Development of “Blade and Sorcery” began in 2016, with the working title “Sorcering”. Early versions of the game were originally conceived as a multiplayer project in the Unity game engine, focusing on magic-based combat and involving teleportation mechanics. The game’s creator, KospY, has previous experience with modding games such as Kerbal Space Program and Fallout 3, which helped him master Unity and programming.
KospY’s interest in emerging VR technology and the innovative possibilities it offers inspired him to develop games specifically for VR. With a vision to create experimental and innovative experiences, Blade and Sorcery was designed as a physics simulation sandbox, aiming to be the first of its kind in VR. The emphasis on realistic physical interactions became fundamental to game development.
The decision to incorporate melee combat into Blade & Sorcery was made late in the development process. With physics simulation proving engaging and immersive, the concept of melee combat came naturally. Unique physics-driven mechanics provide a solid foundation for developing innovative and satisfying melee combat in VR.
Blade and Sorcery is a groundbreaking VR game that combines the freedom of a sandbox experience with realistic physical interactions and engaging melee combat. Sword and sorcery gameplay
Sorcering’s original multiplayer concept was ultimately abandoned due to technical challenges and a limited VR user base. It’s obvious that the high latency caused by physical interactions makes fighting against human enemies less satisfying. Additionally, the VR user community is small, making it difficult to justify developing a game focused solely on multiplayer. This resulted in a change in direction for the project, which was subsequently renamed Blade & Sorcery.
After spending two years creating the prototype, KospY decided to quit his job and devote himself full-time to Blade & Sorcery. This allowed him to rewrite the game’s code from scratch, optimizing it for better performance and ease of use.
The new vision for the game centers around a single-player experience with a heavy emphasis on melee combat and magic, all built on a physics simulation sandbox developed by KospY. Despite the considerable effort it took to rewrite the code, KospY says he has no regrets, as Blade and Sorcery now serve as a solid foundation for future development.
As the sole developer, KospY faced its own set of challenges. One of the biggest obstacles is the inability to multitask. Instead, he must focus on one function at a time. In terms of visual design, KospY drew inspiration from games such as The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Dark Messiah.
Since he was not an artist himself, he initially used pre-made assets that were best suited for the game. However, as the WarpFrog team grew, these store-bought assets were gradually replaced with custom-made assets, resulting in significant graphical improvements, especially noticeable in the U8 update.
