Mary Morrison, a successful thriller writer, is faced with a series of disturbing events that blur the lines between reality and fiction. Mary develops a close bond with Grace after she hires her as a nanny to care for her children. However, she begins to experience sexual fantasies involving Grace and begins to question her own sanity.
In a heated confrontation, Mary accuses Grace of having an affair with her husband, Tom, causing tension in the family. The next day, Mary discovers that the nanny agency has no record of a nanny named Grace, which casts doubt on Grace’s true identity. Tragedy strikes when Mary discovers her friend Elaine dead and she becomes the prime suspect in the murder investigation.
Police discovered evidence of a crime against her, including a video showing a person resembling Mary showing up at Elaine’s home in disguise. Determined to uncover the truth, Mary travels to Grace’s hometown to learn about her troubled past, especially the abuse she suffered as a child. She attempts to warn Tom of Grace’s dangerous nature, but arrives just in time to witness Grace’s alter ego “Margaret” attack him with a knife. Mary intervenes, incapacitating Grace and saving Tom.
One year later, Mary and her family are recovering from the traumatic event. Mary visited Elaine’s grave and left behind her completed manuscript in memory of her late friend. She also visited Grace in a mental hospital and recognized her struggle with dissociative identity disorder. The film ends with “Mary” leaving the hospital looking exactly like the mysterious figure seen in the police video of Elaine’s killer, her true identity left to be deciphered.
