Unicorn Overlord Development

Unicorn Overlord was conceived by Vanillaware’s Takafumi Noma in 2014, 10 years before the game was released. Encouraged by company founder George Kamitani, Noma served as director, character designer, and lead programmer, while Wataru Nakanishi served as designer and Atlus’ Akiyasu Yamamoto served as producer. The game’s music was created by Mitsuhiro Kaneda’s team at Basiscape, adding to the game’s immersive experience.

Noma and Nakanishi developed the game concept, drawing inspiration from classic tactical RPGs from the 1990s, but aiming to deliver a unique experience. Unicorn Overlord focuses on speed, top-down perspective, player freedom, and real-time movement and combat. Primarily a programmer, Noma showed off his illustration skills, leading the character design, which was inspired by 14th century Europe with Japanese fantasy elements. The 2D art design is in stark contrast to the 3D graphics popular in the industry.

Unicorn Overlord was first shown in a short clip in the prologue demo of 13 Sentinels: Aegis Edge, and was later officially announced at the Nintendo Direct, with a special edition containing an art book and soundtrack. Kamiya emphasized that this is Vanillaware’s most important project and will be nearing completion in January 2023. Atlus will publish the game in Japan, Sega will publish the game worldwide, and will release a complete soundtrack album at the same time as the game.
