
Bastard Sword
- Weapon Type: One-Handed or Two-Handed
- Cost: 12
- Head Damage: 90/80/42/37
- Torso Damage: 75/65/32/27
- Leg Damage: 60/60/27/22

With its ability to be used in either one or two hands, the Bastard Sword is one of the more versatile swords in Mordhau. This makes it a great choice for players who want to use a shield alongside their swords. While the Bastard Sword may not have the highest damage output, its fast swings can be difficult for opponents to anticipate and defend against.
Mace
- Weapon Type: One-Handed
- Cost: 11
- Head Damage: 103/102/71/61
- Torso Damage: 53/52/51/50
- Leg Damage: 52/50/48/46
The Mace is a one-handed blunt weapon that excels at dealing damage to heavily armored enemies. However, due to its limited range, players will need to close in on their targets.
Surprisingly, the Mace can be thrown using the Alt attack, which may look comical but can actually be advantageous in certain scenarios. The Mace’s versatility makes it one of the most enjoyable weapons to use in Mordhau, as well as one of the best.
Pole Axe
- Weapon Type: Two-Handed
- Cost: 18
- Head Damage: 100/78/53/48
- Torso Damage: 70/63/38/35
- Leg Damage: 65/53/36/34
The Pole Axe is considered one of the best weapons in Mordhau due to its exceptional reach and versatility. It allows players to maintain distance from single opponents, making it easier to dodge their attacks.
In group battles, the Pole Axe becomes a deadly weapon, capable of swiftly sweeping and attacking with great efficiency. However, while it ranks high among weapons, there are others with better performance and reach. Nevertheless, for beginners, the Pole Axe is a solid option.
Maul
- Weapon Type: Two-Handed
- Cost: 21
- Head Damage: 100/100/100/100
- Torso Damage: 85/83/67/66
- Leg Damage: 75/73/66/65
If you choose to main with the Maul, prepare for a love/hate relationship. While the weapon’s potential to inflict savage damage is undeniable, it also has slow swing speed and lackluster reach that demands precision overcome.
The Maul is best utilized with heavily armored targets and tanky builds, and practice is required to achieve mastery of this weapon. Once you’re acquainted with the Maul’s idiosyncrasies, you’ll become a formidable adversary on the battlefield.
Messer
- Weapon Type: One-Handed or Two-Handed
- Cost: 15
- Head Damage: 100/75/62/48
- Torso Damage: 70/60/52/40
- Leg Damage: 60/50/42/34
The Messer is a weapon that lives up to its name, creating chaos on the battlefield. With comparable reach to a Greatsword and unmatched damage output, the Messer is a formidable choice.
However, its strength comes at the cost of a slower attack speed, not unlike the Maul. Mastery of this weapon requires commitment and practice, making it a more challenging option for newer players. But, those with patience and experience will find the Messer to be a valuable but demanding addition to their arsenal.
Battle Axe
- Weapon Type: Two-Handed
- Cost: 15
- Head Damage: 100/100/68/60
- Torso Damage: 75/62/53/45
- Leg Damage: 65/52/43/35
Compared to most swords and axes, the Battle Axe offers superior reach, though it falls short of the Pole Axe in this regard. However, its length enables players to strike from further away while keeping enemies at bay. While its damage output could be stronger, it still proves effective in combat.
The Battle Axe serves as an excellent alternative for players looking for a more mobile option than the Maul or the Messer. Coupled with a Bloodlust-based build, this weapon can efficiently slice through foes.
War Axe
- Weapon Type: Two-Handed
- Cost: 15
- Head Damage: 130/105/80/55
- Torso Damage: 100/75/65/50
- Leg Damage: 80/65/55/45
The War Axe and the Battle Axe share many similarities, with the former being slightly shorter in length but compensating with increased damage and attack speed. As a result, many players consider the War Axe to be a superior option.
In terms of versatility and utility, the War Axe is arguably the strongest axe in Mordhau. It is well-suited for players who are skilled at blocking, dodging, or withstanding damage. Overall, the War Axe is a reliable and formidable choice for those who favor axe-based combat.
Throwing Knives
- Weapon Type: Ranged
- Cost: 4
- Head Damage: 95/65/35/30
- Torso Damage: 55/50/20/15
- Leg Damage: 40/35/5/5

In Mordhau, ranged weapons are often overshadowed by their melee counterparts due to their limited ammo and lower damage output. However, there is one exception to this rule: Throwing Knives. These knives are incredibly versatile and can be just as effective as many melee weapons, if not more so.
