Jason Momoa’s best movies and TV shows include some massive blockbusters, fan favorites, and some underseen gems. The American actor made his acting debut in the series Baywatch: Hawaii as Jason Ioane, but it wasn’t until the early 2010s that he started to earn some notoriety, thanks largely to his performance as Khal Drogo on the first season of Game of Thrones. That quickly led to Momoa taking the lead in other shows as well as starring in high-profile movies.
Momoa solidified his A-list status with his role in the DCEU as Aquaman. While that era is over for him, he is confirmed to be returning to the DC universe, playing Lobo in Supergirl: World of Tomorrow. Clearly, there is a lot to be excited about with Momoa’s future in movies and television, but he has already established an impressive career filled with action-hero roles, memorable villains, and some projects that more people should see.

Jason Momoa represents a new era of Hollywood action heroes, so it is fitting that he got to start his career by going toe-to-toe with one of the greatest action movie stars of all time. From legendary director Walter Hill, Bullet to the Head is a gritty action thriller starring Sylvester Stallone as a hardened assassin who teams up with a detective (Sung Kang) to take down the crooked politician who killed their respective partners.
Momoa gets to play the movie’s most intimidating villain, Keegan, a ruthless assassin sent to take out both men. The highlight of the film is the showdown between Momoa and Stallone, in which Momoa plays the character as a man thrilled by the deadly completion. The movie itself is a decent throwback action flick that falls short of Hill’s other classics but should satisfy genre fans.

Just before facing off with Stallone, Jason Momoa got his first major starring role in Hollywood, taking over a role made famous by Arnold Schwarzenegger. Conan the Barbarian is a fantasy action movie that reimagines the titular warrior. Momoa plays the barbaric warrior who is on a relentless quest to hunt down the warlord who attacked his village and killed his father when he was a young boy.
However, in the years since its disappointing release, Conan the Barbarian has been reevaluated as a flawed but entertaining ride…
The movie was a box office and critical failure which ended any plans of Momoa leading a franchise as this character. However, in the years since its disappointing release, Conan the Barbarian has been reevaluated as a flawed but entertaining ride with its gore and brutality closer to author Robert E. Howard’s original vision for the character. Momoa also proved himself a commanding lead actor alongside the physicality of the role.

Frontier was one of the first television roles Jason Momoa stepped into following his breakout role on Game of Thrones, this time taking the starring role. Frontier is a historical drama set in the Canadian wilderness during the 1700s. Momoa plays Declan Harp, a half-Native outlaw who faces off with the powerful and corrupt Hudson Bay Company to break their monopoly on the fur trade in his country.
The series is a David vs. Goliath tale, though Momoa makes for an imposing hero in the underdog role. Declan is a powerful and brutal survivor who is willing to fight for what he believes is the right of him and his people. The show gives an intense and thrilling look at the harsh life of this time. The violence is unflinching and it offers a historical adventure focusing on a fascinating subject that is not often explored in Hollywood stories.

Despite his star power, Jason Momoa has had several movies that have failed to reach a wide audience, with Braven being one worth seeking out. Jason Momoa stars as Joe Braven, a logger and family man living in a small town. When he and his family head to their isolated cabin, they discover criminals have stashed their drugs there. When the criminals return looking for their stash, Joe and his family are put in their crossfire and he must fight to keep them safe.
Braven does not break new ground as an action movie, but it is an entertaining ride from beginning to end.
Braven presents Momoa with an action-hero role he would play many times in his career, the protective family man who is pushed to moments of extreme violence to save the ones he loves. Momoa can be a larger-than-life character on screen at times, but he is able to play grounded heroes like this as well. Braven does not break new ground as an action movie, but it is an entertaining ride from beginning to end.

Like Frontier, See is a series that Jason Momoa did after Game of Thrones that saw him playing a ruthless warrior living in a dangerous, wild world. However, unlike Frontier, See takes place in the future, imagining a post-apocalyptic reality in which the human population has been rendered blind. Momoa plays Baba Voss, a skilled warrior who must protect his children when he comes to learn they are able to see.
The Apple TV+ series is filled with strong world-building and interesting mythology, even if the story doesn’t always move forward in a satisfying way. However, Momoa elevates the show with his intense performance as the loving and protective family man who has to balance that with his skill for violence. The highlight of the series came in season 2 with Momoa facing off with Dave Bautista as his villainous brother.

Following Jason Momoa’s cameo in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, his first real appearance was in the theatrical cut of Justice League, which didn’t impress too many people. However, that film was given a surprising shot at redemption when a fan campaign led to Warner Bros. releasing Zack Snyder’s epic 4-hour cut of the superhero team-up which was received much more warmly.
The movie is without the witty team banter between these superhero characters and instead treats them as epic figures of mythology. This helps to make Momoa’s Aquaman a more intriguing and memorable character. While he is not given as much to do as the other heroes, Momoa’s physicality and presence help to change the perception of Aquaman as a character. While Snyder’s vision of the DC universe is over, this movie remains an enticing promise of what he had planned.

Though he joined the long-running Fast Saga late in its series, Jason Momoa found a way to steal the show in a franchise that has already featured other Hollywood tough guys like Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson. Fast X sees the past coming back to haunt Dom Toretto and his family as Dante Reyes (Momoa) sets out on a path of vengeance after Dom and his crew killed his father during the events of Fast Five.
Going for a flamboyant flare rather than the intense tough guy role these baddies are usually like, Momoa is funny, chaotic, and seems to be having a blast with the role.

With Aquaman’s shaky beginnings in the DCEU, there were a lot of questions about how his first solo movie would turn out. Surprisingly, Aquaman ended up being a shot of fun and wildness that the cinematic universe was in need of. The movie explores the backstory of Arthur Curry aka Aquaman, and also deals with his return to Atlantis to take on his ambitious half-brother, who has plans to wage war on the humans of the surface world for what they have done to the oceans.
Momoa finally gets the opportunity to fully embrace his superhero character and he does not disappoint. His version of Aquaman is a wild, reckless, and partying rebel who has to come to terms with his responsibility as a hero. Momoa brings humor, intensity, and vulnerability to the role while also being backed by a strong cast, including Nicole Kidman, Willem Dafoe, and Patrick Wilson.

Though Jason Momoa’s time on Game of Thrones was brief, he certainly made a lasting impact on fans. The fantasy series is an adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s book series A Song of Ice and Fire, taking audiences to the world of Westeros. It is an epic look at the various houses and powerful figures vying for control over the Iron Throne while bigger and more supernatural threats begin to close in on the kingdom.
Momoa appeared in season 1 of Game of Thrones as Khal Drogo, the mighty and ruthless Dothraki warlord who becomes husband to Daenerys Targaryen. It was a small role for Momoa, but one that he filled with intensity and brutality, making him a memorable force long after he was gone. Though the ending of Game of Thrones soured the experience for many viewers, it remains one of the best series of all time with a scale that changed the way television was made.
