Mark Strong’s 10 Best Movies, Ranked

Primarily known for his roles as cold and calculating movie villains, Mark Strong has carved out a niche for himself as one of Hollywood’s finest supporting actors. Known for his collaborations with Matthew Vaughan and Guy Ritchie, Strong has featured in some of the most acclaimed and influential movies that modern cinema has to offer. Typically serving as a memorable and compelling antagonistic foil for the film in question, Strong has leveraged the natural gravitas of his voice and a magnetic screen presence to maximum effect.

However, the man rumored to be playing Dumbledore in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter remake series doesn’t just do villains. Strong’s impressive range has allowed him to step outside his comfort zone on multiple occasions, producing impressive supporting bows as non-antagonistic characters that have been just as well received as his more wicked roles. Consistently elevating the quality of his films through his considerable dramatic gifts, Strong’s best movies highlight why he remains one of Britain’s most universally respected performers to this day.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle, the second film in the Kingman franchise, is based on the comic book series of the same name by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons. Kingsman: The Golden Circle continues the story of Eggsy (Taron Egerton), now codenamed Galahad. When a mysterious cartel known as the Golden Circle threatens international security, Eggsy must travel to America to request the help of the Statesman agency. The Golden Circle sees Egerton, Mark Strong, and Colin Firth reprise their roles from the previous film, and also introduces Julianne Moore, Channing Tatum, Pedro Pascal, Halle Berry, and Jeff Bridges to the franchise in supporting roles.

2017’s Kingsman: The Golden Circle saw Strong reprise his role as Merlin from 2014’s Kingsman: The Secret Service. Chronicling the agency’s attempts to take down the titular drug cartel, Matthew Vaughn’s sequel failed to receive the same degree of positive reception from critics and was deemed inferior to the original. However, the movie saw Strong shine in a more involved role for his character, culminating with his character’s heroic self-sacrifice after stepping on a mine.

Merlin singing John Denver’s Take Me Home, Country Roads before his demise is arguably the finest scene in the movie, with the character’s tear-jerking final act serving as one of the franchise’s most memorable moments. The Golden Circle is decidedly not a faultless sequel, but Strong’s memorable supporting bow is one of the key factors in helping to elevate the movie above its more prevalent shortcomings.

A criminally underrated sci-fi movie from Danny Boyle boasting a 76% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, 2007’s Sunshine follows a perilous mission through space to save humanity by reigniting the dying Sun. Featuring an impressive ensemble cast that includes the likes of Cillian Murphy and Chris Evans, Sunshine sees Strong take on the role of the movie’s chief antagonist, Pinbacker.

…Pinbacker is not the most nuanced villain Strong has ever played, but he still does sterling work in bringing this crazed astronaut to life.

The captain of a previous mission with the same objective, Pinbacker sabotaged his mandate and murdered his own crew under delusions of divine intervention. A nihilistic maniac hellbent on dooming life on Earth, Pinbacker is not the most nuanced villain Strong has ever played, but he still does sterling work in bringing this crazed astronaut to life. Covered in appalling burns from exposure to unfiltered sunlight, Pinbacker serves as a worthy foil for our heroes as the movie reaches its climactic sequences.

The Siege of Jadotville is a war drama based on real events, depicting Irish Commandant Pat Quinlan’s leadership during a standoff with French and Belgian mercenaries in the Congo in the early 1960s. Released in 2016, it portrays the bravery and challenges faced by Quinlan and his troops.

Arguably the quintessential example of an underrated war movie that deserves more love, 2016’s The Siege of Jadotville depicts the Irish army’s role in the movie’s titular engagement during the Congo Crisis. Producing yet another excellent supporting bow in a war film, Richie Smyth’s picture features Strong as Conor Cruise O’Brien, the Irish diplomat tasked with overseeing the crisis by the United Nations whose ill-advised actions precipitate the siege.

In addition to Strong, The Siege of Jadotville stars Jamie Dornan as Irish Army Commandant, Patrick Quinlan.

