Peter Sohn began working on the project following the release of The Good Dinosaur in 2015. He pitched the concept to Pixar, exploring the connection between fire and water. The film was inspired by Sohn’s experience growing up as the son of immigrants in New York City in the 1970s. It celebrates the city’s cultural diversity. Romantic films such as Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner (1967), Moonlighting (1987) and Amélie (2001) also influenced the story.
To gather inspiration, the team watched city tours on YouTube and researched places like Venice and Amsterdam. Animation tools were used to create the visuals and unique look of each character, especially Ember and Wade. The film was seven years in the making, with work taking place both in studios and away from the filmmakers’ homes.
The original score for Elements was composed and conducted by Thomas Newman, his fourth collaboration with Pixar. The film premiered on May 27, 2023 as the closing film of the 76th Cannes Film Festival, and was released in the United States on June 16 in multiple formats, including RealD 3D, 4DX and Dolby Cinema. While the animation received positive reviews, the script was criticized for being bland.

What happens when an element ends?
As the heat intensifies within the enclosed space, Wade, the water elemental, is faced with a difficult choice. To ensure that the blue flame that symbolizes their love continues to burn, Wade makes a selfless decision. He sacrifices himself and undergoes the process of evaporation.
The act of evaporation means that Wade changes from a liquid to a gaseous state, rising into the air as invisible water vapor. This transformation is a natural phenomenon in which thermal energy causes water molecules to gain enough kinetic energy to escape their liquid form and rise into the atmosphere.
Wade’s decision to evaporate demonstrates his unwavering dedication to preserving the flame and staying connected. By turning into vapor, Wade merges with the surrounding air, essentially becoming part of the atmosphere. By doing this, he ensures that the blue flame remains continuous as the gaseous water continues to create the fire.
The detailed portrayal of Wade’s evaporation allows the audience to witness the profound impact of his decisions. It illustrates the film’s exploration of the complexities of love and the sacrifices it may need to make to preserve it. Wade’s transformation into vapor adds a layer of metaphorical depth, symbolizing the ethereal nature of their relationship and the invisible yet powerful force that binds them together.

Wade evaporates and returns
The death of a key character in “The Elements” has raised concerns about the film’s suitability for children. However, the film’s ending takes a different direction to ensure it doesn’t end on a somber note. Wade, who had previously evaporated, is resurrected by Amber’s touching realization.
She found that the remaining water after Wade evaporated still retained the ability to produce tears. The film emphasizes how easily water elements can cry, emphasizing their emotional nature. In a twist of fate, Amber’s condolences triggered tears of Wade’s remaining moisture.
When Amber understood the significance of this revelation, she began reenacting scenes Wade used in The Crying Game to try to get her to cry. This includes reminiscing about butterflies, an old man on his deathbed, and passionately expressing her love for Wade.
This exciting moment extends beyond Ember, as her parents join in and make their own heartfelt contributions. Amber’s mother affirmed their compatibility as a couple, rating them a perfect ten, while her father lifted Wade’s ban from the fireplace. Tears shed during this powerful display of emotion gathered in a bucket on the floor, providing enough water to bring Wade back to life.
The rewritten version emphasizes the transformative power of emotion and its profound impact on the story’s outcome. It shows how a sincere expression of love, combined with collective tears, brought Wade back to life.
This scene emphasizes the theme of emotional connection and the power found in shared experiences. Ultimately, the film’s ending ensures a more uplifting ending, allowing viewers, including children, to find comfort in the triumph of love and the resilience of the characters.

element plot
Bernie and Cinder Luman, both fire elementals, faced discrimination and struggled to find acceptance after immigrating to the Elemental City. Despite the challenges they faced, they built a convenience store called “The Fireplace” that became a gathering place for fire element customers. Bernie plans to pass the store on to their daughter Amber, but she must first learn to control her explosive temper.
When Bernie allows Amber to run the store on her own, she becomes overwhelmed by customers and loses control, accidentally breaking a water pipe, causing a flood. This leads to the arrival of Water Elemental Health Inspector Wade Ripple. Despite his reluctance, Wade was forced to report the violation to his air elemental employer, Gale Cumulus, who threatened to shut down the fireplace. Amber tried to catch up to Wade, but it was too late.
Wade was moved by Amber’s plight and took her to Cyclones Stadium to plead with Gayle for leniency. During their conversation, Wade mentions investigating recurring floods, and Gale offers them a chance to prove themselves by finding the source of the problem.
If they successfully close the loophole, the violation will be forgiven. While searching the canal, Wade suspects Amber’s temper has something to do with a hidden truth she’s not ready to accept, but she denies it. Eventually, they discovered a hole in the dam that was causing flooding and managed to seal it with sandbags. Meanwhile, Bernie is dealing with leaks throughout the fireplace.
As Wade and Amber spend more time together, their connection grows deeper and they learn more about each other’s backgrounds. Wade reveals that the sandbags won’t hold, prompting Amber to use her unique abilities to create a stronger seal for the dam. Meanwhile, Cinder becomes suspicious of Amber’s activities and decides to follow her.
Amber visits Wade’s family at their luxury apartment and impresses them with her glassmaking skills. She also had a heartfelt conversation with Wade, in which he admitted his feelings for her and made her cry. High winds recognized the glass seal of embers, saving the fireplace from closing. However, Amber realized she no longer wanted to take over the store.
Bernie announces his retirement and plans to hand over the fireplace to Ember. He shares stories from his past, revealing his struggles and biases. Wade takes Amber to Garden Central Station to fulfill her childhood wish to see the Viviste orchids. Unexpectedly, the space station was flooded, and the bubble created by Gale ensured Amber’s safety.
Wade guides Amber underwater through the space station. During their journey, they discover that they can touch each other without harm and share romantic dances. However, Amber, reminded of her responsibilities to the store and her family’s prejudice against the water element, ultimately decided to leave Wade, leaving Wade heartbroken.
As Amber prepares to take over the fireplace, Wade returns and declares his love for her, inadvertently revealing that she is responsible for the broken pipe. Amber rejects Wade’s advances, but Cinder senses his sincerity.
Disappointed, Bernie decides not to retire and denies Amber owns the store. Unfortunately, a new seal on the dam broke, causing the fire area to flood. Amber and Wade find themselves trapped in a room within a fireplace, where the heat causes Wade to evaporate.
After the water recedes, a devastated Amber admits to Bernie that she doesn’t want to run the store and declares her love to Wade. Amber discovers that Wade’s essence has seeped into the stone ceiling, and uses the crying game to coax him back to his old self. Amber returned Wade’s feelings and they shared a heartfelt kiss.
A few months later, Ember and Wade (now husband and wife) left Element City so Ember could pursue her passion for glassmaking far away. As Amber steps aboard, she bows to Bernie, a gesture he responds to with tears, symbolizing the repair of their relationship and mutual understanding.
