Every MCU Captain America Costume In 14 Years Ranked Worst To Best

Captain America has had a lengthy history in the Marvel Cinematic Universe by now, with a wide range of suits ranging from great to underwhelming. Throughout Captain America’s timeline throughout the MCU, the character has gone from a World War II secret weapon who survived into the modern day to a decorated soldier carrying the burden of impossible expectations. Captain America has had some of the most wardrobe changes of any hero, reflecting his long and arduous journey.

Going by the comics, Captain America doesn’t have the easiest costume to make look good in a live-action setting, from the outdated flared boots to the goofy-looking wings sticking out of his head. Yet somehow, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has done a pretty great job adapting the character for screen, transforming the costume into something that works in-motion when worn by an actual actor. With the upcoming Captain America: Brave New World, Cap will have gotten yet another theatrical look courtesey of the MCU.

Captain America’s First Modern Suit

The Avengers

Jeremy Renner, Chris Evans, and Scarlett Johansson as Hawkeye, Captain America, and Black Widow walk down a Helicarier hallway in The Avengers (2012)

Bringing Captain America into the modern day, the Marvel Cinematic Universe was tasked with finding a suitable look for him without the benefit of World War II imagery for the first time in The Avengers. Being the franchise’s first attempt at a modern version of the iconic pulpy costume, not all the kinks had yet been ironed out. As a result, the film features easily the worst Captain America suit in the entire MCU.

Captain America’s suit in The Avengers looks cheap and costumey, with a massive velcro seam going down the center of the chest that seems ready to fall apart at any given moment. The dimensions of Captain America’s mask/helmet had yet to be fully figured out here, and the awkward appearance makes Chris Evans look like a turtle. It’s truly no wonder that this suit was quickly abandoned as the franchise continued to develop.

The Propaganda Suit

Captain America: The First Avenger

Captain America stageplay propaganda Captain America_ The First Avenger

For what it’s worth, the propaganda suit Steve Rogers wears in Captain America: The First Avenger looks bad on purpose, taking a chance to display just how silly a straightforward adaptation of his classic comic look would appear on the big screen. Cap wears this suit when touring with the U.S. army as a performer, encouraging citizens to help support the armed forces by acting out small plays. Far from a practical look, this outfit is played for laughs more than anything else, though Cap does wear a portion of it underneath his uniform on his first combat mission.

The propaganda suit earns the distinction of being the only Captain America suit to actually make the winged ears a three-dimensional fixture, rather than an icon simply emblazoned on either side of his helmet. The resulting goofy silhouette is a good thesis statement as to why keeping such an idea for his actual combat suit was a bad one, not to mention the velvety material and plain color scheme. Still, at least this suit gets some bonus points for including Captain America’s original kite shield.

Sam Wilson’s First Suit

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier

Sam Wilson's Captain America with dead Karli Morgenthau in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier sees both title characters grappling over the legacy of Captain America, with Sam Wilson initially refusing to accept the honor granted to him at first. However, by the end of the series, Sam officially becomes the next Captain America, donning a brand-new supersuit distinct from his identity as The Falcon in order to cement the passing of the torch. Sadly, this initial suit leaves a lot to be desired, and only shows up for a brief moment.

Sam’s first Captain America suit isn’t much of a looker, with a garishly bright white color scheme and an awkward-looking half mask that finds a strange middle ground between Captain America’s helmet and The Falcon’s visor. The new red, white, and blue Vibranium wings are a nice touch, but the outfit’s many contrasting lines and overlapping layers read as a very busy concept that’s hard to focus on. While certainly not a terrible look, there was definitely room to improve for Sam Wilson’s Captain America.

The New Avengers Suit

Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War

Chris Evans as Captain America running in the forest in Avengers Age of Ultron

One of the only Captain America suits to actually see multiple film appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the second iteration of Captain America’s Avengers suit is a marked improvement on the first. Compared to the suit from The Avengers, this new and enhanced look features elements from Captain America’s World War II suit, paying homage to his origins in the conflict. These details include the harness and pouches of his previous look, as well as a chin-strap that makes the helmet feel a little more natural.

This bulkier, almost motorcycle-jacket type of suit becomes the standard template for all of Captain America’s movie appearances going forward. Avengers: Age of Ultron admittedly does add in busy elements like the disrupted lines of the red and white ab stripes, shoulder pads, and a less-plastic-looking helmet. Though Captain America: Civil War changes the costume a little bit by changing the coloring on Steve’s arms, this delicate balance of practicality and symbolism lends itself well to Captain America.

