- Joseph Matthew Alwyn was born on February 21, 1991 in Tonbridge Wells, Kent, England.
- He grew up in North London, the son of a psychotherapist mother and a documentary filmmaker father, and the great-grandson of composer William Alwyn.
- He attended City School in London, where he briefly learned guitar and played in the school band, Anger Management. He later began playing football and rugby.
- Although an “introverted” child, Alvin aspired to be an actor and auditioned for the film Love Actually (2003), but did not get the role.
- As a teenager he joined the National Youth Theatre and, while studying for a BA in English Literature and Drama at Bristol University, starred in two student productions at the Edinburgh International Festival.
- When he graduated in 2012, he was rejected by several drama schools but was accepted by the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, where he obtained a BA in Acting.
- In his third year of the acting course, he signed with an agent who helped him land the lead role in Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk (2016), his film debut.
