Day Z
DayZ is a multiplayer survival video game produced by Bohemia Interactive. It started as a mod for Arma 2 and later became its standalone game. After five years of testing on Windows, it was officially launched in December 2018 and launched on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in 2019.
In the game, players find themselves in a fictional post-Soviet republic called Black Russia, where a mysterious plague has turned most of the population into violent “infected people.” Survivors search for food, water, weapons, and medicine while dealing with the infected and other players. The update also adds a fictional Eastern European country called Livonia. The game was developed in 2012 and sold over 3 million copies during its early access phase.

DayZ Gameplay
In DayZ, the main goal is to survive a zombie outbreak. Starting near the coast, players carry basic items and must explore 225 square kilometers of fictional Black Russia, searching for supplies from locations such as houses and barns. The basics of survival include finding food and water.
Players will also find clothing for customization and extra storage, as well as a variety of weapons for defense. Dynamic events such as military convoys and helicopter crashes add to the challenge. Player interaction is crucial, including voice and text chat, as well as gestures like waving or surrendering. The game introduces medical threats such as diseases and injuries that require treatment. DayZ includes features such as gardening, cooking, crafting, base building, and vehicle use for efficient travel.

After the success of the DayZ mod, Dean Hall announced in August 2012 that DayZ would be a standalone game. He is targeting a November 2012 release, focusing on key issues such as bug fixes and security. The development emphasizes realism by increasing the number of accessible buildings. Hall expressed a willingness to implement risky ideas to discover what players like. The game uses a client-server architecture to reduce hacking and exploits. This version was originally planned for release in 2012, but was delayed due to major improvements, and an alpha version was eventually released in June 2013.
Throughout the development process, Hall kept the community informed via blogs and videos. In 2014, Bohemia Interactive acquired Cauldron Studios, expanding the DayZ development team. The game was later confirmed to be coming to PS4 and Xbox One, with additional features announced, including Steam Workshop support. In 2022, the film rights to the DayZ feature film adaptation were sold.
