There are three ship types: sailing, firepower, and freight, each with unique advantages. You can customize all 12 available ships to suit your play style.
Managing the condition of your ship and the morale of your crew is crucial, as unhappy crew members may mutiny. If your ship sinks, you will respawn at the nearest pirate lair but will only be able to recover part of your cargo, and you will need to recover the rest while facing potential player encounters.
The game features the use of wind direction to gain tactical advantage, a variety of ship types equipped with different weapons, and the ability to board enemy ships. Players can also hunt for treasure in the multiplayer mode “Trophy Hunt” and plunder fortresses and settlements.
As of 2017, Skull & Bones is described as a tactical action game set in an open world, played from a third-person perspective. The player controls a customizable pirate ship and can sail the Indian Ocean in a single-player campaign or team up with up to five players in player-versus-player games. Wind direction affects combat, and the player can collect different ships with a variety of weaponry.
Ships can be boarded and damaged, and health bars are displayed. The game features a multiplayer “treasure hunt” mode, where players can climb up to a lookout and use a telescope to observe ships. Looting forts and settlements is also an important aspect of the game.

The game will be released for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Amazon Luna, and Microsoft Windows on February 16, 2024. A Google Stadia version was originally planned, but it was canceled due to the closure of the service.
The game is about piracy and naval warfare, and is set in a fantasy world inspired by East Africa and Southeast Asia in the late 17th century, at the height of the Golden Age of Piracy.
Skull & Bones was originally scheduled for release in late 2018, but was delayed multiple times, first to 2019, then to after March 2020, and finally until at least the 2021-2022 fiscal year. In September 2020, Ubisoft announced a new vision for the game, and development was further delayed as other studios such as Ubisoft Berlin joined the game.
Although initially announced for release in November 2022, the game was delayed again to March 9, 2023, and later to the 2023–2024 fiscal year due to recent disappointing releases. A closed beta was launched in August 2023, with the final release date set for February 16, 2024.

Skull and Bones Game Development
Skull & Bones is Ubisoft Singapore’s first independent project and is inspired by the naval battles of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. Development began in 2013 as an expansion for Black Flag, which later became an MMO called Black Flag Infinite.
The game went through various revisions due to technical challenges, went over budget, and had its setting changed before settling on East Africa and Southeast Asia. The game faced delays and new development visions, and other studios such as Ubisoft Berlin joined the project.
The developers cited reasons for these difficulties including conflicting philosophies, management issues and a lack of consistent direction. The project reportedly cost more than $120 million. The game was first unveiled at Ubisoft’s E3 2017 press conference and announced to be coming to Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with enhanced features also coming to PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X. Ubisoft Singapore also launched a “Code Keepers” program to allow players to contribute to the live service aspects of the game.
