Only God Forgives is the follow-up effort by Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn that failed to inspire a similar cult following or critical acclaim. Only God Forgives is full of gruesome violence and has beautiful cinematography and lighting, which might be enough to entertain some viewers. The film overall suffers from a lack of a compelling pace or narrative and ends up lagging throughout, which makes it Gosling’s worst movie despite the stylistic powerhouse of Refn in the director’s chair.

Murder By Numbers pairs Sandra Bullock with Ryan Gosling in a mostly unremarkable crime and mystery story. Gosling stars as a high school student turned murderer who is investigated by Bullock’s character, a homicide detective. While the premise contains some intriguing elements and great actors, Murder By Numbers reverts to conventional plot twists and uninspired narrative devices toward the end of the film, making it one of Gosling’s least impressive attachments in his otherwise outstanding career.

Ryan Gosling and Kirsten Dunst in All Good Things

All Good Things paired Ryan Gosling and Kirsten Dunst as romantic interests in this crime mystery drama that is loosely inspired by events in the life of Robert Durst. Gosling plays David Marks, a man who is suspected of killing his wife (Dunst) after her disappearance in 1982. Gosling and Dunst shine in this chilling thriller that successfully leaves a lasting impression on its audience, the film’s frequent flaws such as forced dramatic moments and occasional awkward scene transitions make it one of Gosling’s least impressive movies.

Song to Song is a meditative portrait of two intersecting love triangles backdropped by the bustling music scene in Austin, Texas. The film’s director, Terrence Malick, is known for his atypical filmmaking style that is meant to evoke emotional and dreamlike states more than it intends to present a clear narrative, which runs the risk of easily alienating audiences. Song to Song is an interesting journey that might have fared better with critics if it weren’t so thematically and aesthetically similar to Malick’s other works such as The Tree of Life.

Stay has become a cult classic since its premiere in 2005. The mystery thriller stars Ryan Gosling as a paranoid psychiatric patient who has a hard time grasping his reality. The film also has Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts and in many ways acts as a time capsule to the styles and sensibilities of a post-Matrix Hollywood in the mid-2000s. The psychological aspects of Stay have made it celebrated by fans of the thriller genre, but the film was not able to win over critics at the time of its release.

Gangster Squad should have been a great movie considering its cast of Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, and Sean Penn, but ultimately fell flat because of its cartoonish portrayal of a film noir set in Los Angeles in the 1940s. The film has stylistic and action elements that make it watchable but end up only masquerading the half-baked story underneath it. Gangster Squad feels superficial even as it attempts to capture a significant piece of history, which is why it’s a fun but not memorable Ryan Gosling movie.

The Slaughter Rule is one of Ryan Gosling’s earliest performances that proved he could be a leading man in Hollywood. Gosling plays a high-school quarterback who struggles with his own concepts of masculinity and sexuality, which becomes a fascinating theme of the movie. Gosling’s performance is one of his best before he became an international superstar, making The Slaughter Rule an excellent watch in combination with its progressive motifs.

The Gray Man places Ryan Gosling in the role of lead action hero under the direction of the Russo brothers. The film should be one of Gosling’s best, especially considering his pairing with Chris Evans, but it struggles to maintain its quality all the way through. Expectations were very high for the Netflix film especially considering its $200 million budget and major ensemble cast. Ultimately, The Gray Man wasn’t bad, but it definitely didn’t live up to its potential.

The movie follows Gosling’s character as a young man stuck in the juvenile detention system for committing a horrific murder. The people around him try to figure out why he did what he did and eventually reveal the young man’s tragic outlook on the world. The film is highly original and thought-provoking and places Gosling in a rare villainous role.

The Notebook is a classic 2000s love story that just about everyone has heard of before. For many viewers, The Notebook might have been the first time they became aware of Ryan Gosling as an actor and likely laid the foundation for him to become an A-list Hollywood presence. The film itself, while beloved by fans, is often criticized as being somewhat cliche, especially when compared to the original book it was based on. The Notebook still remains a classic that Gosling can attribute much of his popularity to.

Remember the Titans is often considered one of the most inspirational sports movies ever made. Ryan Gosling appears in the movie as a guitar-playing quarterback, a supporting character who does not have many speaking lines. The film was one of Gosling’s earliest professional acting credits and put him in the spotlight to star in several other movies in the early 2000s and beyond. Remember the Titans is similar to The Notebook in that they are both beloved by fans despite not impressing most critics.

Fracture paired Ryan Gosling with masterful actor Anthony Hopkins in this courtroom thriller. The film is sharply made, well acted, and started to cement Gosling’s ability as a co-star with one of Hollywood’s most notable actors. The movie is deeply compelling despite having some difficulty keeping a steady pace at times. The onscreen chemistry between Gosling and Hopkins is the main reason why Fracture should be celebrated and rewatched to this day.

The Ides of March is a strong political thriller that pairs Ryan Gosling and George Clooney together in an interesting and realistic look at the corrupt world of politics. Gosling delivers a great performance as a media consultant and campaign director for a new presidential candidate (Clooney). The film dives deeply into the dark tactics of campaigning and presents a bleak portrait of reality that quickly wipes every ounce of idealism out of Gosling’s character’s eyes, leaving a sharp yet familiar impression on the audience.

Lars and the Real Girl was a daring yet rewarding performance for Ryan Gosling who was unafraid to step out of the box in this eccentric movie. Gosling plays a delusional man who is in love with a life-size doll that he bought on the Internet. Gosling diverted from his typical romantic interest or a dramatic lead in this role, which was one of his earliest portrayals of the softer and stranger side of his acting career. Gosling’s quirkiness in Lars and the Real Girl laid some of the foundations for other comedic and off-center works later in his career.

2010’s Blue Valentine is a gut-wrenching heartbreaker of a movie in which Ryan Gosling stars alongside Michelle Williams. Directed by Derek Cianfrance, Blue Valentine delivers such raw performances by Gosling and Williams that is so genuine it feels incredibly rare and brutally realistic. Half Nelson is one of Ryan Gosling’s most overlooked movies and yet one of his best. Gosling stars alongside Anthony Mackie as an inner-city junior high school teacher with a serious drug problem who gets exposed by one of his students. Gosling’s intimate portrayal of his character in Half Nelson is the main reason why the film is such a winner and shows how transformative Gosling can be in a leading role, especially one that possesses an introspective lens and an inspirational message.
