Shri Gauri Sawant’s Story
Shreegauri Sawant’s life journey is a profound story of self-discovery and resilience. Born Ganesh Sawant in Bhavanipeth Sarkari hostel in Pune, her upbringing was marked by the complexities of her gender identity. Because her mother’s pregnancies were widely spaced, abortion was considered. However, this is prevented by the Doctor’s assurance that she is strong and has evolved. This uncertain beginning laid the foundation for her own ambiguous gender identity.
Shrigauri, who lost her mother when she was seven, found comfort in her friendships with girls and loved playing games like “ghar-ghar” (playing house) with them. When asked about her aspirations at the age of 10, she bravely declared that she wanted to be a mother, despite society’s expectations that she be a police officer like her father. As she comes to terms with her femininity, tensions between her father and her increase.
Shri Gauri left his home in Pune and traveled to Dadar area of Mumbai. There, she met a friend who was a transgender sex worker and they provided her with temporary shelter and food. Her path eventually led her to Humsafar Trust, a prominent LGBTQ+ organization in India, where her communication skills earned her a position on the communications and outreach team. Her monthly salary is Rs. The $1,500 allows her to support herself.
Shreegauri’s involvement with the LGBTQ+ community led her to become one of the petitioners in the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) case in 2013. This landmark case led to the Supreme Court’s historic 2014 decision recognizing transgender people as a third gender. Additionally, she has advocated for adoption rights for transgender people through a Supreme Court petition. Her journey as a mother takes a major turn when she adopts an orphan girl named Gayatri, providing her with care, education and love.
Shreegauri attracted widespread attention in 2017 when she became the face of Vicks’ campaign, playing a transgender mother raising an orphan. Her story resonated with people across India and she even appeared in the popular TV show “Kaun Banega Crorepati”. Prize money from the show allowed her to build homes for sex workers in need.
Throughout her journey, Shreegauri’s deep bond with her adopted daughter Gayatri has been the driving force behind her transformation from a boy struggling with his gender identity to a woman embracing motherhood. Her story is a testament to her strength, resilience and commitment to challenging social norms and stereotypes.
