Alone in the Dark

Alone in the Dark is an old video game from 1992. It was made by Frédérick Raynal and published by Infogrames for computers such as MS-DOS. The game is about trying to escape from a spooky mansion in 1920s Louisiana. To progress, players need to solve puzzles and deal with ghosts and monsters. They can collect weapons, manage items by weight, and explore the map.

Renard created this game because he loves 3D animation and horror movies. The story is inspired by HP Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos and directors such as Dario Argento and George Romero. The game has received attention for its spooky atmosphere, beautiful music, and clever use of technology. It has influenced other games such as Resident Evil. Alone in the Dark has won awards and is often listed as one of the best games of all time. A new version will be released in March 2024.

Playing Alone in the Dark

In Alone in the Dark, players can choose between protagonist Edward Carnby or Emily Hartwood and find themselves trapped in the spooky Deserteau mansion. The journey begins in the attic, with the task of unraveling the mansion’s secrets while fighting supernatural enemies. Combat options include using fists, feet, and a variety of weapons found. Some opponents require puzzle-solving skills, while others are best avoided altogether.

Exploration and puzzle solving are at the core of the game, encouraging players to search the mansion for clues about its ominous past. The ability to interact with the environment, such as opening and closing doors, manipulating objects, and using key items, adds depth to the experience. The inventory system is determined by weight rather than the number of items, requiring strategic management, and players must discard items to make room.

The level design of Alone in the Dark offers a partially non-linear experience. Initially the player can only explore the attic and third floor, then progress in a linear order until the third floor puzzle is solved to gain access to the first and second floors. This gives the player the freedom to explore the rooms in any order, with the option to revisit the attic and third floor.

Progressing through specific puzzles unlocks the caverns beneath the mansion, introducing a completely linear progression and unique challenges to overcome. The game’s combination of combat, exploration, and puzzle solving gives it lasting appeal.

Alone in the Dark

In 1924, Jeremy Hartwood, the owner of a spooky mansion called Derceto in Louisiana, committed suicide. People have come to believe that the mansion is haunted. You can play as Edward Carnby, a detective looking for a piano, or Emily Hartwood, Jeremy’s niece who believes that the piano contains secret notes about his death. When the game starts, your character will travel to the mansion, and once inside, strange things will happen, such as doors slamming and monster attacks.

As you explore the mansion, you discover that a mysterious pirate named Ezechiel Pregzt built Derceto. He performed dark rituals in the caves beneath the house to gain wealth and extend his life. The mansion burned down during the Civil War, but Pregzt’s spirit still lives on in a tree beneath the house. Jeremy committed suicide to stop Pregzt from using his body, and now Pregzt is hunting you. If you fail in the game, Pregzt will take over your body, causing supernatural terrors.

In an alternate ending, you find a way into the cave, throw a lit lantern into Pregzt’s tree, and escape when the cave collapses. This destroys Pregzt, clearing the house of monsters and allowing you to leave safely. However, the game ends in an unexpected way–when you return to the car, you discover that the driver is a zombie who will take you back to civilization.

The story is inspired by the works of HP Lovecraft, including books such as The Necronomicon and The Mystery of the Worm, as well as creatures from Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos. The character Edward Carnby’s last name refers to a character from another Lovecraft-inspired story, and the various supernatural enemies in the game are also directly from Lovecraft’s stories.
