Instagram overview
Instagram, part of Meta Platforms, is a popular social networking service for sharing photos and videos. It allows users to upload media, apply filters, and organize content using hashtags and location tags. Posts can be shared publicly or with approved followers. Users can explore content (such as photos) by tags and location, follow other users, and create personalized feeds.
Initially, Instagram limited content to a square aspect ratio of 640 pixels to match the iPhone’s display width. However, this restriction was later relaxed in 2015, allowing for higher resolution photos of up to 1080 pixels. The platform introduced messaging features, the ability to include multiple images or videos in a single post, and a Snapchat-like Stories feature. Stories is wildly popular, with 500 million daily users as of January 2019.
Instagram was launched for iOS in October 2010 by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. It quickly gained traction, reaching 1 million registered users within two months, 10 million within a year, and finally surpassing 1 billion users in June 2018. In April 2012, Facebook Inc. acquired Instagram for approximately $1 billion. The Android version was released in April 2012, followed by limited desktop access in November 2012, the Fire OS app in June 2014, and the Windows 10 app in October 2016. By October 2015, more than 40 billion photos had been uploaded to the platform.
While Instagram has been praised for its success and influence, it has also faced criticism. Concerns include its impact on youth mental health, policy and interface changes, accusations of censorship and illegal or inappropriate content uploaded by users.