Leveraging his trademark commanding screen presence to lend authenticity to his portrayal of this morally ambiguous politician, Strong’s bow as the man known as “The Cruiser” is one of several highlights among an array of first-rate supporting performances. Smyth’s feature film debut is a thrilling entry for the genre, one that pays tribute to the heroics of the real-life individuals involved in the battle. A notable feather in Strong’s cap, The Siege of Jadotville remains one of the more underappreciated war films in recent memory.

Featuring some of the most memorable gangster movie scenes that Guy Ritchie’s filmography has to offer, RocknRolla serves as one of the director’s more underappreciated offerings to date. The 2008 crime comedy marked Strong’s (pardon the pun) second collaboration with Ritchie following 2005’s maligned Revolver, with RocknRolla receiving considerably more positive reviews than its predecessor.

Stepping into the boots of the movie’s narrator and the right-hand man to RocknRolla’s chief antagonist Lenny Cole, the actor turns in an excellent performance as the hardened career criminal Archy, one that is contentiously the pick of the movie’s cast of colorful supporting characters. The film focuses on Turing’s work during the war and his personal life during that time, as well as the tragic story of his life after the war and his death in 1954. A biographical thriller inspired by the true story of Alan Turing and his efforts to decrypt the Nazi coding machine known as Enigma during WWII, The Imitation Game was dogged by controversy concerning the purported downplaying of the main character’s sexuality and the importance of his wider team at Bletchley Park. With that being said, Morten Tyldum’s 2014 movie was critically acclaimed, garnering a 90% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and earning eight Academy Award nominations.

The movie’s scenes featuring Menzies and Turing together have been debunked as historically inaccurate; in reality, there is no indication that the two men ever interacted during their time at Bletchley Park.

The film sees Mark Strong conjure up a typically chilling supporting performance as the real-life figure, Stewart Menzies, the ruthlessly calculating head of the British Secret Intelligence Service. Overshadowed by the leading likes of Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley, the actor’s performance often flies under the radar; a crying shame given the solemn gravitas and foreboding pragmatism that Strong imbues his charge with.

A dramatization of the true story behind the global manhunt for Osama bin Laden, Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty retains status as a critics’ darling to this day, despite troubling accusations of pro-torture rhetoric and political biases. Controversy aside, the 2012 war thriller received rave reviews, garnering five nominations at the 85th Academy Awards and rubber-stamping Bigelow’s status as one of the genre’s finest directors.

Zero Dark Thirty won its only Oscar for Best Sound Editing, sharing the award with Skyfall.

Mark Strong only features in a supporting role, but still has a vital part to play in the lauded movie. The Stardust alum plays “George,” a high-ranking CIA supervisor tasked with overseeing the hunt for the man behind the 9/11 terrorist attacks. This may be one of Strong’s more fleeting appearances, but the widespread critical acclaim associated with the film means that Zero Dark Thirty is unquestionably one of the finest cinematic outings to feature the actor.

Widely regarded as one of Matthew Vaughn’s best movies, 2010’s cult-classic Kick-Ass proved to be an unexpected critical and commercial hit. Gleefully subverting every superhero trope in the book through a wicked cocktail of dark comedy and supremely graphic violence, the success of the Aaron Taylor-Johnson-led outing led to a 2013 sequel, with Vaughn also revealing in 2024 that a new trilogy of films based on the original is currently in development.

Kick-Ass wouldn’t have been the rampant success that it was without a sterling villain, a status quo due in large part to Mark Strong’s exemplary performance as crime boss, Frank D’Amico. While he’s primarily known for producing dark and brooding antagonists, Strong seizes the opportunity to flex his comedic muscles here with both hands. A testament to his impressive range, the actor turns in some of the movie’s funniest sequences without sacrificing any of his inimitable villainous aura.

One of the greatest Cold War movies of all time, 2011’s Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is a glorious spider’s web of paranoia and subterfuge. Lending uncharacteristic vulnerability to his charge, Strong turns in a career best performance as Prideaux. The veteran actor is at the top of his game, deftly balancing his role as a hardened spy with that of a betrayed and emotionally broken friend. Regrettably, Gary Oldman’s Oscar-nominated leading turn as George Smiley often overshadows Mark Strong’s stirring performance, a desperately unfair status quo given the sterling quality of his finest bow to date.
