The idea for Pacific Avenue began in 2019 when Alexander Dracott, the main man, drove through a place called the Olympic Peninsula. He thought it would be a great game, but he needed help to make it happen. So he started putting together a team during the COVID-19 pandemic, and while it was tough, they made it happen.
They announced Pacific Drive in September 2022, and it was ultimately released on PlayStation 5 and Windows on February 22, 2024. People generally loved it, saying that its atmosphere and interesting characters really immersed them in the world. But some found the gameplay a bit repetitive and difficult. Still, it looks like a fun adventure for anyone who enjoys survival games and exploring cool landscapes.

Pacific Avenue Gameplay
In Pacific Drive you’ll embark on a survival adventure set in 1998 in the Olympic Restricted Area, a mysterious region in the Pacific Northwest. You can explore the area on foot or in a station wagon. A cool feature of this game is that you can customize your ride in the garage, which acts as your home base.
Using the headset, you can find out what’s wrong with your car and repair it. Sometimes your vehicle might exhibit some strange behavior, like a honking sound when you try to turn the steering wheel. You’ll need to make repairs as you go to keep your vehicle running smoothly. While you’re out and about, you’ll encounter different challenges. You might need to change a flat tire or use a blowtorch to do some welding. But for bigger repairs, you’ll have to go back to the garage.
Speaking of the garage, there’s a cool invention station where you can gather resources and craft all sorts of gadgets. These gadgets can help you find new roads, fuel your car, and even disrupt the area you’re in. But it’s not just about repairing your car. You’ll come across metal monsters that will grab onto your car and cause trouble. You’ll have to fight them off with a circular saw. Plus, there are electrical anomalies and obstacles that will interfere with your electronics, which adds to the challenge.
As you explore, you’ll find crafting recipes, upgrade blueprints, and clues to help you escape the area. Collecting energy cores in each level will unlock the door to the garage. But be careful, because doing so will make things more difficult, stirring up enemies and bringing about a dangerous storm that threatens to consume you. So, you’ll have to balance progress with staying safe in this thrilling journey of survival.

The journey to create Pacific Roads began when Alexander Dracott decided to start his own studio, Ironwood Studios, in 2019 after working at several well-known game studios. The inspiration for Pacific Roads came from a drive through the Olympic Peninsula, where Dracott was struck by the vibe of the Pacific Northwest, which was very similar to his childhood memories of Portland, Oregon.
Initially, Delacorte began to conceive of the idea alone, but soon realized that he needed a team to realize his vision. So, amid the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, he began to assemble his own team. By 2022, they were all settled in the Seattle office and ready to dive into the project.
The team focused on making the connection between the player and the car the core of the game. Lead designer Seth Rosen stressed that the condition of the player’s vehicle is an important indicator of their progress in the game. They wanted players to pay attention to the condition of their vehicles and choose non-scripted moments instead of scripted moments to create a more immersive experience. They also avoided adding overly frustrating elements, such as inventory management or resource collection, aiming to provide a more fluid gameplay experience.
The game was announced at PlayStation’s State of Play event in 2022, with a debut trailer that made a splash. The game was originally scheduled for release in 2023, but the team decided to push the release date back to early 2024 to ensure they could polish the game without undue pressure. In June, they revealed a partnership with Kepler Interactive for publishing. Finally, a story trailer at the PC Gaming Show in November revealed an official release date of February 22, 2024.
Throughout the development process, the team drew inspiration from their collective experiences and various games, bringing their vision to life using Unreal Engine 4. Their journey has been one of dedication, collaboration, and focus on delivering an unforgettable gaming experience in Pacific Drive.
