Tekken 8

Tekken 8 is the latest entry in the famous fighting game series developed by Bandai Namco Entertainment and debuted on January 26, 2024 on PlayStation 5, Windows and Xbox Series X/S platforms. “Tekken 8” is the eighth major work in the series. Its story mode is based on “Dark Awakening”, and the story is set six months after the events of the previous game.

The storyline revolves around the climactic confrontation between father and son Mishima Kazuya and Kazama Jin, as Jin attempts to end the turmoil within the family by confronting his father. Featuring 32 characters, Tekken 8 combines beloved returning characters with exciting new characters, each playing an important role in the game’s overarching plot.

The game’s development was first hinted at in August 2022 before being officially announced at Sony’s State of Play event next month. Powered by Unreal Engine 5, Tekken 8 emphasizes a more aggressive tone while refining and enhancing the combat mechanics introduced in previous versions.

New gameplay elements introduced include the Heat system and Twister hits, complemented by updated character models and voice acting. The online mode offers a range of features, including arcade missions featuring tournaments, arcade-style gameplay options, customizable avatars and a unique in-game currency system. Ahead of release, stability testing of Tekken 8 has begun in July and October 2023, with a demo available on PlayStation and Xbox Series platforms in December.

Tekken 8 gameplay

As producer Katsuhiro Harada emphasized, “Tekken 8” retains the classic fighting game style of the previous game while focusing on providing a more aggressive gaming experience. The game introduces an innovative “Heat” system that rewards proactive offensive strategies rather than defensive strategies.

While in the “hot” state, the character not only deals fragmentation damage and unlocks additional moves, but also sees changes to move attributes, such as enhanced defense breakthroughs. Fighters in this state can dash to cancel their actions, and can use certain actions to manipulate the heat timer. Defending against a heavy attack or hot status character will cause the chip to be damaged, while attacking the opponent will restore the player’s health.

The Fury system returns with a revamp, notably the introduction of Heat Crush, a super move tied to the Heat system. In addition, the “screw” mechanism was replaced by a “tornado” extender. Some stages present hazards, such as reinforced walls and floors that require multiple hits to break, and explosive elements that launch opponents upwards.

Tekken 8 enhances the cinematic combat experience with dynamic stage destruction and character-specific reactions. All character models and voice acting are brand new, providing a fresh visual and auditory experience. Online modes include the “Arcade Quest” battle lobby, regular online battles, and tournaments. Players can use the in-game currency “Fight Money” to personalize their avatars.

Powered by Unreal Engine 5, Tekken 8 is a groundbreaking entry in the fighting game genre, leveraging cutting-edge technology to deliver stunning visuals and an immersive gameplay experience.

Tekken 8 plot

Six months after Mishima’s disappearance, Jin Kazama, accompanied by allies Lars Alexanderson and Li Chaolan, ventured to New York to confront Mishima. The conflict erupted into a catastrophic battle that resulted in massive casualties.

Kazuya reveals his demonic form and announces a new King of Iron Fist tournament in which representatives from various countries must participate in the battle. The winner’s country will be spared, and the loser’s country will face destruction.

While recovering from his injuries, Jin found that he could not activate his magic power at will. While participating in a tournament qualifier in Japan, he met Reina, a student at Mishima Institute of Technology who bore a striking resemblance to his grandfather, Heihachi. What Jin doesn’t know is that Reina is actually a member of Mishima’s team, and his purpose is to uncover the secret behind the activation of demonic power.

Elsewhere in Italy, the likes of Claudio Serafino, Zafina and Ling Xiaoyu observed the tournament progress. Zafina warns of the urgent need to stop Kazuya’s plan and sets out to find Jin. At the same time, Nicholas Clayson revealed important information about the demon gene and Azazel to Yggdrasil.

As the main game begins, Kazuya absorbs Azazel’s power and transforms into a true demon. Jin, Leroy Smith and others united to resist Kazuya’s tyranny. Claudio makes a bold move and uses his powers to hurt Kazuya, seemingly sacrificing himself in the process.

Determined to regain control of his demonic powers, Jin embarks on a journey to Kazama Sanctuary. Determined to eliminate the rebels, Kazuo also faces strong opposition from Yggdrasil, the United Nations Independent Forces, and former tournament participants.

In a subconscious confrontation, King battles his demonic self, ultimately embracing and mastering his own power. Jin saves Lars from Kazuya’s attack and engages in a climactic showdown with Kazuya that ultimately cleanses them of their demonic genes.

After awakening into his angel form, Jin defeated Kazuya and left with Xiaoyu. In the post-credits scene, Reina was thought dead after Kazuya’s attack, but she survived and revealed her dormant demonic genes and vowed to avenge her father, Heihachi.
