With Disney’s Moana 2 arriving in theaters, it joins the rising list of animated sequels to critically acclaimed Disney movies. Since the 1990s, Disney has released several animated sequels to some of their most popular movies, which have reached varying degrees of success with critics and viewers. While there were some Disney sequels that received a theatrical release, between the 1990s and 2010s, the majority of animated sequels were released direct-to-DVD.

There are several Disney direct-to-DVD movies that serve as midquels or prequels to classic stories, including Beauty and the Beast: Belle’s Magical World and The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Beginning. While these midquel movies fill in the gaps in the originals’ stories, Disney also released many movies that continued on from where the original movie ended. But while Disney’s catalog of animated sequels allows iconic characters to experience a new adventure, not every sequel has been met with a warm reception from audiences.

Disney’s 1998 Mulan offered an inspiring coming-of-age story about a young woman taking her ailing father’s place in the army and rising to fight against the Hun invasion in China. Mulan was a great movie on its own, so it came as a surprise when Disney released a direct-to-video sequel in 2004. Mulan II depicts the titular character and her fiancé, Li Shang, on a new mission to bring three princesses to the kingdom of Qui Cong in preparation for their arranged marriage. Meanwhile, Mushu’s role as guardian spirit is threatened by Mulan and Shang’s relationship, and he plots to break them up.
The sequel completely contradicts Mulan’s original story of rising up against the odds, and sees her sacrificing her own happiness to enter an arranged marriage.
This is easily the worst Disney animated sequel ever made, as it completely contradicts Mulan’s original story of rising up against the odds, and sees her sacrificing her own happiness to enter an arranged marriage. Its story is nowhere near as thrilling as the original and includes a voice cast that delivers a lackluster performance. A sequel to an already iconic Disney movie like Mulan just wasn’t needed, so it’s no surprise that Mulan II has a score of 0% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame II
Director Bradley Raymond Release Date March 19, 2002 Runtime 68 Minutes
Released as part of the Disney Renaissance, The Hunchback of Notre Dame is often considered one of the best adaptations of Victor Hugo’s classic novel. The sequel returns to Quasimodo, who is now an accepted member of Parisian society, and is friends with Zephyr, the son of Esmaralda and Phoebus. Sarousch, the owner of a circus troupe, arrives in Paris to steal the bell of Notre Dame. He recruits his assistant Madallaine to get Quasimodo to fall in love with her and gain his trust.

The sequel tried to offer an idea of Quasimodo’s life after the events of the original movie, but the story is subpar and boring with stilted animation and a forgettable soundtrack. The main villain, Sarousch, is also considered uninteresting compared to the original’s Judge Claude Frollo, one of Disney’s unappreciated villains. While it’s nice to see Quasimodo finally find love, the sequel doesn’t have enough to make it a commendable continuation of the original story.

The Emporer’s New Groove is often considered one of Disney’s most underrated animated movies, thanks to its humourous story, talented voice cast and range of characters. One of The Emporer’s New Groove’s best characters was Kronk, the bumbling assistant of Yzma; voiced by Patrick Warburton, Kronk’s dimwitted mindset and attacks of conscience made him one of the best aspects of the movie. The success of The Emporer’s New Groove and Kronk’s popularity with viewers led to him receiving his own movie, Kronk’s New Groove, in 2005.
It tried to offer something different from the original, but showed that when Kronk was moved into the spotlight, his antics became tedious for viewers.
The sequel sees Patrick Warburton return as Kronk and follows him recounting how he lost everything to gain the approval of his father and eventually regaining everything back. It tried to offer something different from the original, but showed that when Kronk was moved into the spotlight, his antics became tedious for viewers. Kronk later returned in a sidekick role in the spinoff show, The Emporer’s New School, which was more successful.