Not only are Throwing Knives great for taking out unarmored opponents quickly, but they also have fast priming and throwing speeds, making them useful against heavily armored foes as well. Additionally, Throwing Knives are relatively cheap in terms of gear points, allowing players to include them in most builds. While they may not be a player’s primary weapon of choice, Throwing Knives are arguably the most useful ranged weapons in Mordhau.
Greatsword
- Weapon Type: Two-Handed
- Cost: 21
- Head Damage: 100/80/60/48
- Torso Damage: 75/65/43/38
- Leg Damage: 65/55/34/34
The Greatsword is a versatile weapon that excels in various situations. Despite its size, it boasts a relatively fast attack speed, offers multiple combat styles, and deals significant damage. Additionally, it is a cost-effective option, leaving room for better armor in a loadout.
For those uncertain about which weapon to use, the Greatsword serves as an excellent default choice. It is often the preferred weapon of experienced players, and mastering it can benefit players of all skill levels.
Zweihander
- Weapon Type: Two-Handed
- Cost: 24
- Head Damage: 115/100/70/50
- Torso Damage: 100/85/55/40
- Leg Damage: 70/65/40/39
The Zweihander is a weapon that is essentially a longer version of the Greatsword, giving it a greater reach and more damage potential. In the hands of a skilled player, it can be a deadly tool in the front of the battle, especially when paired with heavy armor.
However, it does come with a higher gear cost, which limits the player’s ability to wear as much armor as they would with other weapons. Additionally, its attack speed can be slower than other weapons. Nonetheless, players who are comfortable with its speed and don’t mind sacrificing some armor can use the Zweihander to quickly cut down their enemies.
Eveningstar
- Weapon Type: Two-Handed
- Cost: 21
- Head Damage: 102/100/77/65
- Torso Damage: 62/59/57/55
- Leg Damage: 57/50/45/45
The Eveningstar is often regarded as the ultimate weapon in Mordhau by many players. Its excellent stamina management and ability to disarm opponents make it a formidable choice. With a full strike, it can even take down heavily armored enemies in just two hits.
While it may not be the best option for team fights due to its limited range, the Eveningstar shines in one-on-one duels or battles on the front. For players looking for a reliable and deadly weapon, the Eveningstar should be at the top of their list.
Halberd
- Weapon Type: Two-Handed
- Cost: 24
- Head Damage: 115/100/70/48
- Torso Damage: 100/75/55/40
- Leg Damage: 85/65/45/37
The Halberd could be considered the ultimate weapon in this multiplayer game, due to its outstanding reach, high damage, and versatility. It’s no surprise that many players specifically train with this weapon to be able to handle any threat that comes their way.
The Halberd’s long reach is one of its biggest advantages, as it allows the player to keep their enemies at bay while dealing damage, whether facing a single opponent or a group. It’s no wonder that seasoned frontline fighters often opt for this weapon.
How to Throw Weapon in Mordhau?
In Mordhau, throwing weapons and items requires some knowledge. Firstly, not all weapons can be thrown in the game, such as heavy two-handed weapons like the Zweihander. However, many one-handed weapons can be thrown after switching to their alternate mode.
To check if a weapon can be thrown, players can edit their mercenary’s gear in the Armory. By viewing a purchased weapon and selecting “Advanced” options, they can check the “Alternate Mode” box to see the weapon’s stats. If “Projectile Speed” is listed, the weapon can be thrown.
You can also tell if a weapon can be thrown by switching to its alternate mode with the “R” key. If your mercenary throws the weapon instead of changing its grip, then you know it can be thrown. However, it’s best to wait until your enemy is in range before throwing your weapon. If you’re using a throwable item like the Fire Bomb, you can throw it by clicking the Left Mouse Button. To retrieve a thrown weapon, simply walk up to where it landed on the ground or in the chest of your defeated enemy, and press the “E” key to interact and pick it up.
It’s important to note that throwing a weapon requires accuracy, and enemies can parry the thrown weapon by using their Right Mouse Button and timing it properly. Here are some examples of weapons that can be thrown: the Smoke Bomb, Fire Bomb, Arming Sword, Falchion, Frying Pan, and Axe.
