- Lil Jon, whose real name is Jonathan H. Smith, was born and raised in a middle-class community southwest of Atlanta, Georgia.
- He is the oldest of five children, his father is an aerospace engineer who served in the military, and his mother is a medic in the military. His three siblings later followed in their parents’ footsteps and served in the U.S. military.
- Lil Jon attended Beecher Hills Elementary School and Southwest Middle School in the Atlanta Public School District.
- Described by his mother as a high achiever and a lover of books, Jon Jr. formed lifelong friendships in middle school, including Robert McDowell, Dwayne “Emperor” Searcy and Vince Phillips, all of whom would later become his business partners.
- The group is immersed in skate culture and works out of Skate Escape, a popular skateboard and bike shop near Piedmont Park.
- While his friends attended Benjamin Mays High School, young Jon chose the magnet program at Frederick Douglass High School and became a member of the marching band.
- At the age of 15, Lil Jon taught himself to be a DJ. Although his parents were very strict with him, they allowed him to hold family parties in their basement to practice DJ skills, preferring to let him be supervised by his parents.
