Thinking back on my personal experience, I remember seeing House of 1000 Corpses when it premiered, even though it was 80 miles from where I lived to the nearest screening room. The passage of twenty years since then is staggering. I’ve revisited House of 1000 Corpses many times over the years, although I found myself more fascinated by the follow-up The Devil’s Rejects .

House of 1000 Corpses plot
On October 30, 1977, incompetent criminal killers Carl and Richard Wick carried out a botched armed robbery at a gas station, complete with a gruesome display. Their attempt was thwarted by Captain Spaulding, the owner of the establishment, and his assistant Ravelli, resulting in the group of would-be bandits being killed. That night, a quartet of Jerry Goldsmith, Bill Hadley, Mary Knowles, and Dennis Willis set out on a road trip to document strange roadside attractions for a book.
They meet Spaulding, who runs the Museum of Monsters and Madmen, who introduces them to the local myth of Dr. Satan. They set out to find the tree where Dr. Satan was said to have been hanged, and meet a carefree hitchhiker named Baby, who claims she lives nearby. A shadow suddenly appears and shoots their tires, causing Baby to go to her house to get help while the others stay behind.
The baby’s half-brother, Rufus, quickly arrived to help them and transported them to the family home. There, they are introduced to the baby’s relatives: her adopted brother Otis Driftwood, her giant, deformed half-brother Tiny, the mysterious Firefly mother, and the elderly Grandpa Hugo.
Over a dinner together, Mother Firefly recounts the family’s painful history, including her ex-husband Earl’s attempt to burn down Tiny and their home after a breakdown. After dinner, the family puts on a Halloween show, but tensions escalate when Baby’s overtures to Bill anger Mary. Rufus informs them that the vehicle has been repaired, prompting them to leave.
As the group leaves, Otis and Tiny disguise themselves as Scarecrows, ambush them in the driveway, and capture them. Over the next few days, Otis murders Bill and dismembers his body, Dennis is disguised as a doll and tied to a bed and endures torture, and Jerry dies after failing to recognize Babe’s favorite actor. Suffering a terrible fate.

Concerned for Denise’s health, her father, Don, sought help from law enforcement, and officers George Wydell and Steve Nish discovered the gruesome scene at the Firefly residence. Mother Firefly eliminates Weddell, and Otis dispatches Don and Steve after discovering more victims in the barn.
The three surviving teenagers suffered further torture, and Mary met a horrific end at the hands of Babe. Otis burns the body and Jerry and Denise are placed in coffins and lowered into an abandoned well.
Deep in the depths, the two encounter strange experiments related to Dr. Satan. Jerry meets a horrific death and Denise journeys through a nightmarish underground complex. She faces Dr. Satan and his patients, as well as Mother Firefly’s estranged spouse, the gigantic Earl. Earl dies and Denise escapes the collapsing tunnel.
Denise is rescued by Captain Spaulding, unconscious. After waking up, she found herself being held captive, surrounded by Dr. Satan, the Count, and a nightmarish environment. The movie ends with Denise screaming in terror and “The end?” Appears before the credits roll.
