Here’s a guide on how to recruit all characters in the Unicorn Overlord demo:
1. Automatic device:
- At the start of the game, you will automatically recruit Alain, Chloe, Hodrick, Josef, and Lex.
- You’ll also get Clive, Travis, and Obin during the main story mission “A Call to Action.”
- At the beginning, you’ll pick up Veronica.
- During the main quest “The Kidnapped Priestess”, around level 8, you will recruit Fran, Kitra, and Miriam. After completing this quest, the demo ends.
2. Branch Mission Units:
- Archer Rolf: Go to an island peninsula southwest of Fort Solligey and speak with Rolf to complete the side quest “Lone Resistance”.
- Gladiator Bruno: In the southern part of Coquilachi town, accept the side quest “As a Trident Trooper”. Bruno will be automatically recruited after completing it.
- Feather Sword Oaklis: Find Oaklis in the story and exchange items for Holy Shards. If you give her 30 Holy Shards, she will join your team.
- Priest Sharon: Complete the side quest “Winged Knights” on the east side of Toulouse Harbor to recruit Sharon permanently.
- Yana the Witch: Head to the swamp area south of the Longmot Church and complete the side quest “The Ruined Swamp” to have Yana join your party.
- Warrior Morton: During the “Battle of Barbatimo” quest in the Walled City of Barbatimo, choose to spare Morton’s life in order to recruit him.
- Mercenary Berenice: Near Fort Colmar, recruit her after defeating Berenice in the side quest “Trial of a Mercenary”.
- Knight Adel: Automatically recruited when starting the side quest “Province of Famine” near Gromundburg and Falken Town.
- Griffin Rider Fran: Recruitable during the same quest as Adel until the quest is completed. She will then leave, but return during the “Priestess Kidnapped” event around level 8.
- Shaman Selvi: Help Selvi with the ghost problem southeast of Fort Lantriar and recruit her by starting the side quest “Mark of the Ancients”.
- Warrior Mir: During “Uprooting the Rock Rats”, Mir is temporarily recruited.
- Warrior Nina: Also in “Uprooting the Rock Rats”, Nina becomes a permanent member of your party.

Unicorn Overlord Development
The development of Unicorn Overlord began in 2014 when Takafumi Noma, a member of the Vanillaware team, came up with the concept. This was about a decade before the game hit store shelves. Vanillaware big boss George Kamitani approached Noma in 2013 after they finished Dragon’s Crown. He asked Noma to make a new fantasy game, and Noma jumped at the opportunity.

With Kamiya’s support, Noma served as director, character designer, and lead programmer for Unicorn Overlord. Another person named Wataru Nakanishi helped design the game, while Atlus’ Akiyasu Yamamoto served as producer.
The development of Unicorn Overlord was moving pretty slowly because Vanillaware was busy with other projects at the time. They were working on porting old games to new consoles, and they were also working on a game called 13 Sentinels: The Ring of Defense. Noma even got involved in the programming of 13 Sentinels.
Noma and Nakanishi worked closely together to determine the gameplay. They wanted Unicorn Overlord to be different from Dragon’s Crown, which was more like an arcade game. Instead, they aimed to create a game similar to classic 90s tactical role-playing games, providing players with fast-paced action and freedom.
They wanted Unicorn Overlord to be the “rebirth” of tactical RPGs, blending old-school charm with modern accessibility. Noma, whose primary job is as a programmer, was responsible for designing the characters and giving them their own art style. The game’s art style was decided early on, drawing inspiration from classic games while keeping it fresh. And the music, led by Mitsuhiro Kaneda and his Basiscape team, fits the game’s atmosphere perfectly.