The Nomad Suit

Avengers: Infinity War

Chris Evans as Steve Rogers' Captain America in Avengers Infinity War

After the events of Captain America: Civil War, Steve Rogers is forced to go on the run from S.H.I.E.L.D. and the United States government, refusing to sign the Sokovia accords or abandon The Winter Soldier. Thus, Rogers is forced to abandon the mantle of Captain America, no longer wearing the Stars and Stripes of the country after openly defying it. This mimics a Marvel comic storyline where Steve Rogers temporarily becomes the hero Nomad, a name which emphasizes his refusal to bow to the whims of any singular government.

To reference this arc, Avengers: Infinity War puts Steve Rogers in an all-black suit with the star defiantly removed, losing the helmet as well to show off his new longer hair and beard. While technically just an alteration of the Captain America: Civil War suit, this worn-down and battle-damaged costume tells the story of Steve Rogers’ time spent on the lam. The twin Vibranium shields he gets from Black Panther later on are a great addition that makes the simple, but effective Nomad suit work.

The Stealth Suit

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Chris Evans As Steve Rogers And Samuel L Jackson As Nick Fury In Elevator Overlooking Project Oversight In Captain America The Winter Soldier

As much of an espionage spy thriller as a traditional superhero movie, Captain America: The Winter Soldier sees Steve Rogers on the run from S.H.I.E.L.D. for the first time. Not only that, but early on in the film, he’s seen taking on more covert operations that require a certain degree of stealth. Thusly, Steve Rogers enjoys a new suit that’s another stark upgrade from his costume in The Avengers, one of the most practical iterations of his outfit yet.

The aptly-named stealth suit is a version of Rogers’ later suits that comes in an all-black and very dark navy blue color scheme. Losing the bright white and red stripes that could easily give him away in a dangerous strike mission, this suit doesn’t completely eschew all attempts at superhero symbolism, still granting Steve his classic chest star and winged stripes in a striking silver hue. Stealthy and sleek at a distance while intimidating up-close, this version of Steve’s base suit is good enough to come back for the opening scene of Avengers: Endgame.

Sam Wilson’s Second Captain America Suit

Though the trailers briefly show him wearing the suit from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, it seems as though Sam Wilson’s Captain America will be getting a brand-new suit in Captain America: Brave New World. Once again working in Wilson’s talent for piloting the experimental flight suit that got his superhero career started as the Falcon, this new suit offers a color scheme more similar to the traditional colors worn by Steve Rogers. More notably, the suit also represents a first for Captain America by including a full-face flight helmet.

This suit is a marked upgrade from Wilson’s first iteration, with a dark blue base that compliments the red and silver accents. The chevrons and extended boots and gauntlets make Sam look prepared and capable, and the full-face helmet makes sense for soaring high above the clouds. The only thing holding this suit back from being one of the greatest is the lazy nanotech activation of the helmet, which makes the whole thing feel just a little bit weightless and computer generated.

2

The World War II Combat Suit

Captain America: The First Avenger

Captain America with the Howling Commandos in Captain America The First Avenger

While Steve Rogers’ propaganda suit is more or less ripped straight out of the comics, his actual combat suit worn in most of the missions in Captain America: The First Avenger represents the MCU’s first take on something original. This costume first appears when Steve Rogers is officially sanctioned to go on combat missions. It’s often seen worn by Captain America fighting alongside the Howling Commandos, his own dedicated unit of specialized soldiers. The emotions inspired by this suit would be chased by every subsequent MCU movie.

This costume is a perfect depiction of what a practical Captain America suit built for warfare in the 1940s would realistically look like. The leather straps, buckles, and ammunition pouches look right at home in the setting, and the costume was one of the first to incorporate more elements that make Steve Rogers actually feel like a soldier, from his parachute harness to his helmet chin strap. It’s astonishing that Captain America downgraded so hard from this suit in The Avengers.

Steve Rogers’ Final Suit

Avengers: Endgame

Captain America with Mjolnir in Avengers Endgame

The final movie appearance of Chris Evans as Steve Rogers, Avengers: Endgame at least lets the character go out with a bang via one more phenomenal costume. Cap dons this costume in the iconic final Battle of Earth, in which he and the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s heroes go up against Thanos’ army. It’s unclear as to when Steve found time to commission a new costume between being on the run from the U.S. government and going on the time heist, but the result is so cool that it doesn’t matter.

For the most part, the costume is a competent re-hash of the Avengers: Age of Ultron suit, with all the same strengths. This look upgrades things even further, however, with the inclusion of a larger chest star and patches of scaled textures that evoke Captain America’s very first appearances in the pages of Marvel comics. Being the suit Captain America wears when he wields Mjölnir, this final costume is simply too good to overlook as the single greatest in the hero’s wardrobe.
