In 1962, in Detroit, Michigan, young car salesman Curtis Taylor Jr. met Effie White and Deena Jones on an R&B talent show. ) and Lorrell Robinson (Lorrell Robinson) formed the black girl group “The Dreamettes”. Curtis became their manager and recruited them as backup singers for R&B star Jimmy “Thunder” Early.
He founded his own record label, Rainbow Records, and began shaping The Dreamettes’ image for mainstream success.
